its odd how nobody can agree on who's done well in the secondary despite the circumstances. Walls, utter crap or actually decent? Landry, useless or a big contributor? Its all quite confusing and probably based on subjective standards and hunches based on memorable moments here or there. the only thing can be agreed upon is that we have problems in the secondary at large, and JI could have done better in acquiring talent there. BTW whats the Safety market look like? from last I checked nobody stood out, makes me glad invested there when we did.
214? Holy shit, Tim Fugger! He actually ended up on our practice squad the season after he was drafted. Then he was cut and never heard from again. Definitely worth trading Lowery away.
Wow, after reading your post I remember him being in camp this year, so much for "never heard from again". I even made fun of him in one of the camp threads. Got cut before the season. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20..._tim_fugger_sign_cornerback_lequan_lewis.html Gotta wonder if Rex was trying to justify the Lowery trade by bringing this guy back twice.
I want to see what a decent secondary coach can get out of them. Landry, Jarrett, Williams and Allen might be salvaged. Pryor might be worth a punt too.
I don't much like Walls but if he was a nickel cornerback, he's okay. I like Marcus Williams at least for depth. Some free agents as far as I know- Lowery, D. Landry, Jarrett, Rodney McLeod, Marcus Gilchrist, Devin McCourty, Stevie Brown, Abdul-Quddus, Rahim Moore, K. Lewis and T. Gipson. Gipson will be a restricted free agent.
Nickel takes special footwork and ability to read inside routes. Just saying that you like a corner that plays on the outside who has middling ability to play that position to move inside and play the nickel doesn't mean anything. The nickel corner position isn't a place you just throw average to below average corners. I would hope we had learned that lesson with Drew Coleman.
That's what I'm saying. The best nickel corner I have ever seen for the Jets was Ray Mickens. He was totally useless on the outside, but he had great footwork inside and knew exactly when to jump those inside routes. Rex tried to turn Wilson into a nickel corner and it failed miserably. He's nothing but a below average outside corner. But Rex had the right idea. He just didn't know how to execute, and neither did his coaches.
Walls certainly played like shit yesterday. Anyone who thought he would be a decent starter was obviously wildly over optimistic, but going forward the more important part is he is not acceptable as a starter. I think the real debate is whether he deserves to be a backup. I think not.
The entire secondary needs to be put into Thunderdome along with about three FA acquisitions and two draft picks next year and allowed to do the Darwin thing to see who gets on the field. They are that bad.
