You know, I had a similar thought when I read this: "It's French class. I will say this: It's a lot different, the verbiage and everything else. I wanted to recognize more of the calls and understand it. I won't go to your extreme but thought how could the Head Coach not know the language that is being called for the offensive plays? I thought about guys like Bill Walsh, Jimmy Johnson not knowing what was being called. I know he is a defensive guy but he needs to know all this stuff. I thought he did know this stuff.
Considering the codes come from Rex to Sanchez, perhaps their actual target is not the same as their destination....?
I think this code system is just one more thing for him to worry about. I really wish there was a way that he could just hold the clipboard for a game or two and absorb it from the sideline. I think he really needs to step back and mentally regroup. But that aint gonna happen because as soon as Clemens does something good everyone will jump on the bandwagon.
All the news out of Jets world this week is very refreshing compared to the "same approach, process" mangini bullshit.
I cant tell you all how much I am releived that our offensive genious Rex Ryan is stepping in and handling the offense. We couldn't be in better hands.
"learning all the verbage".......WTF??? REX look at Schotty and tell him you want a F*king screen called ! you dont need to know the BS verbage bro
he idea of a codeword system might sound a little pee-wee football-ish, but I think it can have a real positive effect. Sometimes people get caught up in the emotions of a heated football game and something like this can work to "reset" Sanchez's mental state and remind him to think about the overall picture, not just the next play. I like his idea
After they install the 'code system' maybe they can teach him how to not stare down the receiver he is going to throw the ball to. I wish i had the time and effort to put in to see if the people that don't think that Ryan is HC material are the same ones that don't like how he is getting involved in the offens and if so are the ones that hate Schotty and need someone to step in. We all kind of agree that Schotty is running a complicated system and someone has to step in with the play calling. I see no problem with Rex taking control of his team and taking the reigns from someone that will possibly be replaced in the off season. Love the fact that Sanchise had the boys over for thanksgiving though, shows some leadership.
It also said something that they guys went over there instead of making excuses to get out of it. Show's that he still has the respect of the team, and they still believe in him
Does Rex plan on yelling the code when Sanchez starts running out of control to escape pressure? That is where he really gets himself in trouble. Using codes to tell him to get the ball down field or throw something short is the same as play calling correct? Maybe I am missing something..............
It's called "coaching". Helping players develop is what these guys get paid to do. If young players didn't need help in there development, there wouldn't be a need to have coaching staffs.
Bill Walsh was an offensive coordinator who invented the west coast offense. Jimmy Johnson was a defensive coach. those are not good examples.
They were coaches who won Super Bowls. What Rex and the Jets hopefully are striving for. I'm sure Johnson and or Walsh knew the "verbiage" for their non-specialties and didn't just sit back and assume the coordinator would pull a rabbit out of their hat.
The code system: Ryan doing the Little Hiawatha dance - "Great throw kid! A few more like that and you and I are set for life." Ryan making a slashing motion across his throat with the side of his hand - "Throw another one like that and you and I are toast son." Ryan throttling Schotty on the sidelines - "I can't believe he just called a triple reverse fleaflicker with Mangold going deep down the right sideline, that wasn't your fault son." Ryan choking the chicken on the sidelines - "Hey this is fun, do whatever you want."
I'm really surprised by some of the posts in this thread. We need to remember that Rex is learning what it means to be a head coach too. It's obviously TBD whether or not this code system works, but it's nice to hear that he's taking steps and making an effort to correct what he sees as issues with the team that he can help with outside of the defensive realm. He's learning to manage the entire team and not just the defense. That's probably not a real easy thing to do when he's so involved with the defense. And for those of you bitching about it, give me a break, would you rather here some douche bag pretending to be someone else talk about process and consistency while everything is going wrong and something OBVIOUSLY needs to change? As for people questioning what the system is for, it seems real simple to me. Ryan is basically going to be communicating to Sanchez how careful he needs to be with the ball at the moment. So if we're up 14 he's probably going to give him a code to not take any chances at all. If we're driving down inside 2 minutes down by 6, he's probably giving him the go for broke code. We're not talking rocket science here.
