Again, he is not playing the typical pass rush position. ILB is not the pass rush position, OLB is.

Oh. Well that explains his abundance of pass deflections and picks. *sarcasm off*

Well, in that case, we do have to agree to disagree.

    Good debate, though.

Whatever, I guess he sucks since you say so.

Do you root for these guys to suck? No one is expecting Scott to be LT here. But he is a definite upgrade from Barton. So what if he talks and there is hype. This D has no vocal leader, if he is the guy so be it.

He was in on 82 tackles, playing next to HOF Ray Lewis, that ain't too bad.

You mention his sack numbers, but one thing to keep in mind is Ray Lewis' skills are diminishing. As he was getting (and obviously still is) older, Scott took on a lot more responsibility covering backs and tight ends. Hence, he was pass rushing a lot less and the defense never really suffered as a result.

I'm not worried about Bart Scott fitting in here and helping our defense out tremendously.

I agree somewhat with the sentiment that hype and talk is cheap. But the Jets have no real vocal leader on D. Sometimes the effect a new player has on a D is more than his stats on another team. He is not only an upgrade at ILB, he will be a leader, and help to teach Ryan's system. Has anyone even taken note how Ryan has taken steps to put at least one of his former players at every level of the D? Douglas at DE, Scott at LB, and Leohnard in the defensive backfield.

wow, god forbid someone suggest Bart Scott isn't a first ballot hall of famer. Interviews in May don't mean shit.

Is it wrong to debate the point, though?

If there was reasoning instead of just saying "nope, his stats aren't great which means he's overrated".

Regardless, do you really think Rex Ryan would have told the NYJ brass that we need to get this guy at any cost if he didn't think he was gonna be a big time contributor? Say what you want about how he has no experience as a head coach but the man knows defense.

That was the best article of the off season. Finally, something different, specific and with new information. There is nothing that can turn a home crowd on like a top 5 defense. Pressure football rocks the house, ask us fans in the early 80's with the sack exchange. Its so damm exciting to kick teams asses in at home. And finally a vocal leader on defense, last one we had was Cox and he was past his prime. Talk is cheap, but it sure sounds good in May

lol I'm not sure if you are intentionally not reading or if you physically can't read. I didn't just say that it was because of stats. but stats are certainly an indicator of whether a player is productive or not.

I already said things like "i watch the games" and "he piles on tackles that aren't his"

He can cover. Lack of a LBer who could cover a man in a wheelchair was the Jets biggest problem last year. The second biggest problem was only having one good CB and the third biggest was bizarre defensive play calling and schemes. I think all three of these problems have been fixed and the Jet defense will be top 5 in the league. I think Sanchez really lucked out with being drafted by the Jets, he barely needs to do anything to take this team to the playoffs and look like a golden boy.

Another Fantastic Article on the Defense
Day after day, meeting after meeting, practice after practice, coach Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine bombarded Jets players with film of the Ravens defense.

Players understood at first, but as the weeks turned into months, they began to resent the fact that Ryan and Pettine were always shoving clips down their collective throats of Ray Lewis' greatest hits.

"That was part of our master plan," Pettine said the other day with a sly grin while relaxing in his office at the Jets' Florham Park complex. "We wanted to (tick) them off a little bit until they got to the point where they wanted to look at their own stuff."

Last week, Ryan and Pettine felt the Jets had finally earned the right to watch their own highlight reel. As Ryan stood before his players preaching the virtues of his Ravens defenses yet again, he clicked on the video remote and up popped a recent Jets practice in which players were racing to the ball and causing defensive havoc.

"No disrespect to the Ravens and the time Rex and Pettine were there, but yeah, we got tired of watching the Ravens," said cornerback Darrelle Revis. "We wanted the focus to be on us, the New York Jets. Rex always says, 'Let's fly around like some Jets.'

"Once he put on that clip, and we were flying around, running to the ball and making plays, it was good for us to see we're doing the things the Ravens were, and we're progressing towards being a great defense."

In the four years Ryan served as Baltimore's defensive coordinator, the Ravens were among the league's most feared defenses, never finishing lower than sixth in the NFL in total defense. Last season, the unit was ranked second in total defense and forced an NFL-high 34 turnovers.

Pettine, who has worked side-by-side with Ryan on the Raven' defensive staff since 2002, has promised to deliver a Ravens-like defense to the Jets and says the installation of the defense is running smoothly and he has the talent.

    GETTING IT DOWN

Thus far, nearly 70 percent of the defense has been installed and Pettine hopes to reach the 85 percent mark by the end of the Jets' mandatory minicamp, which runs from June 9-11. He'll put on the finishing touches in August during training camp. Players are learning the complicated scheme via the greaseboard, video cut-ups, walk-throughs and practices.

During an Organized Team Activity practice session last Thursday in the fieldhouse at Florham Park, Pettine, who always wears his green and white Jets cap backward over his bald head, was leaping for joy and exchanging high-fives with players as his defense blitzed the offense into submission during a two-minute drill at the end of practice.

"The one thing that has impressed us is the accumulative intelligence of our group," Pettine said. "We have some sharp guys. That's a great marriage for our system because we can be so multiple, and we can keep adding stuff as long as they can handle it."

The defense is complex. It relies on the blitz and attacking scheme that has a 3-4 base alignment, but players are constantly moving and are interchangeable. It's not uncommon for a linebacker to cover a slot receiver while the nickel back blitzes or defensive ends drop into coverage. Pettine insists he's not trying to do the exact same things he did with the Ravens, rather he wants to match his scheme with his new players and create the same intimidating results.

In Baltimore, defensive players were absolutely giddy on Wednesdays in anticipation of Ryan and Pettine revealing the game plan for that week. The pair were known for devising creative schemes that seemed to feature a different player every week.

"We're having fun with it," said Revis. "There are going to be opportunities for us in the secondary to make plays. And the defensive line. They're not reading and reacting. They don't have three or four jobs to do on one play. They're just reacting and making plays."

    TESTING THE DEFENSE

Interestingly, Pettine said the many facets of the Jets offense, with its different shifts, pre-snap movement, unbalanced lines and misdirection plays, has helped the defense immensely.

"We're being tested by the offense," he said. "If you can draw it up, we're seeing it. I think that's great for our guys. Anytime you can speed up the thinking.

"There are a lot of guys who know the defense when you can sit them down, but when you're on the field and the play clock is running, you need guys who can think then."

Although the Jets don't have a premier pass-rusher -- some feel linebackers Calvin Pace (seven sacks) and Bryan Thomas (5 1/2) can be that but weren't unleashed last season -- Pettine said he's not concerned. The plan is to generate a pass rush with a variety of different schemes such as overloading one side and/or blitzing cornerbacks and safeties.

"A lot of times, it's trying to figure out who the offense has identified as potential pass- rushers and then bring guys outside of that count," said Pettine.

Linebacker Bart Scott, a former Raven, believes the Jets have the players to make the defense work. It's one of the reasons he signed with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, following Ryan and Pettine.

"Before we got here, you look at the Jets personnel, and they had tremendous athleticism," he said. "They just weren't asked to do certain things. It wasn't because they were incapable to doing them.

"Now that we're here, we can use everybody, and I think we'll discover the different talents that each guy may have."

there was a thread on here last year around the time we played new england saying how these are not the same old jets...... needless to say they ended up being the same old jets... thing is with those same old jets is that its usually a whole bunch of new and different guys doing new and different things.... and not winning :(

come and tell me about not the same old jets when we actually win something!
