all of those draft busts have one thing on Gholston - Games started.

Gholston can't see the field, therefore he's a bigger bust.

Tannenbaum isn't really a scout or some great analyzer of talent - He's an accountant and deal maker....

If a Head Coach goes bonkers over a player that he has to live with day in and day out, most respectable coaches get a little more weight......And yeah, at the time Mangini had that respect.

Mangini was WAYYY more the talent alanyzer on the Tangini team...

And you know what - He had a pretty damn good track record overall... And I give Mangini a ton of credit for the talent on the Jets now.

But, THIS was the one pick that MANGINI blew.

One thing I like to do is go back and read old draft posts - I was Never a Gholston guy - But, the badwagon was loaded....

And one reason I don't absolutely kill Mangini is the fact that Gholston was rated by most experts to be a 1st round pick at least - This was NOT Dwayne Robertson out of no where where a GM traded TWO 1st round picks...

That's not really a great argument since Gladys has 2 solid starters in front of him on the depth chart.

it would at least be nice to see him be a rotational guy.

jay ratliff is a good example of a guy who was a young guy with no GSs but he stats were there because he was rotated into the game so often.

Gholston gets 12 snaps as a down linemen. gay.

Robertson and Gholston were both basically unanimous top 10 picks, taken at 4 and 6.

The difference is people called Robertson a bust, but compared to Gholston after 1.5 years, Robertson was an All-Pro.

I don't know if I'd call Gholston that big of a bust, because I thought there were masses of people that knew he would and/or expected him to bust. Therefore, if many people thought that he would bust (which so far he has), then that's not really that big of a bust; more like, he is what many people thought he was.

When I think of epic draft busts, I think of the players who were supposed sureshots and took everyone by surprise when they never amounted to anything.

Hmm interesting I could kind of see this because think about it Cleveland just pulled in an awful draft class not that all the players were bad but even needs wise it was not good. Meanwhile Tanny just had an great draft class with limited picks. Frankly outside of the Gholston pick its hard to criticize alot of Tannys draft decisions

It could perhaps happen...how crazy would it be if Mangini wanted this guy unfortunately it looks like he will be gone at the end of the year all but eliminating these possibilities.

Gholston has to be considered the worst Jets draft pick of all. He has done nothing. NOTHING

This probably would have been a tough deal to fit in under the cap. All the bonus money that Gholston got last year comes due immediately and then the Jets have to pony up a big bonus for Sanchez and you probably are looking at 22 million on the cap between the two figures - for one roster slot.

I honestly can't remember another guy on our radar that year other than McKelvin, and we already had a first-rounder invested in Revis. I hate the pick as much as Thomas in 2002 but Cimini has to find out who else we wanted before Mangini persuaded us to take Gholston.

I still don't get why someone has to be blamed. The jets were in no position to move down in the draft. They couldn't get a better prospect at a position in need and no one else was really worth the 6th overall pick. Hindsight is 20-20

because the FO lobbied hard for McKelvin at number 6 and Mangini got his way.

that's the focal point of this story. Clinkscales, terry fucking bradway, even Tanny would have all loved McKelvin. Mangini was the one who said fuck that and demanded Gholston.

Not sure if I consider Alex Smith a bust yet. He has played a few decent games this year. Yeah his play may not justify his draft selection, but I wouldn't call him a bust just yet.

As for Gholston, LBs in the top 10 will generally produce some sort of results, but yeah, Gholstons stats are just mind blowing. A 6th overall pick, a LB, doesn't have a single sack in 24 games? OK, maybe hard luck on sacks, but even his tackles are unbelievable.

doing well. Nice to see you.

It actually never crossed my mind to put it in that thread.

Sadly, it would have 1) been posted twice and then edited by me. Or, as we've seen it didn't get notice and needs its own thread for everyone to see.

I could turn this into a college study - The psychology of a message board.

McKelvin, Clady, and Mayo were right there. Mangini pressured the FO to pick up the workout warrior instead of taking one of two major needs and a much better option at a lesser need. Even if Mayo was forced to play out of position at OLB, he still would have had at least one sack by now!!!! Gholston had one good game against Jake Long, clean up against a bunch of scrubs, and then didn't show up to Ohio State's bowl game and yet Mangini couldn't get Gholston's bench press out of his mind.
