Personally I think it's out of place for any coach to flip the bird to the fans, If he want's to liven up the press conferences and make a couple of jokes I'm all for it.

He represents the organization at all times, not some of the times, what he did was inappropriate and he should apologize. Some fans are going to be Jerks, that includes Jet fans, it does not give the coach an excuse to be a jerk also, we complain because BB does not shake the hands of some coaches because he is a sore loser, but we are okay with this?

I fear that RR will start eroding his leeway with these kind of antics if they continue, if the Jets start to lose he will not be given the benefit of the doubt as some other coaches receive. I hope he reins in his act because if continues to add baggage to his his reputation the only thing that will keep him employed is him winning on a consistent basis and we know how hard that is to do in the NFL.

    Really?
Can't speak for anyone else, But I kind of like a guy in the stuffy NFL whos not afraid to be himself. I'm not condoning this action, but come on, everybody, everywhere now has a camera phone, and I would not expect him to become Mary F'n Poppins overnight.
Ryans just had an amazing rookie year and is starting to relax a little. Look at the picture, its hardly that of an angry man is it, if it were, then yes he should curb it.
On a slightly different issue, I bloody hate it when fans dish out crap to Players and coaches, then when they get it back complain to the organisation. Assholes.

He wasn't a jerk, I'll bet you 20 Coach's club PSLs that the Dolphin fans were laughing when Rex gave them the finger. It was an appropriate gesture

I don't really think it matters what Rex does, as far as leeway goes. He's in NY. If he loses, he'd get shredded even if he was a quiet, reserved gentleman. If he wins, while the press may get some headlines out there about his brash behavior, they won't really be able to say squat.

What Ryan does will get the spotlight on the Jets, get fans other than Jets fans talking about him and the team, and will get casual fans to start buying Jets merchandise. If it's a 'black eye' for the league, Rex will get a fine. And Woody will pay the fine.

Bottom line is, the only thing that truly matters is the win/loss column. The rest is fodder to fill the empty spaces in the news page and on sports websites. It doesn't matter.

In my post I mentioned that I was all for him livening up the press conferences with his jokes as I also think the NFL is a little to strict. That being said we know the fans can go way over the top and be mean spirited.

Coaches cannot respond in kind to the fans, they are on a different level than the fans are, there is a code of conduct and responsibility to the organization they represent. That's why the coaches and players make the money they do, they are considered professionals and when they do something wrong they pay for it, whether is financially or with their careers.

The fans don't pay any consequences for their stupid behavior...unless they are in Chargers stadium of course.

    They make money for Ws.

I understand what your saying, but I must be classless, because I really don't care that when hes off duty he has a bit of fun with opposing fans.
Are you going to have a go at the fans that were booing Ryan? Ryan was not dressed in Jets gear....so?
Nope, Mr Ryan carry on please
