So this was bothering me because I felt we were all missing something and I finally found it. Parcells didn't choose to put in tupa, he chose to put in mirer The rules back then stated you can have an emergency QB not on the gameday roster that is eligible to play on gameday. Parcells wanted the extra roster spot so he made tupa the backup QB (who was the starting punter) and mirer was the emergency QB. The rules stated that if the emergency QB came into a game before the 4th quarter, then the QB1 and QB2 are no longer eligible to play. Meaning when viny went down, if he put in mirer, we wouldn't have had a punter available the rest of the game. So he was forced to go with tupa who threw 2 TDs. When the 4th rolled around and it would no longer make tupa ineligible, parcells willingly benched him for mirer.
Exactly right! And I remember at the time after seeing Mirer shit the bed, thinking that man WHY THE FUCK did we take Tupa out!!!
