makes sense to do the 5th year option, as it will give the Jets flexibility next year. personally, i think Coples would have to show vast improvement as an OLB this season to warrant anywhere near an 8M salary. i think it's more likely he'll become trade bait next offseason. His best role is situational pass rusher, but some 4-3 team will take a chance at him being an effective every down End.
And he may be that power end some team is looking for. You combine a Coples with Healthy JPP, Jarad Allen or A Charls Johnson type and his sack numbers are 8-10 consistently. He would be great in Carolina or Cinci IMO. Was Rex pick for sure and didn't really like the pick from the get go. That said I hope he has an amazing year
i admit it's quite possible he could flourish as a power end role in a 4-3. but what i keep coming back to.......if he's capable of setting the edge against the run, and providing an edge rush, then why can't he do that as a 3-4 OLB? the power end role, and his role last year (and this year) is not that much different. ie he is used in a similar way with only occasionally dropping into coverage as additional responsibility. i hope he has an amazing year too.. that said, at this point, i would trade him next offseason while he still has that 4-3 interest, rather than pay him 8M.. i just haven't seen enough, and am not convinced it's all role which has been the problem. he's been an inconsistent player regardless of position.
