How exactly is one "forced" to pay a mediocre player like he's a superstar? Don't do it. The market could start to get back to normal somewhat this offseason as there could be a overabundance of GOOD veteran QBs available and not nearly enough jobs available.
As of now, Sam hasn't played well enough to get overpaid. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Like this. Say we have the same 'over abundance' of QB's next year when JoeD starts talks with Sam. JoeD will still be in a tough spot and he'll still be forced to overpay Sam to stay a NY Jet. What else does he do? Let Sam walk to sign Brady for $10M less? Let Sam walk to sign Teddy B for $10M less? Or Jameis Winston? Or Tannybound? No. JoeD will be forced, even with an overabundance of QBs on the market, to overpay for Sam and Sam's next 5 years as a Jet, for better or worse. The only thing JoeD can do to bring out the 'FIRE JOE' banners would be to let Sam walk.
The biggest question is what type a guy is Darnold. Will he be like most and want top dollar or will he be like Brady etc and take a lower price deal to help build the team for consistency. We don't know how any of this will turn out until it happens. He could play outst6 and still take a lower deal or play like he has and want a huge deal. Unfortunately we have to wait and see.
U R forgetting that SD held out until the NYJs amended the options on his original contract. I think it had something to do with the option year
There are always thing to hash out on a contract. From both sides. This doesn't tell us the future. As I already stated it can go either way. We can only wait and see.
Again, IMO, short of Sam having a bust year while playing behind a better supporting cast, the negotiations to keep Sam will be in full force. If Sam proves to the leadership he is the long term guy with a solid season and significant improvements over last year JD will sign SD to a big salary that is comparable with top market values. If there is serious doubts in JD and AG's mind he is the guy, then we are screwed on arrival, because none of the guys available will be in the realm of FQB we so desperatly want.
Brady took less was because the overall situation in New England with Beli was a goldmine. The money Brady gave up was a fantastic investment that paid off over and over again in priceless glory. If Gase is about to take the helm as the best coach in football, then taking less will be the best thing for Sam too. But um... yeah.
I agree there is a lot to it. But him taking less helped bring other talent which in turn led to multiple championships. Other players could think the same. Not saying it will happen. That's on the player.
Gee, what a swell altruistic guy that Brady taking less money and taking one for the team. Of course, knowing that the league rigged the past two decades for the Pats to win those Championships didn't exactly make his decision all that difficult. Assuming, of course, he even had a choice in the matter...wink, wink.
Brady got money under the table in the form of contracts his company had with the Pats. His wife earned $50M+ a year for long parts of his tenure with the Pats. His coach was ruthless with the cap, cut corners on the rules where he could, outright cheated at other times and dominated the competition committee for years despite all of the aforementioned. Like everything else Brady there are fairy tales involved in the situation that will never apply anywhere else if the NFL survives for another 1000 seasons.
Since I am not paying it, I don't give a hoot about Donald's current or future contract. However, if he is looking for that big pay day, he will need to stop making the amateur mistakes he has made over his first two seasons. As with most QBs, minimizing mistakes are key for him to becoming a top QB in the NFL.
Joe Douglas didn't draft Darnold. It's talent evaluation. He has to properly evaluate Darnold go from there. He can do that right now. He can be proactive so that the situation you described doesn't occur and he makes sure the team has options. He can/should IMO sign one of these young veteran QBs that could be available this offseason OR IF HE has evaluated Darnold already and decided he is not the long term answer make a move in this draft for a QB a Tua or someone else. ChampionJets1969 has asked a legitimate question, you have described a very legitimate situation that could happen. All options should be on the table I think.
I doubt Sam will 'sign for less to help the team'. Sam is a rookie, and his agent will do ALL the talking. Most skill players are looking to sign a BIG contract to become the highest paid (at the time). Sam will be no different. IF Sam had already made $100M, won several rings, and the team was on the verge of winning several more, then MAYBE he sings for a bit less.
At this rate he isn't getting a monster contract for this first deal, but he absolutely deserves a second contract IMO. He can get that monster extension or deal when he turns 27 or 28 and has really taken that next step. Obviously this changes if he absolutely balls out this year + next year. Typing that made me extremely happy. 27 or 28 years old and just getting his SECOND contract. Wow.
It won't work that way. He's going to want a new contract after this season. JD can drag it out, but it never works well when GMs go that route. We drafted Sam at 21 yrs of age. By the time he's 25/6, he'll be a multi millionaire many times over. And he doesn't have to take that huge next step to get it either. As long as he's the face/future of the team, he has JD over a barrel, and he's getting paid. And sooner rather than latter. I think anyway. Edit: I think even now JD is counting pennies looking ahead. JD has to come up with $40M+ of cap (per year) to pay Sam. Saving $4m paying the new WR $8M versus paying Robbie $12M all goes in the 'Sam Bank'. The $17m/yr he'd save by trading Jamal goes in the 'Sam Bank'. JD avoided any big $ FA signings and wrote a bunch of 1yr contracts to give himself max flexibility to re-up Sam. I think!
