How is separation determined? Separation of the receiver the QB actually targets? The problem with Fields is that despite his arm talent and mobility, he can't read a defense. It's also hard to believe Russell Wilson's receivers were getting that much more separation when they were on the same team. So if separation is calculated how I think it is, what it's saying is Fields throws to the wrong read.
I wouldn't be totally opposed to this. I think Darnold's success was largely system-specific so if you get the right coaching he can continue being a solid QB. If you just dropped him in a Nate Hackett or some other mediocre system he would probably be awful
For sure. Darnold needs the Shanahan/Kubiak system. the Jets were smart enough to pair him with a Shanahan disciple in LaFleur but we never got to see that pairing cause Joe Douglas stupidly traded him away and opted for the byu kid instead. -- Darnold on a reasonable 3-year deal, McCown his best friend as OC, send Rodgers packing. Then you pound the zone running game with Breece Hall (like he was born to run) and play action off of it to Garrett Wilson. Let the HC figure out the defense and we are in business
Fair point, but even Russ is bottom 5. It's not like all of the sudden he is middle of the pack. It's within margin of error. Plus Russ get Big Mike as well, who doesn't look like he was awesome there, but still contributed a bit. Fields is still just 25. And he gives dual threat element too. It's not like we are choosing between Fields, Mahomes, Burrow, etc... It's Fields, Winston, Dalton, maybe Daniel Jones. Pickings are slim. I would sign up for Fields, Taylor, and healthy Travis QB room right now. We might not even be able to get him in free agency. And alternatives are way worse.
Fields sucks He’s NOT an NFL QB…he is very athletic and can run…but he is a lot like Zach otherwise…inaccurate, can’t read defenses fast enough, doesn’t make good quick decisions… Seriously I don’t understand your love for him He’s no better than Winston, Dalton, or Jones…yes he’s younger but that’s it
It's not that I love him, it's just that pickings are slim, and yes today he has shown out similar to Winston and Jones, but youth does matter. He is more likely to improve than other guys. His passing rating has improved every year, and running ability does matter. Maybe if we somehow end up with a good OC or a HC like Brady, he could take another step forward. He did lead Pitts to 4-2 record, which is better than Russ, though within margin of error. That is not bad for a bridge guy. I am not looking at him as a franchise QB. But we need a bridge guy, and Fields, while today may be on the same level as the other guys you mentioned, is younger and therefore can improve next season and gives us better probability to be better than them in 2025. Again, I don't see a great QB available in free agency nor the draft frankly. Hence I have identified Fields as the best FA QB available, and yes that factors in his age and probability of improvement for 2025. Who else would you rather have? Pickings are slim.
I liked Fields in College, I liked him going into the '21 draft and I still think he could be a very good QB if he were to land in the right situation. I think he could experience a Darnold-like breakout if he were to land on a team with good pieces and good coaching around him. That being said, I don't think that team is the Jets and I wouldn't look at him as any more than a bridge QB.
It might not be, we could still end up with Brady. Look at the odds. Bobby Slowik +600 Brian Flores +750 Joe Brady +800 Aaron Glenn +800 What this means is that no one has any idea who will be the coach. Glenn and Flores fit the defensive coach profile Woody hired in the past. Slowik just interviewed, so he may have moved a little higher due to recent interview, and Brady is obvious choice as the best OC, but all of these numbers are very low percentage. Even combined. We may be in for a surprise. Or not. No one has a clue, which fits nicely with Connor's statement that there are simply no leaks from the Jets.
If he's a free agent I agree. 5 years/150 million which is basically a David Carr contract. He's not going to be a top 5 superstar but he's good enough to focus on the rest of the team, make it good, and make the playoffs. Getting people like Darnold and McCown in here might not get the Jets over the hill but at least we'll immediately be able to get TO the hill which we haven't even gotten to in a decade and a half now. Get good first, then worry about perfection.
