Pick up Reshad or Chad Jones in the draft and have them split time with leonhard and Smith and we will be just fine
This makes absolutely no sense. No team is built to have one player be completely deficient at his most important job description. Teams run more than two WRs in a passing play. He still has to worry about the TE, the guy in the slot, the HB coming out of the backfield, the FB on a late release, the other TE...etc. There is still a lot that he would need to diagnose aside from two players. Safeties are supposed to see the entire play, that's why they are the ones who call out the signals. He's terrible at that. This is the NFL, he is going to be playing against the best talent in the world for this sport. Sure, he can lay a shoulder into someone but 9 times out of 10 an experienced or highly talented WR/HB is going to be able to juke out of it, spin out of it, dodge it, or simply shift their weight to absorb it and keep going. He's not playing against UCLA's trash HBs anymore. Oh, and if he tries that crap against any TE in the league, he's going to look worse than Bosworth vs. Jackson. If you need to hide his weaknesses on a defense then he sure as Hell is not worth a first round pick. Anyone who takes him in the first is going to be influenced mostly by his combine numbers and we saw what good chasing a player like that did for the Jets in 2006. If Mays is on this team, this defense is taking a huge step back financially and talent-wise.
It's more than poor coverage skills though. He's also an inconsistent tackler and very far from a playmaker. And he didn't have a very good senior season.. With average triangle numbers, I'll bet he wouldn't be rated nearly as high
Darrell Stuckey's name needs be thrown into the ring, surprised he isn't mentioned . The only problem, Stuckey might be drafted in rd 3 or early 4....out of reach for the Jets.
key words completely deficient: thats stupid he has a first round grade by most if not all draft experts..... im sure he is capable of covering, its just not the best part of his game. It was said he is bad at diagnosing plays, having two less responsibilities just makes it easier does it not. Not Rocket Science. One of the biggest hitters in college and tackler, scouts say he can play linebacker... I'm sure an NFL coach will be able to teach him a little better fundamentals and i doubt anybody is running him over the guy is a beast and there is no arguing that. Individually he is already rated by most as a first rounder EVEN before the combine. And much like a 4-3 end such as Mario Williams would have more value for the Texans as apposed to his effectiveness in the Jets 3-4 scheme, I think Mays has more value to the Jets, than a team with a poor secondary. And the 29th pick is not a HUGE financial set back in fact its a great spot to take a risk on a boom/bust player.
U understand this makes no sense how can having a weakness in coverage be beneficial for a DB.Teams play more 3-4 recievers sets now more than ever so he will have to cover a wr once in a while. Taylor mays doesnt fit for us, with Rhodes gone we need someone who can cover te's something Rhodes was excellent at.
Obviously, i didn't mean that literally, I'm not talking about putting pads on me and running out there..... I'm talking about one of the top three, four safties in this draft. Kids got some skills I'm sure.
Rex likes to blitz the safties having taylor mays rush the quaterback would be huge for the blitz schemes
The fact that we blitz with a the safeties 20% of the times doesn't mean we can select a S based solely on his blitzing ability... if that's the case let's sign Gibril Wilson and have him start along with Ihedigbo... they're both excellent blitzers. The ONE skill both E. Smith and J. Ihedigbo have is that they are good physical, blitzing, run stopping safeties... why don't we try to add a S with a different skill-set (a ball-hawk)? Ed Reed will tell you that safeties in Rex's D like to pick passes too
I think the important thing to note is Mays is best suited to be a safety that lines up close to the line of scrimmage, and that's what we already have Jim Leonard doing. I think Mays will be a decent player if he's in the right scheme, but that right fit isn't with the Jets.
He is talented and this isnt a situation like Gholston where u can doubt his passion for the game, but he is liabilty. Maybe if we had Ed Reed where mainly Mays could stay in and blitz and play in the box as a hybrid backer. But we dont have anyone like Reed, Leonhard and Smith arent great cover guys themselves and dont have the speed to play deep safety
He has a first round grade for the same reasons Mike Mamula and Veron Gholston did: their Combine numbers. The guy is a beast of an athlete but he is not a good football player. Teams like the Raiders take him in the first round and I don't have to tell you what that usually means for the grade he deserves" The guy freezes when he needs to make a read on a play in front of him. When the ball is in the air, he frequently chooses to try and go for a big hit instead of swatting at the ball or trying to jump the route. He has the aggression but the brain function is not there. He constantly takes bad angles winds up getting to the play too late when his speed should have him there well before the ball ever gets to the receiver. 1. I'm glad that you at least bothered to make a distinction between those two words. I have watched a lot of USC football this season and I cannot tell you how many times I saw Mays only put a shoulder into someone or fail to try and wrap up ball carriers. The best he can do is reach and pull down players but crap like that is not going to fly in the NFL. Backs, tight ends, and receivers are bigger and stronger and he is going to look like a fool trying to swat them down. Also, the fact that Nelson Rosario was able to shove him around for about 10 YAC when he did try to wrap up was absolutely sickening. A WR giving up about 30-40 lbs with an extra inch, making him lanky with a high center of gravity should typically equal that WR getting broken in half. Instead, he forced Mays around like he was a tackling dummy. I've seen that lack of effort on this team before, he's wearing #50. Thus far that is coverage, reaction time and tackling where he is lacking, the three most important skills he needs. 2. Teams looking to draft him are mostly Tampa Two teams looking to switching him to MLB. Do you really think that they want him to change positions because he is too awesome at safety? They want him to change positions because he's not good enough to play the one he's been playing. It's not rocket science. He was rated that high before the combine because of his athleticism and because he was a starter on a great USC defense for two years. How can you actually make this argument? Here's me: "He is not going to be a good safety" Here's you: "It doesn't matter, everyone else is good." Maybe, MAYBE, his poor play would be overshadowed by the better play of Revis, Leonhard and Cro but there is two sides to that argument. Putting in a bad player brings down the overall effectiveness of the secondary unit. We may have the best corner in the league but as for the rest, no unit is completely invincible to the point that they can suit up John Q. Public and not miss a beat. And why would you not just draft a guy who can already cover and tackle as a safety instead of putting in a potential coverage liability. Rex's system requires safeties who are flexible enough that they can blitz and cover. That is why Leonhard is able to perform as well as he can, because he can do both of those. Mays barely gives you one of those and when the deficiency is coverage with a safety, that is not a good sign. Mays is a physical phenom who put awesome workout numbers. We already have one of those on the roster in Gholston and we all know what it's like to have a failed project on the team. Mays should be avoided like the plague.
I wanted to keep a close eye on Burnett's Pro Day....looks like he did well....he could be an option for us in the late 2nd if the Jets decide to grab a safety. per rotoworld http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.aspx?sport=NFL
I do like Burnett, but I'm starting to move toward the "I'd really like to address DL/OLB above all else" camp for the first two rounds. Obviously, if we lose Leon I'd want a RB in the first two, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that, barring strange player availability, our first two picks will come from those 2 areas. Still, we're in the strange position with this draft that very few possible picks would make me upset.
if i didn't think there was a chance Pool's head could explode like cherry bomb after contact....I'd agree with you. Safety is still a need. As well as the positions you mentioned.
