I guess I was mistaken about Godwin. I thought I had read that he was the #1 WR on the Bucs. As I said, I've never seen Kirk play, but his production looks pretty solid to me especially since he would be our #3 or #4 WR. Being cheap isn't a reason to keep someone. He's been on the Jets for 3 years now learning to play WR. He can't get open consistently. The only thing he's good for is gadget plays, screens, and shorter routes, and try to get YAC. I had some hopes that he would develop into a weapon because of his elusiveness/quickness, but he hasn't. IMO Smith is Tariq Black or any of the other stiffs that have been on the Jets' roster at WR over the last 10 years. Mims should get one more year if for no other reason than he was a 2nd round pick, but that's it unless he shows big time improvement this season.
That's surprising because everything I've read or heard about him was that he was not much of a blocker and had no desires to be.
I missed both of those occasions, but like I said, I don't really follow any other teams. Thanks for correcting me. So maybe they'd be willing to trade up, but I think it's more likely they'd try to get our #4 to get their QB. IDK if they have enough to make it worth our while, but I guess JD will listen to offers.
That would not be my preferred way to go with the draft, but I do see your logic. The bottom line for me is that they have to make sure Zach has every chance to become the QB they saw when they drafted him and they need him to be. Yes, Safety is a big need, but they can survive in 2022 with whoever they can add...frankly, if they NOTHING to upgrade the "D" other than get healthy they can get by. In contrast, the offense must become playoff-caliber or close to it. That said, I'm NOT advocating they go all "O" in FA and the draft, I'm just saying that if you had to make a choice one side or the other, it has to be favoring the "O". And the reason is that, with the exception of Edge, you can almost always find starting level defensive players past the first round, but finding elite QBs, LTs, WRs, past the top 10 in the first round is almost impossible - it happens but you can't count on it. Last year and this year the Jets were blessed to have 2 first rounders and so they focused on "O" last year, and I'd be surprised if they don't do that again this year based on what I said above.
I understand leaning toward offense to support Zach, but a defense does help too. Our D couldnt get off the field on 3rd down, which makes it harder to get into a rhythm on offense. Just to play devils advocate to the narrative that elite WRs need to be top 10 picks, take a look at PFF best 25 WRs of 2021 list. There not the end all be all, but its a good list. Guess how many are top 10, or even 1st round picks? 3 in the top 10 (chase, waddle, evans), and the majority on day 2. https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-final-2021-wide-receiver-rankings
Yes, the D needs help too, but it won't matter one whit how good/great the D is if Zach doesn't develop. That's why when push comes to shove, JD needs to err on the side of the offense. I know that may not make Saleh happy with him being a D guy, but surely he realizes that if Zach doesn't develop, he's not winning crap and won't keep his job. I think the best way to help the team is, with the exception of signing a TE, signing a depth WR, and re-signing LDT, to use FA to address deficient areas of the D like CB, S and a run-stopping DT. Then with the exception of taking an Edge and S, to use most of the draft picks on offense: TE (2), WR, RB/FB, and OL depth.
I agree. The defense was atrocious. This team doesn’t need a WR 1st round pick, it needs someone who can help stop the other team
there was a short time he was before they got AB and when evans got hurt but even then they had brate and oj howard. it was the last 3 games of 2019 i agree cheap isn't a reason alone but you need cheap guys to round out the roster. he was a converted QB. he does enough to warrant a roster spot. especially if crowder and berrios are both gone we'll need a gadget guy for this offense.
i agree we could survive but we've dumped so much into offense and we just switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3 last year and really need to build the defense. ours was worst in the NFL. hamilton is a luxury for sure. if we don't get him I understand. i think he'll be BPA and he's the top player in the draft. I do get your logic too though. there isn't a right answer at all. we'll have to wait and see what JD does
We really have not dumped that much into the offense. Have you forgotten that for the previous 10 years, while the picks were fairly evenly split between offense and D, most of the offense's picks were mid and low rounds, and that almost every one of the 1st round picks went to the D??? It doesn't matter that our D was the worst in the NFL. Talent was part of it, but part of it was a complex new scheme, a big part of it was the injuries to Lawson and Joyner, and part of it was stubbornness and refusing to adjust adapt to the talent they had on hand. If the CS does a better job, the D will be better. Also, if the offense is thriving and scoring more points, the D won't always be playing from behind, they'll be more rested and should be able to get off the field more often. Again, if Zach doesn't develop it won't matter how good or even great the D is, the Jets aren't gonna win and Saleh won't remain HC for long. They can't fix everything at once. Fix the offense and do what they can on D this year, and then they can focus pretty exclusively on the D in 2023.
since JD took over in his 1st 2 drafts 1) OT 1) OG 1) QB 2) WR 2) WR thats our top 5 picks over the past 2 years all on offense even if you include 3rd and 4th rounders 3) S 3) Edge 4) QB 4) OT 4) RB 4) RB thats a total of 9 out of our top 11 picks the last 2 years on offense. We need to start spending some top picks on defense and get players made for the scheme. Our D couldn't stop anyone last year and zach was forced into obvious throwing situations which isn't good for any QB especially a rookie QB. getting a stout defense so zach can run the offense as intended and not play from behind all the time would help him alot. we already built him an o-line thanks to 2 high picks and 3 free agents. we also got him a stud WR in moore, a stud RB in carter, and signed davis. the defense hasn't added anything of note outside of lawson who hasn't played a down and we got lucky with a few DBs playing way better then their draft spot. I think proven vets on offense would help zach more then rookies so we can spend our cap room on offense then draft heavy on D. I know you want a WR high (burks) and I wouldn't be upset with it at all, but I think we really need an edge in the 1st right now and normally i'd say edge and WR but hamilton is too good to pass up IMO and he's a way better prospect then any WR in the draft
Judging only by the past 2-3 years, yes we've dumped a lot into the offense, but think about the 15-20 years before that. Quite some time ago I posted how many higher round picks were used on the "D" vs. the "O" and it was way lopsided in favor of the "D" which is why we find ourselves in the situation we're in today. And it's not about "getting even" with the defense, it's about doing the sensible thing in a heavily offense oriented league.
That’s just his opinion. First off, I don’t trust anyone who uses the term true WR1. What an overused bullshit phrase. He also led the Bucs in receiving and YPG so not sure where he’s getting that he was their WR3.
Godwin is legit a perfect fit for this scheme. Great route runner, can play outside or inside. Pay the man his $ (Malkovich in Rounders voice.) Godwin-Davis-Moore-Berrios and/ or a draft pick is legit. Won’t happen anyway, he’ll probably be franchised right
Not sure how the answer could be anything but "It depends on who it is" or "Yes, but only for (please specify who)" which are basically the same. If you pick "Yes but only for Edge" or "WR", then you are ok with any edge or WR. If you say yes or no to anything then you don't want Aaron Donald for the #10.
15-20 years ago doesn't matter as none of those players are on the team. Off the top of my head, only 2 starters remain from before JD was here, mosley and Q. 3 if we keep foley (which I hope we do). pretty much the last 5 head coaches we had in that span were all defensive guys except gase who was short lived and was only around for 2 drafts and 1 of them wasn't by JD. people say it's an offensive league but realistically the defense has been winning superbowls. we haven't seen shootouts. 7 of the top 10 defensive teams made the playoffs. 8 of the top 10 offenses made the playoffs. it isn't so much the best offenses, it's the best well rounded teams. more then half the teams in the playoffs were top 10 in defense and offense. you can't win by having a lights out offense with no defense.
he's not that good. most of his production is from the slot. he isn't worth the 20 mil a year he's gonna get. it's fools gold. he was the 3rd best WR on his own team this season.
I never said "Offense wins championships". Of course you need to have some balance, but it needs to lean towards the offense. Mull this over: Since 2010 up until Douglas (2020 draft) the Jets took 35 players on "D" and 34 players on "O" - balanced, right? But when you look at how many in each category were taken in the first 3 rounds it's: 20 for the "D" and 8 for the "O". I'm not going to get into the abysmal player selections - on both sides of the ball - because that's independent of the team philosophy which has been "All about the "D"" for decades as these numbers show. So for those complaining that we've been leaning too much towards the offense these past two drafts, I say "Good! It's about time!" That said, we have some very big holes on the defense, beginning with no stud Edge rusher for almost 20 years,. And of course Safety. And then there's the matter of shoring up the run defense with more stout LB'ers. But keep in mind this is a rebuilding project - you're not going to have everything in place this year. But what does need to be proven it's in place is that we have a FQB and an offense that can put points on the board in a scoring league. If we have to wait to address the defense until next year, I'll just respond with what I and the rest of the offense-loving posters were told: be patient.
