So you think it's okay to rip on the color of their skin? Because that's the whole point of the name "Redskin".

I don't think that's at all accurate to the origin of the name but I'm all ears.

Okay, I just want to understand. Some of my best friends are Jews. But they have unusually thick skin, so maybe they aren't the best guage.

saying something like 'dont be a jew' when trying to get someone to loan you money would be an example of the term being a slur

    Stop being such a redskin.

What about the NY Niggas? Alliteration is always fun.

    Interesting about the jew comments.

Ill quickly mention, Over here in the UK, ill call it soccer for you guys. There's a team call Tottenham Hotspur. Who for years were owned by jews and were in a mainly jewish part of laaaandon at the time.

And are famous for having anti semetic chants towards them
Anyway I was at the Sunderland vs Tottenham game a few weeks ago, Sat right in front of a few thousand spurs fans.

Anyway they were all chanting YID ARMY! YID ARMY!

Its a culture, Its their team. and they enjoy it

It's not an insult either. It's similar to naming your team "the redheads" or "the blondes" or the "brown eyes". There isn't anything inherently bad about the name itself. It's like calling an African American a black person. It is what it is. I hope people don't consider that insulting. Redskins as a football team seems like it would a compliment saying that natives were bad ass like our team is.

Personally as someone who has a tribal roll number (Karuk)I think anyone who gets their panties in a bunch about the Redskins is overly sensitive. I mean really isn't Notre Dame known as the "Fighting Irish"?

It's not like saying "the blondes" because their skin isn't red. And nobody calls black people "Blackskins," it would be offensive if you did.

The truth of the matter is people don't have to take care in what's right or wrong to say about Native Americans because there are so few left. There isn't exactly nationwide representation for them as a people. Maybe that's why people think calling someone a Redskin is OK but I really don't think it is.

And comparing it to something like the fighting Irish (like another poster did) isn't fair either because like black people, Native Americans have a history of unfair treatment and persecution in American history. That's why I think it's in particularly poor taste.

Well, wikipedia was the first site that came up and says it's a derogatory based on skin color.

I was the poster who mentioned the "Fighting Irish" and as I said I'm a member of the Karuk tribe and don't find it offensive. As far as discrimination against the Irish you might want to research how newly immigrated Irish were treated in the 1800's.

I'm aware of that Irish history actually. I am also half-Irish if that somehow matters. But i guess my point was it's not nearly as bad. Neither the discrimination nor the team names. The Fighting Irish isn't great, it's riffing on a negative stereotype, but at least it's not a racial slur.

You say you aren't offended by it and that's fine. I can obviously respect that. However I personally know a few Native Americans and they consider it a slur and I've seen similar responses online before. So for that reason I consider it one. It seems strange coming from me to you saying it is a slur but I'm just taking my cues from others who have a much better claim.

I personally wouldn't ever feel comfortable saying it outside of the team name.
