    Sean Taylor dead at 24

MIAMI -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died, a day after he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein.

He said Taylor's father called him around 5:30 a.m. to tell him the news.

"His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans."

He said he did not know exactly when Taylor died.

Doctors had been encouraged late Monday night when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand. But Sharpstein said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had squeezed the nurse's hand.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

The 24-year-old Redskins safety was shot early Monday in his home in the upper leg, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss.

Damn, it sucks to be an athlete these days.

My mom woke me up an hour before I usually wake up for school, and I had a little trouble going back to sleep. This is sad.

R.I.P. Sean Taylor. My prayers are with him and his family.

What a sad day. RIP Sean Taylor  I really hope they find the person who did this. Something tells me it won't be too hard because I have a feeling Taylor knew his killer.

I dont know what is worse, leaving his wife, or his baby...this is horrible news, and regardless of his troubled past, absolutely nobody deserves this....My thought and prayers go out to his family.

I woke up mid morning...(its 4:50AM) and just couldnt fall back to sleep...utterly disturbing.

RIP and such, this might be bad timing as I wanted to ask this earlier but did he get shot near his nuts? I'm just asking because they said there was a lot of blood loss and I heard it was in the groin area. Just an honest question because I'm curious.

I'm not a doctor but I believe the artery is located in your inner thigh, so yes pretty close to the jewels.

Upper leg. Look up the femoral artery on a medical website for more details.

Wow. This whole story has been ridiculous. When I first heard he got shot in the leg I didn't think it would be this serious. When it hit the artery though, you knew things wouldn't be so good.

I'm shocked. Sean was a favorite player of mine and had a great career ahead of him. My prayers are with his family and friends.

    R.I.P. Sean.

I just read the ESPN article where they noted that there was a previous break in at the residence less than 2 weeks prior.

You are a professional athlete, oodles of money, get a freaking ALARM system and turn it on where you head to sleep. It's a simple and cheap solution for someone in his situation. Hook up a central station for $30 a month and you've just upped the cards a little more in your favor. I've had one for years and the piece of mind that this buys you, knowing that it's that much tougher for the average mope criminal to find his way into your home without detection, is invaluable.

I'm pushing the alarm because both instances show "forced entry." Also, if someone broke into my home less than 2 weeks prior and left a knife on my bed you'd better be sure that I'd have something more potent than a machete laying next to my bed, illegal or not. Cuff me after I've shot the guy dead.

Too bad, a promising career cut very short.
