I semi-follow the Packers, specifically because I am a Favre fan. The reason for the '06 Favre was the team he was playing with. It was terrible. Like our team last year terrible. His resurgence last year was a direct result of the team being significantly better. You'll get the same Brett Favre no matter how old he is, until the day his arm falls off. It's what you surround him with that matters. We have the pieces to put around him right now. We have at least 3 receiving threats (Coles, Cotchery, Keller). We have a soild RB tandem (Jones, Leon). We have a vastly upgraded OLine. Sure, we could be better on offense in a couple spots, but if you add Favre into the mix with the weapons we do have, you have an offensive unit that Belichick actually has to plan for. Plus, if the Dolphins are on the list of suitors, do we really want to risk them actually fielding a competitive team this year? In addition, the warm climate and closer proximity to home for him could entice him to stay unretired for a few extra years.
I'm so confused about all this. i mean a draft pick is a gamble, also. you don't know if a guy is going to perform in the NFL. Same as we don't know what Favre's got left. I think we need to roll the dice. It would generate so much more then just getting a upgrade at QB.It would put us on the map! I think we've got one big thing all the other teams vying for a shot a Favre, don't have. that is, the biggest media market in the world! How do you think he would feel ending his career by taking the NEW YORK JETS, to thier first SUPERBOWL,in 40 yrs?
Let me be clear. I'm not for not getting Favre if we can, but this business of "get him at any price" bothers me. People are getting themselves worked up in a lather... reminds me of the old Ty Law threads. If he comes here there's a certain amount of disruption that takes place. Clemens goes on the back burner. There's also a very small timeline that we get with him. There's also the issue of giving up future picks to get this short timeline and almost "win now" situation, thereby trading off some of our future (in the way of future picks) to continue bringing in young, fresh players. These are all considerations, so whn people say, "Tanny is a JO for not picking up the phone right now!"... well, they're just not looking at all the considerations. By all means, I certainly don't think we should get into some sort of Ty Law bidding war with a laundry list of some of the above mentioned teams. Tanny should offer them a singular, reasonable pick at make the attempt, IF he and Mangini determine that the positives outweight the negatives and this is the direction they want to go in.
Based on the teams in the article above, the Pack play every one of them BUT the Jets, Dolphins and Redskins this upcoming season. That works in our favor. And they play most of those teams at home. They play @ Tampa Bay so Cheeeseheads would be spared that scenario in person, though tv salespeople in the Wisconsin area would probably hit the jackpot the next day. I think the Redskins have the best chance, because they're the Redskins. If signing players and trading players was worth a championship, the Redskins would be the biggest dynasty in al of sports. They might not win on the field, but their FO ALWAYS gets what they want in the offseason. They have a great chance. The Dolphins probably have the next best chance because of Parcells. He knows the veteran QB is the quickest route to playoffs when the rest of the cupboard seems pretty full. He brought in Vinny with Jets, Bledsoe with the 'Boys (then Vinny, again). As far as veterans go, Brett Favre is probably the best NFL veteran around since Montana entered Arrowhead Stadium. (And he left the division so the fans weren't tortured in SF). Parcells would sell his mother and race horses if he has a chance to grab this veteran for a quick-fix overnight turnaround. Their cupboards are pretty full otherwise so if this happens, our recent record against them would be in serious jeopardy. It already is being threatened with Tuna down there. He's crafty if nothing else. Then there's the Jets. I think the only thing going AGAINST the Jets to get Favre is the two teams above. Snyder and Parcells, basically. And our own FO who is seems intent on building some elusive dynasty when we only need one win. Soon. I think an intelligent majority of Jets fans would want Brett Favre over Chad/Kellen. At least with Favre, you know he can throw the f'n ball better than Chad, and w/ experience Kellen's biggest flaw there is simply no choice there between Favre and Clemens. If Brett Favre had our porous o-line last year, we STILL win half the games we lost. Ravenss, Giants, Bengals and Redskins games at least. And probably the last game of the season vs. the Pats. Brett Favre, "old and senile" NEVER throws that Kellen interception.
Upon further review of the article I posted myself, I see the Ravens are also NOT on the Packers schedule as well. Throw them in the mix. I think the order for the suitors of Favre is probably: Redskins Dolphins Jets Ravens There is no way he goes to Vikings or Bears. Houston and Carolina are playing IN Lambau. There's no way the state will allow Favre to come there and play AGAINST them there, in his first year away. I'm not knocking GB for not being a fun, swirling Metropolis like NY, Miamia or LA...but didn't they invent tipping over cows there? If Favre shows up in another uniform, cows would probably be rigged with dynamite. The Falcons are moving in the right direction. Building. Can't really call it re-building, if the original structure was a cardboard box. Favre doesn't change much there because they are a mess from top to bottom. Michael Vick would have played his worst season so far, which the pattern suggested anyway, playing on that talentless team last year. Besides Abraham, I don't think I know a single guy on their defense. Favre wants to win. He's not throwing his body out there again to be destroyed for nothing. He'll be a Redskin, because at least that team knows how to get the best player available, regardless of chemistry or logic. He'll be a Dolphin, because MOST people go to Florida to retire. The rest of the state is a shithole and a swamp but Miami? That's retiring in style. He'll be a Jet, because someone's going to FINALLY point out to our FO that Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens are the only QBs on our roster. He'll be a Raven because none of the three teams above wanted him. Fools!
just for the record..... i am fully on board for bringing Favre in here for a year or 2....... i have posted many times about clemens being the answere and i still thing he is but his development may take a couple years. i think he has game and i see similarities to a young favre in him..... now do not go flaming me for the comparison but would any of you rather go into the season with a favre - clemens combo. i would - and it would bring a measure of respect to the club similar to what parcells brought in here in 97. the cost - who knows but that can always be worked out as long as you are not mortgaging an entire draft than it makes sense. wonder what bubba franks has to say about it? jil
i heard Farve wants to go to a team with a similar offense, as he played in in GB. Out of the teams in the mix, which ones are the most similar to the GB offense?
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f..._the_jets_pass_on_brett_favre_theyre_s-3.html Brett Favre's last pass was against the Giants. His next pass should be for the Jets. Favre wants to play, but the Packers are behaving like they would rather bring back Bart Starr. The Jets are still searching for an identity, a quarterback and a Super Bowl, all these years after Broadway Joe. Connect the dots and there's a match. The Jets should get on the phone to Packers GM Ted Thompson and make an offer for Favre, especially now that there are reports that the Packers have asked multiple teams what they would give up for the future Hall of Famer. The sight of him firing passes for the Jets would create an electric environment. "He would give the Jets legitimate hope," one GM said Tuesday morning. "It makes sense for them." Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini spent a lot of Woody Johnson's money in the offseason loading up on linemen and linebackers trying to make sure the Jets don't go 4-12 again. They've created a win-now team, but they but don't have a win-now quarterback, a slight oversight. The Jets will try to get it done with Chad Pennington, an injury-prone veteran with a weak arm, or Kellen Clemens, a strong-armed kid who finished last season as the starter but played so poorly that Mangini has thrown him into an open competition this summer rather than bestow him with the title of incumbent. That says a lot. This is not fantasy football, where you can just deal for Tom Brady or Peyton Manning and make everything all right. But the Jets are presented with a unique and unexpected opportunity to trade for the NFL's all-time leader in touchdowns, yards, attempts and completions. Interceptions, too. Favre is available and he is coming off one of his best seasons with 4,155 yards, 28 TDs and 15 INTs. Pennington and Clemens combined for 3,294 yards, 15 TDs and 19 INTs. At this point in his life and career, the 38-year-old Favre and the grand stage of New York are a fit. The Jets have done a nice job of improving their talent in the offseason and Favre would have a legitimate chance to win. Sending him to the Jets would allow the Packers to get him out of the NFC. Even if Favre looked very old and very cold in the arctic conditions of the NFC Championship Game at Lambeau and threw away his Super Bowl invitation with a terrible overtime interception against the Giants last season, he still represents a drastic upgrade over Pennington and Clemens. But nothing has changed in the Jets' approach since we reported on July 13 that they had no interest in Favre. According to a source familiar with their thinking, the Jets are turned off by his age (39 on Oct.10), salary ($12million), the required draft-choice compensation (probably a second-round pick) and his commitment. The source confirmed yesterday that the Jets are still not thinking about Favre.
Wait a minute. We could get it done with a second-round pick? That's it?!?! Now I'll say "Why the HELL aren't Tanny and Mangini on a flight out to Wisconsin to personally escort Favre back here?!?!"
That's what I mean. At least PRETEND you're trying to win next year, and not be delusional about building something and winning for the long haul. There is no long haul. Civilization will be destroyed in 2012 according to the Mayans. We've got 4 years left!
. He'll be a Dolphin, because MOST people go to Florida to retire. The rest of the state is a shithole and a swamp but Miami? Not to get off topic, but I'm not so sure about that. Lets take yesterday for instance. Had a day off, got up about 7, walked about 120' to the pond in my backyard, caught 2 really nice bass. Then drove about a mile and a half, very little traffic, and played a round of golf. Went to diner in a decent steak house, $18 steak. Drove another 2 miles, and took my grandson to a good minor league baseball game in a small, but beautiful stadium. Kid got 2 foul balls. Cost $4 each to get in, and it was $1 beer night. Eye of the beholder I guess
I have beholdeth until I puketh. I grew up in NY but we vacationed in FL 3-4 times annually. I went to college in FL. I lived in FL. I KNOW Florida, from Tallahassee (for college football season only) to Winter Park to Sanibel to Miami. I've seen it's best, and it's worst and the worst is as bad as it gets. And it's best is just cosi-cosi. It is beautiful for the kinds of things you mentioned above, and for your age (grandson gives it away, peepaw). I shouldn't refer to the ENTIRE rest of the state as shithole or swamp. My apologies. I am a spoiled Angeleno and now think everywhere that isn't LA or NY is a shithole (or swamp). Nothing personal. I also refer to Paris, Milan and Madrid as shitholes.
it's not like '06 was Favre's first subpar year. He has been more medicore than good since 1999. We also should not forget that Brett would need to learn a new playbook and he wouldnt' have all offseason to learn it. Brett isn't the brightest guy out there and adjusting to a new system after so many years in GB could be disastrous. His inconsistency, age, $$$$, new playbook are all reasons I wouldn't touch Favre., I wanted Favre in 1991 not in 2008.
If I were the Packers, no way I would trade Farve to the Jets. As soon as that trade would get done, the Jets are cutting Pennington and he is signing with the Vikings. If I were them, I would try to get the Redskins to overpay. However, if we can get Farve for a 2nd round pick, this is a no-brainer. Kellen is still going to be here in 2-3 years and hopefully much improved.
How much different is our offense from the one the Packers used last year? Not much. The Packers ran the ball and set up Favre with easy completions that moved the chains. Driver and Jennings are very similar to Coles and Cotchery. Plus he would have Bubba Franks who he is very familiar with in the Red Zone and Dustin Keller who will be able to run the seam routes much better than what Donald Lee did for the Pack last year. I think the 2008 Jets are built very similar to the 2007 Packers. A run first team who will put the QB (whoever it is) in position to make easy plays and that has a very solid defense. If we want to have a shot at winning this year I think we should make the investment
That's where I'm at. I'm all for upgrading and trying to win now, but I just think Favre has been vastly overated for a long time. Last year wasn't the first season he threw away with a bonehead INT in the playoffs, either. Any NY QB would have been run out of town after one, let alone two of those.
So my question to you is: Do you truly believe that this team is better with Chad Pennington lining up behind Nick Mangold than it would be with Brett Favre instead?
He's been in a West Coast offense his entire time in GB, we don't run the WCO anymore. He'd have to learn an entire new playbook for the 1st time in 16 years, new terminology, get used to new players, new surroundings and do all of this w/o an offseason to soak things up. Again, he's not the samrtest guy around- I just don't think it would be worth giving up premium picks for him. Do you remember how awful he was in the NFC Title Game? he wasn't even pressured on that final INT and he had a wide open back out of the backfield that if he dumped it off he would have gained at leat 20 yards and been close to FG range. I wouldn't make the move, I'd rather take my shot w/ Clemens than go to favre. Sounds dumb but that's how I feel. He has been awful in the playoffs since about '98. Favre postseason '93-'97: 250-414, 3098 yds, 23 TDs, 10 INTs, 92 rating, 9-4 record Favre postseason '98-'07: 188-307, 2213 yds, 16 TDs, 18 INTs, 76 rating, 3-6 record
I don't want Favre, I think he is not what the team has been progressing to in Mangini's 3 year transformation so far, but if he does become a Jet I will welcome him with open arms. I don't see it happening though. Not the Jets!
