Obviously Mason doesn't know MrE. I actually like major Wright. I watched a couple of Florida games trying to see Dunlap and Haden. Dunlap looked terrible to me. I mean, he was never quick off the ball, he never did anything smart. Haden I didn't get much look at because he was always off screen, but Wright, in my mind, seemed to be there when it was important. I wasn't able to tell range, fluidity, power, or anything, but hhe's a safety and when things got hairy, he made them safe. I'm a fan. I admit: I LOOOOVVVE both Berry and Thomas and would take either over almost anyone, even Graham, if we had that choice, but I think Wright is the best value after those two.
If Thomas is on the board at 29 the pick becomes a no brainer a this point. Otherwise and most likely I hope Burnett is available in the second. Right now it seems like the best bet for us is to trade out of the first to pick up an extra 3rd. Hopefully someone is available that some team wants to move up for.
Here's some tape for you Mason: USC vs. Ohio State 1. Makes a huge hit, but fails to wrap up. 2. Strafes in front of the ball carrier, assists on a tackle. 3. Over pursues and is caught out of position. Epic fail. 4. Fails to wrap up Terrelle Pryor. Throws him out of bounds. Poor form. 5. Makes a nice play on a reverse, avoids a blocker and assists on a tackle. USC vs. Cal 1. Stops and waits for ball carrier, misses the tackle. Fails to wrap up... 2. Comes off the edge unblocked, makes the play in the backfield. 3. Rolls with the quarterback and intercepts a badly thrown ball. 4. Gets beat on an intermediate route. Fails to cover a receiver in man-to-man. 5. Stays home and hits ball carrier out of bounds. WRAP UP! 6. Fights through stiff arm and shoves back out of bounds. 7. Incredibly poor tackling effort...almost like he isn't trying. 8. Puts a hard hit on a ball carrier, but goes for the forearm hit instead of wrapping up. USC vs. Notre Dame 1. Attempts to make a huge hit, and the ball carrier fights through the poor "tackle". 2. Pushes a tripping ball carrier to the ground. 3. Saves a touchdown on a fake field goal pass. 4. Has absolutely no idea where the ball is, plays for the hit, and gives up huge gain. 5. Attempts to deliver big hit, receiver easily breaks tackle and scores. 6. Attempts to deliver big hit, completely dives over receiver. USC vs. Oregon 1. Gets beat, but forces incompletion as receiver falls to ground. 2. Takes a poor angle and completely misses ball carrier. 3. Slow to react, fails to reach ball carrier on a TD run. 4. Delivers huge hit on ball carrier...still shows poor form. 5. Gets juked out of his shoes, but reaches out and brings down ball carrier. USC vs. UCLA 1. Assists on a tackle. 2. Reads the play and brings down the ball carrier...with poor form. 3. Fights off blocker and trips up ball carrier. 4. Grabs the ball carrier high, but adjusts, wraps up, and makes the tackle. 5. Poor effort. Gets driven back about 7 yards by a much smaller player. USC vs. Boston College 1. Takes a poor angle, allows the catch. 2. Takes an absolutely awful angle and gets burned...gives up a TD.
Just thought of another somewhat outrageous possibility: Chris Cook? He might last to our second and he would be an interesting candidate for nickel/safety.
I like Major Wright too, but I have a lot of guys rated ahead of him. Nate Allen, Darrell Stuckey, Chad Jones, Chris Cook, Morgan Burnett, Reshad Jones, and Myron Rolle are all ahead of him in my rankings.
This pretty much confirms the "myth." He is superfast,t here is no doubt. He can play the run pretty well, but those pass coverage misplays are TERRIBLE. I mean, he overruns a guy RIGHT IN FRONT OF him. He looks like he has poor diagnosis skills to me. But what is really surprising and that I haven't seen mentioned many places: for a man that big, he CANNOT get off blocks. That's a killer for me.
It's because people get that mob mentality on message boards. You'd find more hate here for Mays because that's emerged as a focus, just like you'd probably find more love for Kyle Wilson here. Heroes and villains emerge this time of year, other sites probably have their own guys. As for the Mays thing, I just don't understand how people could have watched SC play and not understood where his weaknesses are.
Yeah, I mean, when drafting you ahve to consider what everyone else is thinking - I mean, Wright isn't value UNTIL Allen, Stuckey, Jones, Cook and Burnett are off the board, definitely. R. Jones and Rolle, maybe he's in that mix, but even though I rate those players above him, I still like Wright better, if that makes any sense.
I've been a big Chris Cook fan. IMO, Cook has the skills to play CB/Safety.....something I'm certain would intrigue Rex.
Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, Ryan Mathews, and Jahvid Best are all really good reasons to trade back into the first round. As much as I would like to see Mathews in green and white, trading out of the first would be an ideal move.
The problem with Mays is he is going to be over drafted because some team falls in love with his crazy size/speed combo. I think Mays could carve out a nice NFL career as a better version of a Eric Smith type player. Not worthy of a first round pick but a solid role player.
i know the point of this thread is to talk draft safeties but to me i think it will be a step back to be starting a rookie safety this year. i would rather pick up a vet like sharper for a year or too and draft a guy late who has potential so they can sit and learn the D. the last thing i want to see this year is out safety being burned my big plays over and over. also it is important to get a guy who knows how to tackle, not like mays. as a safety you are the last line of defense and if you cant wrap up and make the tackle the ball carrier is going in for 6.
I agree with this. Taylor Mays' only value to the Jets would be in a Smith/Ihedigbo role. He's not a worth a first round choice.
hhmmmm, what team owner is a sucker for players with size and speed with no skill? oh yean. Mays welcome to the RAIDERS:metal::metal:
I think Oakland is going to completely reach for a player with the crazy size/skills combo like they always do, but I don't think it will be for Mays. I think Campbell after his workouts wins the crazy AL draft lottery this year.
Once again the draft becomes easier. We will probably use the Rhodes pick to grab an Olineman. I would target 3 players and if none are available, I would trade down. The three I would target would be Thomas, Matthews and Tate. Wilson, Graham and Kindle will be long gone.
I really want Chris Cook in round two. I think he is perfect for the Jets. He can play in a rotation with Smith/Ihedigbo and play nickel and be insurance if a corner goes down. He has so much versitility and like Sean Smith last year, unfortanetly I think he is going to continue to rise. He may not reach the first round, but I think he will eventually be a early second round pick. Just another reason to trade back.
Raise your hand if you see the the DB version of Vernon Gholston. Wrap up! Stop shoving people to the ground, completely over pursue, doesn't look like a football player.... does this ring a bell in anyone's head? Its the same person. Mays is a bust waiting to happen. He's a good college football player, not a great one, a good one... and he's not going to be a good nfl player
I"ll say this. He has obvious talent, but should be much more polished for a 3 year starter. Wouldn't want him as a first rounder. Can't afford first round risks in this league.
