I don't know how anyone can look at the 2024 season and not immediately recognize Rodgers' contribution to the giant toxic mess that the Jets became last year. The single-culprit arguments don't really make sense to me.
That's flawed. The Jets bar is 5 games, thats what they won last year with Rodgers. The Steelers bar is 10, thats what they won without Rodgers. Lets see how each team does as compared to where they were before they essentially traded QBs --- I personally dont see Rodgers winning 11 or 12 games in Pittsburgh, I think they will be lucky if he plays that many games . so I think they will fall short of their bar. Jets? who knows. 5 or 6 wins is probably a safe bet
With Sauce, Garrett, Breece all in their prime, and with our new book-ends OLine, I would have (10000%) have kept Rodgers. Starting from scratch with a new coaching staff and a new QB who's proven he sucks is a recipe for yet another tough season.
I haven’t looked into it in detail but just from what I’ve seen from the sidelines here, if the Steelers REALLY wanted to keep him, they could have. They benched him and never went back to him even when Russell faltered down the stretch, then they made him a token mediocre contract offer because they needed SOMEBODY at the position. If they had really wanted to keep Fields they could easily have extended him during the year, or at least matched the Jets’ offer after the year ended and could also have beat it if they were really into it. They didn’t … they acted like they didn’t really care, so no, I’m not buying that the Steelers REALLY wanted Fields and we stole him from them. They may have liked him as a safety net better than Mason Rudolph, but my gut says that’s all it was.
Yeah I get that thinking but I also think that having an older QB who is set in his system and then asking a new rookie coaching staff to come in and try to implement their thing…it just doesn’t work. Do we think Rodgers would be all in to learn a new system? No way. On the other hand, do you want the new rookie HC and OC to not put in their vision to accommodate an old QB one his way out after a year or maybe 2? No that doesn’t work either. And that’s not even getting into the intangible stuff of a strong willed and outspoken QB and how he impacts the team vs. a new hard nosed HC. That marriage just wouldn’t work. Of course, this is on Woody as much as anything. If he wanted to keep Rodgers, then AC was the wrong choice for HC…he should have thought about bringing McCarthy or someone like him in. But if you’re going to go with a newb at HC, then you can’t go with AR at QB. That just wouldn’t work for so many reasons. Now…that all being said…I have issues with the new direction only because we’ve tried rookie GMs and rookie defensive HCs and rookie OCs before multiple times and we have failed EVERY time (outside of Rex I guess), so I would have preferred a different direction with the HC, but that’s a different discussion, and now at least for me, all I can do is hope that THIS time, we FINALLY got the right guy at HC. I’m not overly optimistic, but maybe after seeing Edward’s and Mangini and Bowles and Saleh ALL fail, maybe AC is the guy to finally make it work. Rex did it for a couple of years, maybe AC can too. Time will tell..
they made a mistake when they benched him for Russell Wilson. They fell apart down the stretch. My opinion is that they aren’t actually geniuses over there but Soxx thinks so But yah if they really really wanted Fields they could’ve offered $50 mill a year, they didn’t do that of course. So everything is relative but the reports were the hang up was about year 2 guarantees. Fields is making $20 mil per year so they at least offered him that before Rodgers, who is, coincidentally, signing for 1 year and $20 mil as their plan B option
Yah…interesting to see how it all works out… Well, we tried AR, it didn’t work out here. Now we get to try Fields…honestly I’m not super high on him but I do hope it works better than AR did…
Yea, I think because they neuter him (keep his TO low) he because a check down king. Like you I am not a fan but he is here and our QB, so I'll support him till he benched. PS, Rogers was an unmitigated disaster here. I have my doubts he will be any better in Pitt but we'll see.
Most won't agree but I saw some of the best passes thrown by a QB wearing our uniform in a long long time. So, yeah, I'm not hating on Rodgers. The 2023 injury fucked all of us. The coaching change last year fucked the defense. The area were I do hold Rodgers responsible for is our Red Zone - oh I'm sorry. GOLD Zone abilities. The Hackett/ Rodgers pairing in that regard was a disaster. It'll be sweet if we can somehow beat the Steelers in week one. But remember this - when that day is here, Aaron Rodgers wanted to be wearing a Jets uniform.
Yep and they are all cheering on Woody's decision to get rid of him. Woody's decisions have been awful and this will be another one.
They benched him for Wilson. The end. They did not want him enough. You don't bench your starting QB with a winning record if you want him there.
He will be more embarrassed when Rodgers has success in Pittsburgh next year. All Woody had to do was bring in a real head coach last off-season or when he fired Saleh. He did neither.
Well. Teams can acknowledge a mistake and try to course correct in the offseason thereafter. I think the Steelers wanted to bring Fields back a lot more than they did Wilson which is evident by their reported actions, no?
I was glad when we got rid or Rodgers but hearing it was Woody's idea makes me second guess it. Woody is wrong about everything. We are paying Rodgers 14 million this year to play for the steelers.
There were some moments of awe last year watching Rodgers play QB but not that much. The number one-score games they lost when the offense had an opportunity to win was awful. It wasn't 100% on Rodgers, but he was really unclutch last year. He didn't vibe well with the star WR and brought some lousy players and coaches with him. It was a worthwhile gamble (price tag notwithstanding) at the time, but this was guy was not leading us anywhere this year. I'm happier taking a chance on the young, dynamic QB with upside rather than trying to ride Rodgers again, especially after it failed last year
Year 1 didn't work because of the injury ya know Jets luck Year 2 is on the owner because he sabotaged the season by firing the head coach after week 5 and then the GM a few weeks later. Woody in his infinite football wisdom decided he had seen enough/gave up on Aaron Rodgers after 5 games.
