I agree that Schotty, as ususal, called some head-scratching plays today and I'm certainly not crazy about his overall body of work this year, but today's loss was much more about the D. Yes, Sanchez looked like a rookie once again, but at least he was up to the task when he had to make some big plays under pressure at the end of the game to take the lead. The D (especially the secondary) looked confused and unprepared for much of the day and completely blew it when they had a chance to seal the win in the end... ...that's absolutely unacceptable coming off the bye week. Unbelievable.
What's all this nonsense about championing an OC who gives the team a lead with minutes to go? A good OC does his job the entire game and creates a difference in points that cannot be overcome by a single scoring drive by the opposing offense. The defense had its issues today but this offense is a hell of a lot better than the numbers it is putting on the scoreboard and that is a reflection of the OC.
that would make me happy in two ways. i don't feel Weis is a college coach, but for him to come here and save Sanchez would be fucking awesome. The last time he was here this team nearly went to the SB.
in a heartbeat! The guy is a SB winning OC....Shotty comes from Shotty Sr.'s nutscacks. The only issue at hand Is how Him and Rex divide lunch.... Twin Tonkas!
I don't give a shit that the wide receiver reverse only resulted in a lost play. That was a horrible, horible play call. Akin to the botched shovel pass call against the Raiders. When I saw that play, I ran out of the room, apologized to my fellow patrons foor knocking over a beer, screamed "SCHOTTENHEIMER!!!" and chain smoked two cigarettes as I watched the rest of the drive through the window from outside. We burnt a timeout for no fucking reason that drive, too. After this season, Bill Callahan, architect of the best rushing attack in the NFL, deserves a shot. With Callahan, we'll have continuity for Sanchez, competency for us.
At the most rudimentary level, OC'ing is a pretty simple science: call plays (run, pass) that keeps the Defense guessing and call plays in timely fashion. The better OCs do this. Think about Schotty's playcalling; does he do this?
its also about doing what works against the defense on that day. passes over the middle and running with Shonn Greene were working great. But Braylon Edwards has to throw an option pass because it keeps defenses guessing right???? I'm not pissed about the loss in the final seconds more than I am about that one call. Its getting Bob Sutton bad at this point. And if that play resulted in Edwards throwing a pick, every TGG member would want the Offensive Coordinator's head.
I didn't like that call either but to nitpick about one call in a game is pretty ridiculous. You will be able to watch every game in the league and every OC that has one play during the game that makes you think WTF? WHile I'm not all that crazy about Schotty he is far from our biggest problem. Sure if Edwards throws an INT we are killing Schotty, same way if JCo is wide open and he throws a td we would be praising him. Schotty called a pretty good game today, as he did last week and again the O was not the reason we lost today, just the opposite, they were the reason we had any chance of winning. The cycle is pretty amazing with Jets fans, it is the same with every new CS. First the blame falls on a coordinator, next is HC until they are all replaced and the cycle starts over. I could have told you before the season that Schotty would get the blame if things didn't work out for the Jets this season.
the problem is he won't do what his HC wants from the get go. Ground and pound isn't WR option on 1st and 10. Overall the gameplan isn't terrible, but its those plays that give me no reason to like him anymore. Its 1st and 10 at midfield and they are down by 5. Why get cute? Its beyond frustrating.
We are the #1 rushing offense in the league and very much a ground and pound offense. That doesn't mean we can't take shots down the field , the first play of the game was a great call but terrible execution by the QB. I'm not going to defend him for the one playcall because I did not like it but it was one playcall and overall the gameplan was good again and the offense did a good enough job to win again. Like him or not, Schotty is far from one of the biggest reason we are 4-5 rather than 6-3 or something.
Like Vision said, you're judging Schotty's play-calling on one gadget play? That makes absolutely no sense. We've been running a very run-oriented attack, and it shows because we're number one in rushing. And I don't know if you watch other NFL games, but almost every team in the league runs a few trick plays every game. Schotty throws in 3-4 trick plays into the gameplan and all of a sudden he's a horrible coach? Btw, Cotchery was open on the WR pass and Edwards could have run it himself for 8-10 yards. It is beyond ridiculous that there are calls of firing Schotty when he's been calling decent games (save for Buffalo). If you look around the league, the best teams have consistent coaching staffs that build winning programs. Bellichick in NE, Dungy and his crew in Indy until this year, Cowher in Pittsburg until a few years ago, Coughlin in NY, Reid in Philly, etc. Patience is what we need with this team, and unfortunately NY fans are a bunch of bitches. That's why we have new coaches every 3-4 years. That's why the Yankees need to outspend every team by $100 million just to win (I'm a Yankee fan btw). That's why Isiah Thomas brought in a bunch of overpriced players into NY to ruin the Knicks. That's why there are so many Cowboy fans in NY. That's why there are so many Lakers fans in NY. I know for some it's been 40 years of waiting (because of my age I've only been a Jet fan for 9 years), but patience is what it's going to take to win the big one. Like Vision noted, it's pretty remarkable that Jet fans follow the same blame-game cycle with every new coaching staff. Schotty's gone this year. Next year Pettine's gone. Then Rex leaves the year after, and we need to rebuild all over again with players that match a different scheme. It just keeps going. Time to get some sleep before work
The Jets are also the top team in rushing attempts which usually nets a winning season. But my gripe is more time and place than it is stats. The players are good. That offense has the potential to be scary good when Sanchez gets more experience. He gets cute at the wrong times. 1st and 10 in the philosophy that has been preached by Ryan is not where these plays should happen. The offensive Coordinator has to learn when to call these plays, not how many times he uses them.
I was just getting comfortable with scapegoating Mangini for last year. I think we probably should fire Shotty and if that doesn't work maybe it's time to bring in a GM who knows Football instead of accounting.
Ryan and Pettine, at least I think, will be here for a while. I'd like 6 years out of a coach under the Johnson ownership. The usual cycle is 3 seasons like you pointed out. I'm not asking to blow up the offense and change the language and give Sanchez a new offense to learn which kills his growth. I'm asking to hand the decision making over to two position coaches that have had success in this league and a lot more than the young pissant controlling the whole offense. Callahan and/or Cavanaugh understand time and place in calling an offense. They can keep the language the same. I just don't want the current offensive coordinator having final say.
I'm not really going to disagree with this as there are many times throughout the games where I think WTF in relation to a playcall. I do think though that if I watched any game as involved as I watch the Jets games I would think this way as well. I'm not all that crazy about Schotty either way but I do feel like the overall gameplans on O have been pretty solid throughout the year and the O is progressing as the season goes on, whereas the D is regressing. I'm just sick of this cycle of blame then change that Jets fans and the organization have been on this decade. Whether we like all the playcalls or not Schotty does not deserve the blame for this year, he would be pretty far down on the list at least.
Tanny's draft and cap management will allow him to keep his job for one last coaching change. Not to mention Woody Johnson loves Tanny, so it would be interesting to see what happens. Maybe another Bradway move where Tanny goes back to his strength. I'd like to see Joey Clinkscales as manager if the shit hits the fan with Tanny. But thats a conversation that is not even close to happening yet. I think if you're part of the Mangini braintrust on the field, you should be let go. Those 3 had no fucking idea how to take a team with all that talent and keep them winning consistently.... fuck, neither does this CS.
Don't be shocked when we get rid of Shotty that he ends up the Miami OC and comes back to kill us for years.
It's pretty obvious that Jets fans are just desperate for a scapegoat (as usual) and Schottenheimer is just the most convenient candidate. That frequently puts me in the position of defending him, even though I'm pretty ambivalent about the job he's doing. That said, the fact that people are actually suggesting replacing him with Charlie Weis makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit. How have people not figured this out yet? The Patriots success is all about Belicheck; all of his assistants fail to coach half as well without him. Weis is an arrogant jackass who would just cause dissention while simultaneously setting back Sanchez's development by making him learn an entirely new offensive system in his second year in the pros. This would be a horrible, horrible idea. If Schottenheimer gets fired (which, by the way, he won't be) then he'd have to be replaced by an internal candidate.
