we can't live with the fear of "what if's". by that token, we can say,"what if he's the last piece of the puzzle"?

I can't believe that there is even one Jets fan that would not support getting Brett Favre, no matter the cost. Available hall of fame qb coming off a great season + a horrible in house QB situation = no brainer.

This is great stuff, and I didn't see such meaningful content in the other "Get Farve" thread...

If Meyers is saying get Favre it is all the more reason to avoid getting him like the plague.

I like Favre; one of my favorite non-Jets, but the guy is 38 years old - 39 in Ocotber and come on - the price is just too high for a 1 or 2 year QB at best and then maybe - big maybe - a backup after that.

I really hope the FO does not get lured into getting this aging QB; it will be known as the Fudge Packer trade.................and the Jets will get screwed yet again.

Jets won't do it cause Mangini and Tannenbaum can't handle having a superstar player/personality on the team. Just not capable of handling it.

I am sick of watching Chad's weak passes limit our playbook, get Favre! This team is built to win now!

while i was never really big on the idea, now i'm like WTF!
i've said it in a previous thread, this will give us instant credibility, put us to the forefront of the NFL, and take the Giants off the back page of the paper, every week, win or lose.
sports are a gamble, every week. we're going to have Penny sitting on the bench, making 6mil! Why not take the risk, and let clemens mentor under Bret, for the next 2 seasons?
If, for no other reason, will have all eyes on us, a team that never gets noticed, or respect. we will be the big cheese(no pun intended), in the NFL, and we were 4-12 last year!

I'm concerned we bring the guy in and at his first press conference he's all gung ho about his "new career."

Then we go 1-3 before Bye Week and here's his press conference:

Favre: "I think I made a... (gulp) mistake... (sniff). I think I should be retired... (gasp). I'm letting my teammates down and (sob... sniff) I don't think I have it any more (eeeeeeehhhhooooooo....) OHhhhh... this is SO hard... (sob, choke, wheez).

Thank you, fans (ahhhhhhh.... booo...hooo... ) for being so supportive (sniffle... sob... outright crying).... I thought I did the right thing by you and (guffaw... tears flowing like crazy) I thought I could do it here but (WHAAAAAAAAa..... WHAAAAAAAAA....) I'm letting you down and... (AHHHHHHHHH...) Where's my Mommie?

This pretty much mirrors my opinion.

I'd give next year's first and third round picks for Favre today. He instantly upgrades us from possible wild card contenders to potential Super Bowl contenders.

All the other pieces are there. You add in one of the best QBs in the game and you have a recipie for a champion. In the meantime, whatever QB(s) is/are left, be it Clemens and/or Ainge, get to learn from one of the best.

    It's a no-brainer, just as you said.

Not bad - i got a little laugh out of that.

Fear is probably what makes a lot of people who don't want to make this move not want it. People don't want to take a risk, they want to play it safe and hope what we have works out for the best.

Sometimes you have to take risks to gain large rewards. It takes some balls and the willingness to accept failure if it doesn't work out.

edit: Of course it takes no balls for me to say I want to take that risk on the internet.

If we sign him, can we at least introduce language into his contract whereby he's restricted from using the words "retire," "retirement," "retired," or "retiring?" for at least 18 months?

Being a Jets fan is enough of a roller coaster ride. It's hard enough to endure that let alone the Packers-type press conferences as well.

Not a bad idea to have a condition involved in any trade that nullifies or severely lessens picks if he decides to give the old boohoo speech prematurely.

I don't. Pissed off is for lineman. QB's should be calm, cool, and collected.

Every single day this guy is dangled by GB, I will want him to be a Jet.
He's better than our current qb's, period.
If creaky old Joe Montana could prove he still had "it" with the Cheifs, which he did, then I want one run with Favre. Just one year. What do we have to lose? Another year of experience for Clemens? Meh. ANOTHER comeback for Penningon? Meh.
If the Jets AREN'T making an attempt to bring him here, the FO should be fired right now for not making said attempt. At least TRY to pretend you're entering the year to win and not simply compete.

Favre's got the fire inside, that no Jet player, since Chrebet,or Martin, has demonstrated. we need guys that will not accept losing, and get pissed off, when they do. Bret Favre hasn't been calm cool, and collected, his whole career, and he's going to the HOF.
Pennington,is the epitomy of calm cool, and collected, and you want his head.

    Packers: Team gauges Favre suitors
    By JASON WILDE
    608-252-6176
    jwilde@madison.com

GREEN BAY ? As the Green Bay Packers wait to see whether Brett Favre will indeed file his reinstatement papers with the NFL, the club is working its way through a list of teams it sees as potential trading partners for the sort-of-retired quarterback.

According to a league source, the teams on that list include the New York Jets, the Baltimore Ravens, the Miami Dolphins and the Houston Texans in the AFC and the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins in the NFC.

General manager Ted Thompson's top two personnel lieutenants, directors of football operations John Schneider and Reggie McKenzie, are the point men on the trade talks, which the source said were only at the "due diligence" stage.

ESPN reported Tuesday that the Packers began making their calls after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell encouraged them to do so, hoping to resolve the rift between Favre and the organization before players report to training camp on Sunday.

However, the league source said Thompson had his staff compile the list of potential trade partners not long after Favre's demand for his outright release on July 11.

Favre has yet to formally apply for reinstatement from the reserve/retired list, upon which he was placed by the team April 25.

Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, said last week that he was in no rush to make the application and said it was actually the Packers who had the next move.

Having ruled out releasing Favre or trading him to one of their NFC North division rivals, especially in light of the team's tampering accusations against the Minnesota Vikings, the most logical landing spot for Favre would be Tampa Bay, where quarterback-collecting head coach Jon Gruden knows Favre (he was the Packers' wide receivers coach from 1992 through '94) and the club is embroiled in a contract dispute with starter Jeff Garcia, who led the team to the playoffs last year.

Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen, aware of the tampering charge against the Vikings, chose his words carefully when asked by the St. Petersburg Times about Favre, saying, "There's been so many reports that have come out in the last few weeks ... I can't keep up with all of them right now."

When asked if he saw any scenario Favre might play for the Bucs this season, Allen said, "All of those conversations are hypotheticals. Only the Packers or the player can ever discuss those things."

Meanwhile, the investigation into the tampering charges against the Vikings continues, according to an NFL source.

The source confirmed several reports that Favre had used a Packers-issued cell phone to make repeated calls to Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and head coach Brad Childress.

The source said the phone logs of those calls are the Packers' main evidence for bringing the tampering charge.

Favre's use of a phone on which the Packers could review all calls had been suggested last week after The Associated Press reported that Green Bay informed the NFL it felt "an investigation of the phone records would show more than 'normal contact' between the Vikings and Favre, even before he formally asked for his release to play for another team."

If you'd be assured of getting 2007 Favre there would be probably be no issue (although a first and third is still too high). However, what happens if you get the 2005 / 2006 Favre? Then you've screwed the team for the future for a guy who will be 39 years old during the season (albeit a durable 39 year old). And if he plays like he did those years and the Jets aren't winners this year Favre would probably not be back for 2009.
