How can posters still blame Geno for the 3-game stretch following the bye? Rex admitted that was his fault. He got too passive/conservative and shut down the offense, affecting Geno's confidence and asked him to be a game manager type, which he isn't.
Look he asked me to grade the season, not the last 2 games. Milliner was horrible through 14 games and shined in the last two. He showed a lot, im thrilled he came around but if you want to evaluate his play throughout the entire season it was an F. I think he can come up HUGE next season but that wasnt the question, the question was how he played in 16 games. You cant ignore he was benched multiple times.
For rookies I put much more of an emphasis on the end of the season and how they progressed then the beginning of the season and how they started. Geno - He struggled mightily at times but did finish the last quarter of the season playing better. Waaaay to many turnovers. I do worry that his playing better seems to directly correlate to him running the ball which I don't care for out of QB's. He also had much better numbers when Kerley was in the game which seems to be a direct indicator that with more talent he will be more successful. Well no shit. If he can clean up his fundamentals in the offseason and we can add some legit offensive weapons maybe we have something here. C+ Milliner - For nearly 2/3 of the season he looked like a terrible CB who would never amount to anything. To be fair, CB is probably the most difficult position in the NFL for rookies now with all the rules tilted towards the offense. Yes, I think it's even more difficult than QB. Rex also probably asks more out of his CB's than any coach in the league. The final third of the season he turned it around 180 degrees and looked like a pretty good NFL corner capping it off with back to back weeks with INT's and AFC defensive player of the week honors week 17. B- Winters - Not too much good to say about him. He didn't get as many penalties as Vlad but stunk up the joint in pass protection to the point where they basically turned him into an extra blocker on pass plays a lot of the time instead of a main pass blocker. He did have to switch positions but guard should be easier to play. F+ Richardson - Obviously A+, hopefully defensive rookie of the year. I think Rex did him a favor in that department getting him a couple of TD's.
Milliner-hard to measure a rookie corner on the expectations of playing like a vet no matter how high they're drafted. still in terms of how well he could have reasonably played he started to progress rather well as the year continued, not just the last two games either: B- Richardson- Couldn't have done any better, a rookie of the year: A+ Smith- played clutch in moments with 4 comeback drives and found an effective groove reading defenses making decisions and overall making plays in december... which was after he shat the bed with play where he did none of that. the turnovers keep me from being too gracious, still worth focusing on in 2014: B- Winters- Was a wink link on his offensive line most times, kept Smith running, rough learning curve: D+ T-Bo- did his job as a pass catcher alright, but wasn't a spectacular runner though: C Aboushi/Campbell-... did nothing, see them in camp next year i guess.: N/A
QB, is a complex position, is numbers are hideous, bur for the simple fact, he didn't wilt an die in the pressure from the fans an media, I'll give him a B, however next season will bring much higher expectations, its make or break
Milliner better than Wilson, replacing the best CB in the game. He did alright for a rook. C- Geno, replacing an awful Sanchez. C+ The rest are crap shoots, low rounders who may pan out. Didn't expect much, happy with most of them.
Geno Smith- He was up and down but ended on a high note the last 2 weeks. He did enough to merit not giving up on him, so ill give him a B-. Dee Millner- He was a problem early on but like Geno he came on late and showed promise. I was happy as hell he played so well against Miami. He Needed it. Ill Give him a C because early on he was getting a Sheldon Richardson- I love this guy, and the best part is nobody thought it was a good idea to take him! He has to be in the running for DROY and the best is yet to come! A+!!!!!!! Brian Winters- Talk about disappointment. He got abused almost every game and showed no improvement. He gets a F. Tommy Bohannon- He did all right for such a late draft pick. Ill give him a C+
Tough to grade Geno as he was not prepared to be an NFL QB and was thrown into the fire. As an overall NFL QB you would have to give him a D, but for the situation Geno was in, I think a B+ is probably fair. Richardson gets an A. Milliner gets a C with a huge upside. Winters a D. Bohannon a B.
I disagree here. Winter showed some stellar play the last couple games. The line gave up zero sacks in the last two games and he laid out some key blocks in the run game against MIA. I thought he was our best run blocker that game. He was an utter turnstile most of the game but he certainly showed serious improvement. I think the OL will be much better next year with some continuity. Remember he missed a majority of the offseason with an injury and didn't get a lot of reps with the ones. I think will a full offseason we'll see a big improvement in Winters.
Geno- C+. Despite an all-time awful 4 or 5 week stretch (highlighted by some of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen) he showed growth towards then end and showed a good attitude. So far, he's shown that he can take the heat of being a starting QB. INT's need to go WAY down next year, but he gave me hope. Richardson- A+. Duh. Future pro-bowler, if not an all pro. The guy is an absolute horse Millner- C-. Would have been a D-, if not an F before the last couple of games. Not totally his fault (tough position and Bama doesn't teach the backpedal) but he was laughably bad at times, even for a rookie. He had 3 or 4 absolutely embarrassing "tackle" attempts this season. Bohanan- B-. Seems like he'll be a solid FB going forward. Not exactly an impact player (No FB is) but any time you get a 16 game starter in the 7th round, its a big win. Winters- D- 3rd round interior linemen should be able to step right in and hold their own IMO. That's not a "project" pick. That's a "lets get a guy who we can slide right in" pick. There's very little, if any reason to ever take a project guard, so I cant grade him as such. He got his chance and was horrible. He was bad enough to drag down the play of the 2 pro-bowlers that were forced to cover for him.
So far Geno's grades: 7 B's 11 C's 1 D You guys are delusional fanboys. C means average. Lots of excuse makers here, the wide receivers boo hoo it doesn't matter, his season was pretty bad. one guy even said "well Rex blamed himself for that bad stretch"... newsflash homie, he's the HC - he always does that. Many of those were C+'s and I can't believe I even saw some B+'s. Are you f'n crazy? Geno had 3 games out of 16 that were B worthy. The rest were mostly D's and F's. I'm glad he ended on a good note and truly hope he can improve his shit this off season but let's not kid ourselves, his season was a C- at best - and that's being generous because he ended on a good note the last two games - realistically he gets a D, the last two games bumped it up from an F.
How are guys giving Milliner the same or higher grades than Geno Sheldon- A+ Milliner- C- Geno- C+ Winters- C Bohanon- C+
Dee Milliner- B I understand the pick & agree w/ the overall philosophy of BPA. But I thought Milliner was alittle overrated coming out & w/ the Revis trade was kind of treading water. I thought he had a typical rookie corner type season. But he definitely has some physical tools to work w/ & showed alot of progress over the last month of the season. Sheldon Richardson A+ Absolute home run pick. They made it in the face of alot of skepticism. He IS a good fit for Rex's D & maybe the best player in a front 7 loaded w/ talent. This DL could be frightening w/ another year in the weight room & working w/ Dunbar. Geno Smith B- It was a pick the Jets had to make. He offered great value & the Jets had a major need at QB. He has some major aspects he needs to improve on..but there were ALOT of encouraging signs.Let's see where things go w/ a better surrounding cast Brian Winters D I Liked Winters alot coming out after seeing his practice footage at senior bowl. He had good feet & was very stout at the point of attack. He showed neither of that for a handful of games this year. His hands were slow & he was playing w/ poor leverage. I thought he started playing alittle better somewhere around the Oakland game.He had a few impressive moments especially on 2nd level run blocks. He really wasn't ready to start..they just were desperate to get Ducasse out of the line-up Tommy Bohanan- C+ Back-up/role player type. If he can play special teams he has a chance to stick around for a few years.
Dee Miliner - C - Considering his pedigree and success in the SEC, I expected a world beater, but CB is a tough position to learn and he struggled with injuries and miss practice/camp. Since a lot of the missed time was driven by hold out, its self inflicted and not an excuse. That said, he closed the season well and if he continues to develop still possesses the talent to be a great corner. Sheldon Richardson - A+ - Defensive rookie of the year. Tremendous engine and he won me over forever by running down Cam Newton from like 3 yards behind him. Amazing. Geno Smith - B - Up and down, some horrible moments and stats, but ultimately he went 8-8 and played very well down the stretch showing the kind of improvements (ball security, decision making, running no huddle, etc.) and take the game by the scruff of the neck (the tough runs against the Dolphins and Pats, command in the huddle) that sent me the right signals of potential. The stark change in his turnover rate in the final stretch was noteworthy. Brian Winters - C+ - Improved run blocking as the season progressed, but the pass protection scares the hell out of me, and he had a lot to do with Geno's post bye slump because Smith could barely receive the snap before having bodies in his face for a while there. Tommy Bohanon - B+ - Great production from the late pick. Nice running and caught the ball well (something I think we'll exploit more moving fwd).
Progression >>> Inconsistency I can invest in someone who gets better from week to week. Milliner has shown more upside.
I think with both these guys they're being graded on a curve, people are being curteous with Dee because of the fact that its not an easy to learn position, and despite having awful performances some of Geno's better games (re:like 6-7 of the 8 wins) show a bit of promise worth an okay grade... for a rookie.
I always considered a C as pretty crappy. D was unacceptable and as my mother put it F stood for "fucking dead". I also put more emphasis on progression and how rookies finished the season when grading them.
Milliner - C showed enough promise but needs consistency Richardson - A+ best player on the draft. Geno - C another player with promise, played excellent in the last 4 Winters - C a position change for a rookie takes time. This pick will look better next year. Bohanon - A fucking + a starter in round 7. That's a fife from the draft gods, or a GM whose kid goes to wake forest
Comparing grades from one poster to another is difficult without knowing the parameters being used. Are you grading purely the player of the pick? Are you grading based off comparing their performance to top vets at the position? Are you grading based off of performance in comparison to draft position taken? Are you curving based on rookie status but ignoring if it was a 1st or 5th round pick? That being said I think some are over grading Sheldon, solid A not and A+. I love Richardson this is not intended to be construed as hate. I would have preferred that we would have taken Star Lotulelei at the time (wasn't against the DL pick as they were clearly the 2 BPA's ) Will be interesting to watch these 2 in the next few years. I would give Milliner a B-, people on this board seem to forget that all corners get beat (incl Revis) and get burned, Cromartie got burned twice as much as Dee. His growth as made it pretty obvious that he belongs as a starter in this league. My Bold prediction in 4 years Dee will be the better player than Sheldon in regards to others playing their respective positions. Geno gets a C+, in terms of play it probably should be a D but I will give some weight to being a 2nd round QB (not 1st) starting all games with no weapons and a shitty OL. Winters - F, his play actually made Vlad's look good and that is hard to do. Bohanon - B-, just being able to get a contributing player at that draft position is a plus in his favor, didn't do anything out of this world outstanding but didn't do much to hurrt either.
