Not just the gunslinger attitude, but the fact that he could compete in a shoot out...could you imagine Chad Pennington in a shootout?

What I mean by that is...could you see Chad throwing the ball 40+ times and win the game for us with his arm? I sure as hell can't...I see Cutler doing that...

We also have Dreesen. Who I am a big supporter of. He is big, has good hands, and can block. Personally I want to see what he does with this CS coaching him up.

I like Dreesen alot too actually. He was projected to be a 3rd rounder and we got him in the 6th...so there was alot of value there when we took him...hopefully he develops to be a decent TE.

Then with a 2 TE set, we will be lethal

Vernon Davis SHOULD be our main pick

I could not disagree more in this case. Unlike many drafts, this draft is incredibly deep at the top. It makes our #4 pick very valuable. We CAN likely trade down and pick up an extra second round pick. If we can get down around 9 or 10 we can get Davis and fix the OL with Mangold, Gilles or one of the top OT. There are two reasons Davis is a particularly good fit for the Jets

    1. The New England philosophy is to use players who can fit multiple roles. Davis would play TE, split end and wide receiver in the offensive scheme. Opponents would have to gameplan for Davis and would get the attention of the safety and a corner, freeing up the WRs and RBs.

    2. Schottenheimer is an expert at exploiting this type of TE. I live in San Diego and it is Gates who has made Brees a pro bowler and a contender.

Teams need a playmaker. Davis would provide that and because of the value of the 4 pick, we can likely get him and address the OL. In that scenario, they can take Jacobs or hopefully Croyle as a QB prospect as well.

He is the one player I hope the Jets get most. He will make the biggest impact.

Right now I have San Fran possibly taking him at 6 and Buffalo at 8...they need a weapon for JP...

I doubt Vernon lasts until 9, but its possible...

Either way I don't like the idea of taking a TE #1

Croyle is probably the only other QB I really like to be a possible franchise QB other than the top three QB's...

I like how you think man- Brees, who definitely does not have a cannon, was able to use Gates quite effectively. TE might be a hidden priority for this team given the Patriot's past draft history.

Guys like Davis and Gates are guys you just want to get the ball too quickly and let them do their 'thing' in the open field. Chad can do that quite effectively now. At worst, these guys will draw a safety in order to free up a WR or open up some space for our hopefully improved RB core. If Chad is gone, he'll still be a great weapon.

Thats a terrible arguement. Lets not look at some TE's who provide pretty much the only recieving threat on a team.

Gates, Gonzo, Heap when healthy. Name me one good reciever on either KC or SD? None- and they still have good passing games. Because their Tight ends dominate.

The Steelers Did use Miller- they have a good QB, Great D, Great Line and Great Run game. the seahawks did use Stevens- they have a good QB, good D, Great Run Game and Great line. The Colts have the best QB/RB/WR trio in the game-- all are top 3 at their position. Denver is a Running Team with good D. Jacksonville has a shitty offense and could use a TE-they win with D and the panthers have a great D, with a good QB, and great WR.

That is why those teams can win without huge TE production, and may not need Davis. The Jets could use him though, and I'll tell you why. He can block- he would be the fastest player on the offense(maybe second to coles) and he would give us a weapon to throw to without having to upgrade with an expensive WR.

Would you guys please give up this Davis talk, we've taken four TEs in the first round over the last 12 years (or traded our #1 pick for one) and it's been nothing short of disasters for us. Mitchell, Brady, Becht, Jolley...Enough already! Any Jet GM who wastes another first rounder on a TE should be fired immediately.

Can't see the Bills taking him. They did take Miami TE Kevin Everett in round 3 last year. He just didn't play due to injury.

I agree with you 100% here. A dangerous pass catching tight end can completely change the dynamic of an offense. I know a lot of people here don't like him, but the way the Giants offense changed after they drafted Shockey is an example of what a big time tight end can do to an offense.

whoever doesnt believe we should try to get vernon davis is a idiot.. he is a true gamer that can help change our offense.. look at the chargers.. they are an offensively EXPLOSIVE team because they have ladanian tomlinson and antonio gates.. their receivers suck, mccardell, parker, and caldwell.. their o-line is only average, no one is special.. their QB last year brees is decent but looks much better because of LT and Gates.. why not draft 2 game breakers this year to fit the same mold as the team that stopped the colts from reaching a perfect season?? williams is a shifty back with moves on top of moves like LT and davis is a freakish athlete that CANNOT be covered by anyone.. even pennington will look good by throwing it to williams and davis, much like brees does with LT and Gates.. in addition to starting to build our team offensively, our defense is already better than the chargers defense.. not to mention our coaching staff's philosophy will make sure our defense is one of the best in the leagues... we would have pennington who is like brees, williams who can become our homerun back, davis who will dominate like gates, our WRs which are better than SDs WRs, and build our o-line to be better than SD's with the 2nd and subsequent round picks.. not to mention free agency with ashworth, shaffer, bentley up for bidding.. what do u guys think.. i think we should develop this team into an explosive team offensively with a very solid defense.. this will at least put us in the right step for a dominating franchise...

If Tangini thinks that Davis is of the same talent level as the players you mentioned then i guess we won't take him. If he's the game changing TE that he seems to be I can see our FO taking him with whatever pick we get for Abraham if he's still there.

Personally I hope we can get him as many people have made some great posts regarding what an elite tight end can do for an offense. Vernon Davis would give our offense an identity. He would be the focal point of the other teams safety which we all know opens doors.

If I can have all my dreams satisfied I'd like to have Deangelo Williams as well. A nice explosive offensive core in the image of San Diego. Get a Whitehurst or a Croyle in the 3rd. OL with every other pick. Either way - I have great faith in our FO this year.

    GO Jets!

    Agree on both points.

    Dallas Clark is a stud.

If Leinhart falls to # 4 somehow it would be hard to pass him up but I am not impressed with Culter or Young.

#4 would be the highest pick ever for a TE....ever. was Vernon Davis the best TE ever in college history? I don't watch college football so someone will have to let me know. So he ran a 4.3. So did Ben Watson. I don't know why some people are so enamoured with speed, it's not like they're running it with pads in a game.
