He wasn't a very good HC for your team. The issues you just listed would be a bigger concern if he had been the OC or QB coach. Being a bad HC didn't get much from his assistants. Not shocking.
The wild cat was used here and there before Sparano but he was the one that really brought that into the light. The Dolphins ran that very efficiently and even though the Wild Cat was a new system it was very innovative to bring it to the NFL in that capacity. Also not only can the wild cat be effective but it gives opposing teams an extra wrinkle to prepare for. I remember in the Colts playoff game last year the Colts said they used one full day of practice to prepare for the wild cat with Smith. Thats one full day they aren't preparing for the rest of our offense. I hope we bring in an option QB from the college ranks similar to Smith and get this back in the offense next season.
The bolded is exactly why this is a good hire. What you just said is the anti-Schotty. And what you just said is what needs to happen here.
The notion of the Peter Principle is that people promoted one or more level above the level that better matches their skills to the needs of the position will, of course, perform more poorly at the higher level. And that is a comfort regarding Sparano, who obviously is not coming to the Jets in the same role as the one he failed at in Miami. But.. do we know that a demotion one level puts him in the right match of skills and needs of the position? Not yet.
The Phins under Sparano actually used the legitimate Wildcat formation, not just the idea of plugging a non-QB into the shotgun and calling it the 'wildcat'. That was innovation.
Sure it was, but there are plenty of examples around the league of first-time HC's being excellent coordinators after losing their first HC job. We ought to hang our hat on that rather than his Dolphins head coaching record. We have a head coach. Being upset about this hire because things didn't go well for him as a head coach is silly.
That didnt come out right. What I mean to say was he didn't invent the wild cat. That has been around for awhile especially at the College level. So it was innovation to run it in the NFL but he didn't create the offense.
Dolphins fan here. Teaching and player development??? Dude, listen, I know you want to try to be optimistic here, but look at the way Tony 'developed' Chad Henne. The single biggest problem with Miami over his tenure has been the inability to develop young players, especially at the QB position. Tony would be fine as an OL coach maybe, or quality control coach or something, but I absolutely can not fathom why the Jets made this hire. And yes, Sparano had nothing to do with the Wildcat. Parcells wanted to bring that to the NFL when he was working at ESPN, and David Lee is the guy who implemented it in Miami, that's why the FIRST person hired by Parcells (before Sparano or anyone else) was Lee.
Shit, now I have to look out for Dolphag fans who will want to run me up about Sparano. Oh well. It helps to have thick skin in this fandom.
I don't understand why Dolphins fans are coming in here talking about a guy who was in a totally different position for their team. Sparano the HC and Sparano the OC are two totally different people. I would value a Cowboys fan's opinion a lot more.
You do realize we only made it b/c we have the world's easiest schedule + Tom Brady injury... Our offense sucked. I do love the attempts to sugarcoat the Dolphins pathetic offense...
I do love the attempts to pin it purely on Sparano. It's funny, teams offenses suck and the coordinators get blame. The Dolphins offense sucks and the guy who was maybe third in command of designing and executing the offense on a game to game basis gets blamed.
I'll hold out judgement but don't call me excited about this hire, it has we really couldn't get somebody better on it. I would have been more exciting for me if it had been Jackson, or Haley but at least it's not Koetter. I might be wrong but the 1st draft pick of the Sporano era in Miami was Jake Long so the idea that OL is what wins games might be his mindset and maybe we'll see that applied here.
If TB isn't injured we certainly aren't going to the playoffs... You make it seem like its so good to make it to the playoffs only to get raped by the Ravens... We were frauds that year. And it showed. 7-9, 7-9, 0-7 to start 2011...
