I think he's being a little hard on Steve Smith in his USC skill player evaluation. Smith was a rookie during the SB run and still had to play behind Burress and Toomer (when they were healthy) last year. Give him a year as a starter to determine if he's an impact player. Hell, even if the Giants only get a solid #2 WR out of that pick, it's pretty good for the second round.
Let me get this straight... Chad Pennington's intangibles plus a stronger arm?... That sounds like a Pro Bowler plus to me.
pennington plus = normal QB arm strength.... this is a non story. the kid has to sit, he can't start week 1
Not only the stronger arm but much much better mobility. Pennington moves like he has cement blocks on his feet.
The only one who keeps bringing up Sanchez's arm strength is Cimini, so I'm not too concerned considering the source.
Also consider that when the Giants were flirting with getting Edwards from the Browns, one of the players they wanted was Steve Smith and the Giants basically said "no". The Giants have shown a pretty good track record in aquiring talent, so I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt over a Jets' beat writer.
Pennington was when healthy a deadly NFL QB. His accuracy and touch on passes as well as his cerebral approach and fake-the-cameras-insane play action brought this franchise three playoff births, and a division title. That's Chad's ceiling however. In the playoffs it usually takes getting past two good to elite-caliber defenses, and Chad just gets physically outmatched, rushed to the point to where his arm just isn't good enough to make the throws necessary to win. You can win in spite of him. The Jets should have won in-spite of him against Pittsburgh as his performance was pretty shitty. He isn't a guy that can carry a team or even cleanly contribute to playoff victories when matched against really good defensive teams. Pre-injuries when he had a little more zip, who knows what would've happened. Point is if your giving me a Quarterback with Chad's intangibles, knowledge of the game, touch and accuracy along with a BETTER arm, then we're getting a franchise player. Someone that can lead this franchise to places it hasn't been. Who was satisfied with going to the playoffs and not getting past the divisional round? Everyone should be. It's about Super Bowls. All those Miami teams that Marino didn't get to the Super Bowl don't mean shit. I love this move. First of all I had been in total agreement with others on this board like Mr.Electric that thought he was the best player in the draft. If he came out next year he'd be the number 1 overall pick. But even if you disagree with me on that point, the cost it took to do business with Cleveland made it so that even if Rex and Tanny weren't COMPLETELY enamored with getting him, they better have exhausted every resource possible to explain to everyone why they DIDN'T move up. Three JAG's. Really 1 pick we're giving up. It was a steal of a trade.
The big question is: can he keep his head when the Jets are matched up against a quick, tough defense in the playoffs and are somewhat overmatched by the overall talent on the other side of the field? Chad wasn't able to man up in those situations most of the time and had some of his worst performances as a Jet in the post-season as the Jets bowed out. There are a few exceptions, like the Patriots in 2006, but mostly Chad collapsed when he had people in his face all day long and things weren't going right. If Sanchez can just maintain his composure and not become one of the problems in those games then the Jets have made out very well with their new franchise QB.
what really concerns me (and only concern) is Sanchez durability because I could not stand how often Pennington got hurt when we had him
he's played hurt, he's a tough kid. Pennington's injuries were unfortunate. When the rotator cuff goes - it goes.
Pennington with a significantly better arm, much more mobility, media savvy (no scolding reporters, I guess), no twice repaired shoulder, and a hot girlfriend to boot.
Resign Chad as a backup!!! Get him in here to work with the 6 shooter.... 67% comp. 19TD's 7int's and 3600yds.... we'd take that in a heartbeat!
Slightly better arm? I hear Rex Ryan say today on Kay's show when they tried out Sanchez in California he threw the ball 68 yards on the fly with the wind in his face (though Ryan said it wasn't anything like Meadowlands wind).
Yup, heard it also. He sounded giddy. He also said that with the players we aquired he was going to coach the offense at the rookie camp.... lol
He seemed really mature in interviews. Capable of leading a team, and not dwelling on the limelight and pressure. If he plays as smart as Chad but a better athlete, I will be extremely happy.
that means if he competed in the skills competition on ESPN he would have placed 2nd behind Cantwell...that's a hell of an arm. And that was with wind in his face. As long as he can throw the 10 yard out route on a rope in December he's fine.
