Greene can be a top 10 back. To do that he needs to stay healthy (which he has trouble with) and needs a good offensive line. Greene is great if he has holes opened up for him and he can get to the linebackers and secondary to punish them. Look at how big this hole is back in Greene's rookie year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8dtySlji1A&feature=related He did average 5.0 that year, and he had a few games where he got 20 carries. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/9329/gamelog;_ylt=Aiiyb7bZy5SxU4x7I39RTBH.uLYF?year=2009 He's just not a back like Peterson who can make something out of nothing. He's got plenty of speed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuyEZjAblkA&feature=related and still runs well and with good vision when the blocking can get him past the line of scrimmage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLlfDZM6VKQ&feature=related
If we draft a RB again this season I'm going to pull my hair out. If they really decide to replace Greene (which I doubt) I hope they pick up a free agent that can block and catch in addition to running.
I think Greene is fine. His running style means he will never be a guy to carry the rock 25 times a game but in the 15-20 carry range he can be very good. I think the problem this year has been the blocking not Greene. Last yr he got off to a slow start and LT got off to a fast one so his playing time was severely cut back. I think the Jets need two backs though like in 09 if they want to be a ground and pound team. we need someone else who can get 10-15 carries in the first 3 quarters and then let Greene punish the other teams D when its worn down late in the game.
Don't think it's possiable with our Cap situation, but I would love to pair up S. Greene with the Kid frome the Bears ,Forte (SP)...Man that would be a 1/2 punch.... Also Greene is a North /south runner and really has problems getting out to the edges, he lacks the speed needed to do that. I was hoping and still do that McKnight will develop enough next season to take it to the next level. He has improved greatly in the return game, just not enough at RB....
Forte is soft and accounts for the most negative yard running plays in the entire NFL. He can spell Greene for the third down back spot though.
We have been behind so quickly in games this year that we haven't had that much of a chance to lean on the run game.
it all starts on the o-line - the rest is easy - lets see how they perform down the stretch - i have a strong feeling greenes best games are ahead of him
Well I mean if u look at the season as a whole, there is no question the Oline and Defense has regressed. Eve statistic wise, they've both regressed. I dont think Sanchez has regressed, I think he has taken a step forward, although its not as much as every critic would like... Greene is good at what he does- he hits the hole and punishes defenders. Thats his game. But when the Oline isnt playing like a top 5 offensive line then the running game becomes practically nonexistent. I do not think he has regressed as a player, just his play has because of the offense as a hole has(a lot bc of Oline but also bc we arent stretching the field, allowing the defense to stack 11 men within 20 yards of the LOS) He's been impressive the last couple of weeks especially with hurt ribs, but I just dont think he is the type of RB that is going to be a game changer or a top 8-10 or so RB. If McKnight proves to be a good 3rd down back that can also handle 10 carries a game, then they could make a nice duo. Maybe sorta like a deangelo williams/jonathan stewart deal but thats probably being too optimistic
Like others, I think Greene's slow start to the season was a result of the OL. Only the elite backs churn out yards with garbage blockers. Greene isn't elite, but he's legit. He can wear down a defense, his main problem has been staying healthy.
The way greene is getting his yards and falling for more is resembling Vet type plays gett 4-5 yds not getting killed getting up slowly its nice to see him with brusied ribs hlding together... He's not so reckless running with the ball like he was
If by "regressing" u guys mean he has a YPC almost same as last year, then yes. If by "regressing" u guys mean he has more than doubled his TD total than last year, then yes. If by "regressing" u guys mean he has outproduced his last years totals in fewer games, then yes. Some of these posts r sick. He has maintained his last years production level on similar workload. How is that regressing? He has done it with an inferior run blocking OL this year. Yeah, he's the starter and not the 40% workload 2nd RB, but we also haven't ran the ball as much. We saw the horrendous OL play at the beginning of the season n now it's much improved. U know what else improved? Shonne's play. 87 carries, 411 yards, 4.7ypc n 3TDs in the last 5 games excluding Broncos. How is that regressing???
Even the best RBs look like crap when their o-line can't block for their lives. Greene lately has been doing extremely well and it all starts with the blocking up front.
Its easy to cherry pick stats, but in all reality Forte would be an absolute beast for this team. He has superb speed and is a homerun threat on nearly every carry, he also is one of the best pass catching RB's in the league, and hes above average in pass blocking. Dont you remember how many games we won last year due to LT's ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and make plays in open space?? Imagine if you had Forte in that exact role, I think our offense could really open up.
Look at this smartass here...Take a look at when this thread was made and come back at me. Make sure you wear your glasses.
