I think as much as we feel sorry for sam, hes to blame too. Some of his decisions are just head scratching. No matter how much Gase has failed this team, that doesnt excuse Darnold from his play. Problem is, hes exactly what he was at USC. His accuracy is a MAJOR issue that a lot of people ignore.

Ill submit this video and you tell me he has improved.

He's a frustrating player because he can make the spectacular throw like he did to Berrios falling away with a flick of the wrist in garbage time vs. the 49ers but he can't make the simple throw.

And now it's to the point where he's pressing so bad that he looked like he was trying to win three games with one throw versus the Colts.

My one issue with fans wanting Lawrence is they don't realize it would be so much better to have Sam succeed, than it would be to draft a new QB. If Sam is good enough (and I think he still can be), then you take your Top 10 pick and use it on a different position. Maybe O-line, maybe WR, maybe CB, maybe pass rusher, and then take your second 1st Round pick and do the same. Add some players in Free Agency, get Mosley back, probably have a new Head Coach, and you have a solid team going into 2021. Probably can add 5-7 impact players in just one off-season. You have a 24 year old vet going into year 4 at QB.

On the other hand, if the team fails Sam and moves on, you use that pick on Lawrence. Now you have 1 first round pick and a rookie QB to start all over again. Lawrence would be in a much better situation that Sam was in 2018, but still.

Either way, the future for the Jets is still bright despite this horrendous situation they are in right now. I just think it will move faster if Sam succeeds.

It comes down to where we pick and what Douglas and the new HC think. If we pick 1st, it'll be difficult to pass on a prospect as good as Lawrence. Don't forget that Joe isn't the one who drafted Sam, so he could view Sam as needing a change of scenery and start over with a QB on a rookie contract who can be properly nurtured.

I don't agree that it would be better for Sam to succeed at this point. That may have been true a year ago but the clock is ticking on Sam's rookie contract. He will become significantly more expensive in the very near future, making it more difficult to add talent around him. The best possible outcome at this point is the #1 pick followed by Trevor performing well early.

Sam is not the problem here

The Jets WRs are the biggest problem here

    Gase is a close 2nd

    The leaky OL is 3rd

Give Darnold a #1 WR and you can tack on an extra 75 yards every game and fewer picks

Give Darnold a real OC and he will be more consistent week to week

Douglas obviously balled out with Becton... at least so far... so the OL is actually being addressed, unlike the WR and OC problems

Sam is not the only problem but he is very clearly a problem. He's been near league worst in turnovers every season and has also had a below average completion % and YPG/YPA.

If you look at Sam's biggest weakness, making bad decisions on throws, that's not something that coaches or WR's would easily fix. Sam often throws into double/triple coverage. He just makes poor choices. Those sorts of mistakes are solely his fault and it's been killing us.

    nobody is open

sam is forced to force throws

he isn’t manning or rodgers and can’t elevate a shitty cast of WRs

but if you surround him with weapons, he can excel

why does he have a 4-game stretch every season where he looks like a Top 5 QB if he sucks so badly?

That happens very rarely. When you compile the names, the losers are often omitted.

Think about Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Brady Quinn, Jimmy Clausen, Josh Freeman, etc. Some of them didn't even get a second chance.

Think about the high picks such as Jameis Winston, Sam Bradford and Marcus Mariota whom are now backups. What separates Sam? For what it's worth, I don't think Jameis is done as a starter either.

But quarterbacks don't really just go on to secondary success like Brees did or Alex Smith.

give him and o-line and some people to throw to and that changes. by every metric when sam isn't under pressure he's a top 10 QB in the NFL. even with shit for WRs. the problem is the jets allow too much pressure. we need to fix the right side of the o-line and get him weapons which can be done with our cap room plus 5 picks in the top 3 rounds and the ability to trade down for more. if we could slide down a few spots and get an extra 2nd in this years draft and next years draft that would be amazing. we would have 6 picks in the top 3 rounds for 2021 and 5 for 2022.

When you have very little time to drop back, assess the situation, and then throw, like Same has had for every game he's played for the Jets, you're going to make hasty and bad decisions. What is so hard to understand about that? And even now, when his protection holds up, he's "seeing ghosts", not trusting that he has the time to make all his reads. It's quite possible that he's ruined, thank you NY Jets. But before I say that for certain, I want to see him play for a coach that designs the offense to his (and the rest of the offense) strength. From the latest rumors though, it doesn't appear as we'll get to see this. CJ is in love with Gase the "genius".It's a classic case of cognitive dissonance: denying reality because it doesn't mesh with what you believe in your heart.

He's had time to throw this year though. The receivers suck but the line has been fine and his clock is going off too early in his head this year unfortunately.

If nobody is open you do not throw the ball or you throw it away. Any way you slice it it's a poor decision by Sam. He did the same thing at USC when he was surrounded by tons of talent.

Turnovers are the worst single thing you can do in football. Throwing the ball away and having to punt is a FAR better outcome than throwing an interception.

MOST of the time. As I pointed out though, after 2 seasons of being under siege, he's developed bad habits. Who wouldn't? He may be ruined, or at least requiring a move to a team that has a solid OL that he can regain his confidence behind. But as I said, I'd like to see him play under someone other than Gase before I toss him on the scrap heap.

He didn't "develop" any of his habits. He did the exact same things at USC. The big concern for Sam going into the draft was his problem with committing dumb turnovers. It doesn't get easier to avoid turnovers in the NFL than it was in college.

You're right, but Darnold is trying to make something happen. He's seeing play after play that Gase calls for fail, and as a pro with a desire to win, he's going to try and overcome that and he winds up forcing things.

The majority of blame for Darnold's struggles and failures is Adam Gase (and before him Bowles), with a large contribution by the shitty talent around him. I really don't think ANY QB could succeed in those circumstances.

You want to blame Gase for the 49ers. Yeah I'm with you. Awful game plan and shitty game management.

You wanna blame him for the Bills game? I guess I can rock with it. We had two drops and two blatant overthrows and a fumble during our opportunity to get the game close. But OK we can blame him.

You can't blame him for the Colts game. The playcalling and game plan was fine. We were moving the ball. Sam made three atrocious throws that tossed us out of the game. If he makes zero of them it's 20-10 in a worst case scenario and we have a fighting shot in the 4th quarter.

If you want to discount the impact of the poor coaching and talent on his development, I don't think we can agree.

So you're analyzing these three games, and dismissing the effect of the previous two seasons on him? Further, you don't account for the cumulative effects of those poor game plans and play calling in the previous games?

Okay, have it your way. Sam sucks and is irredeemable. If only we had a good QB, then Gase's offense would hum!

I don't think anyone said anything close to that. But when a player has a bad game like the Colts game, it's OK to say the player had an awful game. Everything isn't always the coaches fault or within the coaches control.

Him throwing that ball to the wrong spot on that deep Hogan sideline out is automatically the coaches fault? He knew he fucked up.

Sam not putting air under the ball to Cager in the end zone on a stop corner is the coaches fault?
