Not accurate, sombodys logic is off. Bellechik was going to start Brady and soon. Brady went from number 4 on depth to number 2 after one season and was right on Bledsoe's heels. It would been Bradys for sure after that season if not during. The injury just speed it up half a season. It was not luck, it was happening anyway. He blew everyone away in practice and was confident as hell, fierce as a mad dog. Sanchez sucks and is weak. I just added this sentence because it needs to be in every freaking post forever. Rex is a loser, and loves being one.
Its hard to put the blame on Mark when we have already have won with him. The guys he had in 2010 was enough to succeed. You dont see the Ravens stripping Joe Flacco of Boldin, Rice, and Torrey Smith. Because Sanchez has lost L.T., Edwards, and Holmes all for different reasons. If you took Boldin, Rice, and Smith from Flacco im sure he would crash just as hard as Mark has. Its hard to compare Mark to guys like Matt Ryan and Flacco, hell even Dalton. Sanchez has the most depleted WR and RB group in the entire NFL while these other young QBs are loaded at WR and RB.. When Mark had a decent amount of talent he was able to win. Find him a RB and real WR and he will do fine.....
And TBH, I dont even believe the WR issue is that big of a deal. I think it ultimately has come down to the lack of a good RB. Its put to much pressure Mark. He will never be Tom Brady but at the same time he doesnt have to be. What we did in 09 and 10 was enough to win games. We should have never tried to fix something that was never broken. Bottom line, we need to find Mark a RB and ALOT of problems will be fixed.
not the point. the argument is that because he isn't starting it reflects that he isn't good enough to start. the application to the Brady situation is the same. because Belichik wasn't considering starting Brady that season, it must mean that he wasn't good enough to start that season. thus Belichik, if your scenario is true, is that Brady still wasn't good enough that season, with the qualifier that Belichik believed he would be good enough the following season. history has shown that not to be the case, so not starting or being considered to start does not reflect an ability to do so, and that was the sole dynamics of the argument being disputed.
that value isn't absolute and is entirely dependent on another team wanting to trade up. absent of that, the picks have no difference in value.
I don't give too much credit to this, the NFL does. There are 2 guys starting in the NFL right now who were taken after the 3rd round or acquired as undrafted free agents: Tom Brady and Tony Romo. There are 3 more guys starting who were drafted after the 4th pick of the 2nd round: Chad Henne, Russell Wilson and Matt Schaub. The NFL doesn't believe in fairy tales.
BN, I often agree with you, and don't always agree with JB, but this time I think you are wrong. First of all, context is important. That context includes that Sanchez has been awful and the Jets are as a practical matter finished this year. Add to that that I think the Jets need to look elsewhere than Sanchez, and Tebow, for next year's starting Qb, regardless of Sanchez's contract. Context also includes that Ryan continues to play vets even who play badly. He needs to send a message, and how better to do it than give McElroy a shot? Continuing to play Sanchez sends the opposite message, that gross suckiness will not cause you to lose your job, even reps in practice (I will return to this). In this context, the fact that GM is third string is not the same as, say, it would on Opening Day to be sure. But the part about next year means the Jets have a Qb on the roster who it would pay to see what he could do. You don't know GM isn't any good. He looked good in pre-season. He looked good in college. He has not looked bad, yet, in a real NFL game. As for Ryan, I don't trust his judgment in assessing Qb's - see his unending support for one of the two or three worst Qb's who have played this year, continuing a regression that goes back to last season. And if Ryan thinks GM is so bad, why is he even on the roster? Maybe Ryan is just not handling the situation that well. What he says and does is hardly proof to me that he is doing the best he can as HC. McElroy might well play worse than Sanchez. But all he has to do to play better is not turn the ball over so much. That doesn't seem too high a standard. I have seen McElroy play. He makes good decisions. He takes off now and then, but imo only when the pocket is collapsing and there's an opening to pick up yards. He throws with decent accuracy. And he does not turn the ball over.
All those guys are better than Sanchez. What is the downside to seeing what McElroy can do? If he sucks, so be it. Then the Jets will know they need three new Qb's next year, not just two. The reality is in the next week or two, the Jets will be out of the playoffs. In the meantime there is no harm in giving McElroy some first team reps in practice. Get him ready. And if the Jets are out of it, put him in there and see what he's got. IMo, no downside.
The downside to seeing what McElroy is is that he's bad. Period. If he wasn't bad there is no way the Jets go sign Drew Stanton in free agency this year. There's probably no way they trade for Tim Tebow. That McElroy hasn't even dressed for most games this year tells you that he's bad. QB's who aren't bad get to put on the uniform on Sunday. The GM who drafted McElroy badly needs a win right now. He needs something that he did to work out. You think he wouldn't be pushing for McElroy to start if he thought that would reflect well on him?
One of the things that is keeping Sanchez in there through a miserable season is that he's an effective scapegoat for a lot of other issues also. As soon as he comes out things begin to come into focus that nobody on the Jets management staff want to get focused on right now. Like how the right side of the offensive line is a porous disaster area that leaks constantly. Like how the left side of the line has a huge gap at the end of it as the LT has to cheat inside to cover for the LG (again.) Like how none of the receivers can get separation early in the play, leaving the QB throwing fewer short safe passes than anybody else in the league. Do the Jets really want to put a weak arm in there to make all of that stand out in clear relief when they could instead just leave the guy out there who is responsible for 99% of what's wrong with the Jets offense in the view of many fans?
The value is also based on the fact that a higher pick has a better chance of becoming an impact player vs. a lower pick. Sure the draft is always a crap shoot and a high pick can turn into a bust (there have been plenty), but in general the better the pick the better chance for an impact player.
that isn't true at all. the only thing a higher draft pick provides is your choice between several players, not that the player you pick is better than the player you do not.
They got Tebow to be Brad Smith's replacement in the wildcat, no more, no less, unless personal protector on the punt team is more. Teams don't dress 3 QB's. Amazed you don't know that. McElroy is the designated emergency QB, is he not? He dresses but is not on the active roster. The GM doesn't need a 7th round QB to work out, he needs the 5th overall pick he traded up for to work out... so, McElroy has no chance of starting, even if he WERE a good QB, which we really don't know right now. As BigB said, what is there to lose? I'll tell you what... it's Tanny's job, that is what there is to lose. They start McElroy and he plays "unhorribly" (unlike Sanchez) , you KNOW that is the last nail in Tannenbaum's coffin. The LAST thing Tannenbaum wants to see is McElroy play, because if he outplays Sanchez, and it's hard to imagine he won't, it makes Tannenbaum look like the idiot he is. THAT is why McElroy has no chance of playing, not because he "might" suck worse than Sanchez, but because if he plays well, it exposes Ryan and Tannenbaum for the idiots that they are.
Half of McElroy's pictures on his Wikipedia page are from high school. Is that an indictment of his ability?
Having that choice to pick a higher rated player gives you a higher opportunity to get a better player. Of course there's always a chance that the player will be a bust or that a player picked after that player will be better. That can be said for any sport. However, having a top 5 pick will give you a better chance to have a top end player than having the 16th pick every time.
