For the record, if the Jets fail to make the playoffs, I would have no problem with Schotty leaving. I don't think it would help things one bit, but it might help clarify in everyone's mind what other changes on O must be made. Unless of course the Jets really could bring in an upgrade at OC. I just don't know who that would be, realistically.
This is something I've been thinking about, but you guys state it very well. I think it's very telling...... Watching the game with my dad the other night, I kept yelling about how stupid the plays are (ones we've repeatedly seen). He would say "he has no time, they have to throw short passes" ..... "Dad, short passes, yes....but grouping all these guys together or kriss-krossing them, bunching up defenders in the process is a clusterphuck in the making. No wonder this kid throws interceptions!" The stats stated by DirtySanchez shows that it may not just be a Sanchez problem (although he definitely needs to improve) and that's just watching the TV (haven't been able to see him play in person yet... where you can see the whole field / plays develop) :shit:
Yeah, absolutely. He was considered a good coach prior to Super Bowl 37 and then everything went haywire. He didn't change the play calls and Gruden knew them, then he went to Nebraska and acted like an asshole and pissed everyone off and now he's with the Jets. If the offense continues to perform poorly, the options are as follows- *fire Schottenheimer during the season and promote Callahan or Cavanaugh to OC *let Schottenheimer continue to blow and make a decision in the offseason. Rex Ryan may soon blow a gasket over Schottenheimer and he may make a change to make a change.
Didn't they get into a locker room shouting match last season? Schotty has to be on a the hot seat. Callahan will most likely be the one that gets promoted to OC, especially if Ryan wants to go back to a run heavy offense.
agree on schott. there are guys available out there. dennis green, steve mariuchi, gruden. whether woody or rex will pull the trigger is the question. funny how the ravens brought in gerode and the tackle from minny when their o-line had issues, but tanny did nothing? don't overlook the guy who's job it is to supply players to the coaching staff!
Yeah, b-b-b-but Big Blocker implied that Callahan is a piece of shit and essentially wrote that anybody who thinks Callahan could take over for Schottenheimer is an idiot and totally out of touch with reality.
If the Jets do end up letting Schotty go, then I think we should ask Tom Moore to be our new OC. Idk if he would be up for the job, but that would be awesome!! I think if we do let Schotty go at this point, it would do more bad than good for our offense. If we do fire him, we should do it after the season so the players can get alot of time with a new OC.
I don't like Bill Callahan! He suck at head coaching, but good at running a west coast offense too much!
There are plenty of young WR coaches, RB coaches, QB coaches, college assistants, etc. who could be brought in for interviews after the season. The Jets don't have to hire a "name" coordinator.
Well, it could get worse, but the offense is already pretty bad, so... ____ The offense would not be overhauled if Schottenheimer were fired during the season because the plays were designed in the offseason. The players could not possibly learn an entire new system during the season. The only real thing that could change would be the play calling. A new coordinator could emphasize certain plays and entirely scrap other plays. Also, less predictability and better in-game adjustments could be brought to the mix. Schottenheimer is a very predictable play-caller. Maybe a guy like Callahan would be more unpredictable.
Not to quibble, but what happened between SB 37 and Nebraska concerned me even more. His next year as HC after the SB loss was worst of all in terms of inspring confidence in Callahan as an OC. I think Gruden did a great job in Oakland with a flawed but talented Qb. How much credit to the OC during that run? It wasn't only the play calls Gruden knew. It was what happened to a SB team the following year, with Gruden gone and Callahan in charge. They sucked, and he lost control of the team, and found himself out of hte league. Ftr that's why imo going from Schotty to Callahan is the proverbial frying pan into the fire move. Don't do it. Add in that the OL is the worst unit on the team, Hunter was Callahan's choice to replace Woody, and this latest info from Jenks that no one else on the OL knows the calls beside Mangold and Turner, and Callahan's lucky they don't fire him, let alone promote him.
Yeah but nobody is asking him to be the Head Coach here.. just perhaps the interim Offensive Coordinator and then they can re-evaluate after the season. You can't really give all the credit to Gruden with Oakland, because his history after with quarterbacks was pretty awful. There's a good chance Callahan had a lot to do with those Raiders offenses. Rich Gannon was not exactly a superstar before his Raiders tenure, and Callahan had a part in turning him into a league MVP. If I'm not mistaken, they also had the #1 run game in the NFL at least one of those seasons. He clearly has a much bigger track record of success than Shotty.
If Shotty's gameplans and play calling are as bad and predictable as everyone seems to think, isn't that a hit on Rex also? As the head coach and resident defensive genius, isn't he at least involved with how Shotty is planning to attack the next opponent? If Rex looks at the gameplan or notices during the game that the Jets are making it easy on the defense, shouldn't he say something then, rather than be pissed about it after the fact? Parcells took over the playcalling from Weiss and other OC's often when he didn't like the way they were calling games. Just as he'd get on Belichik if he didn't like what the defense is doing. The buck stops with him really.
I wouldn't expect Ryan to be in the offensive planning in the normal course of events. I do expect that he'll be making sure that his edict on ground and pound is enforced though. One of the things that the Jets should do at some point, although probably not in season, is a tiger attack on both units by the opposing coaching staff. Ryan and Pettine should sit down and look at what the Jet's offensive staff is doing and figure out how they'd dismantle it. I think that process would really open up Ryan's eyes as to exactly how weak the Jet's offensive scheme is. Similarly if Schotty and Cavanaugh had to figure out how to beat the Jets defense it might open their eyes as to how hard it is to try to run an overly complex scheme against an attacking defense that isn't going to let you read them well and that will make quick adjustments on the line of scrimmage as the play clock winds down. One of the things the Jets are least effective at doing at this point is using the play clock effectively. They spend way too much time in a set position at the line of scrimmage as the clock winds down. We saw two false start penalties for exactly this reason last week because the line was more inexperienced than usual and Sanchez was more rattled. the Jets should be snapping the ball with 7 to 10 seconds left on the play clock fairly often to keep the defense from timing the snap and to prevent them from rushing up to blitz when there is no time left to make adjustments.
You'd think so. As some of us have been saying for a while. But let's go beyond that. Rex should be able to, in practice, say "Shit Schotty! That play sucks ass! Granted, we knew it was coming, but damn it, I could blindfold Westhoff and send him in to defend that play solo!" Instead, he allows whatever plays are being practiced to be used in games. Why? That's a problem with Rex, but people don't like to talk poorly about Rex. Instead, people call for Callahan to get the job. This despite his getting canned from the Raiders after his QB directly called him out publicly (which Schotty's has yet to truly do) and then from Nebraska. He has also been directly responsible for the Jets choosing to dump Woody and making Hunter the starter. Yet, he deserves a promotion? I wish I worked for some of the people on this board. Ignoring all of the above, what was Moore brought in for? Specifically to observe and analyze the offense. Well, wtf is he doing then? Is he just ignoring obvious playcalling problems? Where are his adjustments and advice? Does anyone have any answers for the above questions? Or must we continually endure "Fire Schitty!" calls with no real answers on how that will fix anything? (And I'm not saying someone else won't fix it, but who, and why will they do so?)
The who is an unknown but the why is likely that they'll tailor the offense to the personnel's strengths instead of trying to get the personnel to fit in a system they are not optimal for. Schotty's investment in his system, which he clearly feels is the best available, is a detrimental factor for the Jets right now because it is clear to everybody but Schotty that Mark Sanchez can't run the system effectively against a strong defense. The Jets scored 9 points last year against the Ravens and got shutout by the Packers. They got shut down in the AFC Championship game by the Steelers. Plainly put, their system doesn't work well in the face of a lot of defensive pressure. Just as the system didn't work well in that situation when Chad was QB. The Jet's offensive system right now requires a compliant defense in order to function well. It doesn't create any type of challenge for a physical attacking defense at all.
