Points allowed has to do with many factors, including offensive turnovers (where the Jets were awful) More important stats to show a defenses efficiency imo would be things like yards/play in which the Cowboys were the 8th worst team in the league for that, where the Jets were 28th. Dallas had one of the highest 3rd %s in the league as well. Hell look at their matchups from last year http://www.nfl.com/teams/dallascowboys/schedule?team=DAL&season=2011&seasonType=REG The games their defense did pretty good Vs tampa, arizona (which they lost), Miami, Buffalo, Seattle, STL, Washington Their games vs mediocre teams they got completely killed. Dallas isnt a very good defense, and im quite frankly not a believer in Rob Ryan as a DC.
The NFL has always had a hardon for Dallas. Every year they prove that they are not as good as everyone thinks. It's amazing how no one gives credit to the Jets for revamping their front 7. We now have two DEs with high potential. We have drafted a Ellis and Coples to replace Scott and Pouha in the future. The only spots we need to be concerned about is OLB AT Pace's spot and safety. We do not have as bad of an aging problem as many think. Rex has the track record of being the better defensive coach, why not side with him until gets outcoached by Rob for a year (if that even happens)?
I think Rex is better at adapting to his talent. I love Rob's scheme but he seems to stay blitz happy with obvious holes in coverage. he had underrated units in OAK and CLE. DAL threw the spotlight on him and he took over a underrated front 7 who just went past their prime overall. so the hype was there as the talent was going down. and DAL has been moving heaven and hell to shore up their DB's but injury and the lack of a true cover safety as been a thorn in their side. if the DB's can get it together, any defense with Ware off the edge and Rob Ryan calling the plays can make some noise.
^Agreed. Rob is good, and will make that D real good. We're yet to see Rex/Pettine at the Jets with a dominant passrusher. If Coples or Wilkerson or both command a double team regularly it's gonna be fuckin fun to watch what this D does.
With the Ryan brothers in 2012, there will be a direct corollary between the coach's body weight and their defense's total points allowed. Rob looks to still be around 335 lbs, ergo, the Cowboys defense will yield that many points. Rex is down to about 260, we'll give up that many.
So Morris Claiborne, someone who has yet to play ONE NFL SNAP, is going to improve their secondary above what was easily the best CB duo in football by a long shot. Let me guess, Romo is going to be more clutch than Eli now too.
A whole lot of the Jets' 20th ranked scoring defense was due to the Jets' offense giving away the ball. The Jets had the most giveaways in the AFC last year, and mediocre punting. In this case, I think the Jets' 5th ranked defense (by yards) is more informative.
idk if you worded that correctly as there are only 4 starting QBs in the nfc east lol. anyways, darrelle revis was rated #5 on the nfl top 100 and demarcus ware was rated #6. its a sign, the jets will have the better defense next year. with the addition of quinton coples, (hopefully) improved safety play, the coming of mo wilk, and a weak schedule we definitely should be better than the cowboys concerning defense
No matter the numbers last year; THIS year are team is not un stoppable(defensivly) but this Unit will be the VOCAL point of this team once again this year. Talent across the board with a huge % of players returning from a NO TRAINING CAMP season...things will be fun to watch. 1 ELITE CB + 2 above average CB 2 Sure tackling in the box bigger then last years safeties 3 MOTIVATED on Contract year LB's + 1 Great ILB + Davis,Mayhem,Mauga and crew DL will be stout this year and I am very much on the approval of draft great defensive lineman 2 years in a row its where u win the game the TRENCHES ST speaks for it self being Westoffs last year I hope a great show
Im tired of the no training camp excuse. Every team had no training camp. Other then that I agree and I think our D will be better then last year. Maybin and Coples are the wildcards that can completely change our D this year.
The Cowboys have better personnel on defense than the Jets do, but I think I still trust Rex more as a d-coordinator than I would Rob. Rex has proven to be the better coach so far in their careers, and it isn't close.
I just took a look at their depth chart. The Jets look on paper to have a better d-line than the cowboys. The Cowboys have a better linebacking unit. I'd call the secondaries about even. Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick at the corners as compared to Revis, Cromartie and Wilson. Both sets of safety tandems are atrocious. On second look, it looks about even. The difference (albeit slight) is that the cowboys seem to have more playmakers in their LB unit. Ware, Spencer, Sean Lee, and potentially Bruce Carter (who hasn't done anything yet, but has subperb talent) and a solid guy like Dan Connor. I think it is certainly debateable, although I'm not a fan of Byran Thomas, Pace and Scott. IMO, they are old and slow. I love Harris.
I love how Bills fans now feel they are the guru's of defense b/c they brought in an oft injured, consistent decline DE. Good job guys! Also, Morris Claiborne has yet to play a down. We have no idea if he can even start in this league. The Jets CB tandem is beyond any in the entire sport.
Revis, IMO, is the best corner in football. However, also IMO, Carr is also in the top 5. I like both Cromartie and Claiborne. I haven't seen much of Kyle Wilson, to be honest with you, but I have seen a lot of Jenkins and Scandrick and I think they are quality. Its about even, with the Jets having the edge, IMO.
We drafted another beast with no motor. We should have drafted an OL. We got Gholston v2.0 from a basketball school. However, Rex beats Rob everyday of the week coaching defense.
Yeah, those are some dumb comments from the execs and scouts. Even if the Jets D is aging, which it isn't, it doesn't matter. The question was which D will be better in 2012, not the next 5 years. Jets have some young talent ALL around the D. Revis - 27 Cromartie - 28 Kyle Williams - 24 Eric Smith - 29, Yeremiah Bell - 34 Landry - 27 Pouha - 33, Ellis - 24 Wilkerson - 22 Devito - 28 Coples - 22 Pace - 31 Bart Scott - 31 Harris - 28 Maybin - 24 Thomas - 33 So we have an aging LB corps, but we drafted Coples, Wilk, Demario and Ellis to take over the front 7. And no way on earth do the Cowboys have a better secondary than Jets Revis, Cro, Wilson, Landry, Bell/Smith. Not in a million years. Last year, Jets were 5th and they lost NOBODY and gained more players. Jets had the 5 best pass D. Cowboys had 23rd. So much for that aging D!
FYI, there were trade rumors for Jenkins. He's on thin ice. Not a top tier CB. He's decent, but I'd take Wilson over Jenkins. Jenkins is way too inconsistent being in the league for the 5th year. As for Scandrick, he too is inconsistent. Flashes some great plays, but lacks concentration on others. Carr is good. Not great, but I'd put him close to equal with Cromartie. Cromartie plays great press coverage being opposite Revis. Cromarties gets picked on a lot for that matter so he's always under the QBs microscope and thats why he'll give a play here and there of course, but he'll also make some good plays. Jets don't get the edge. They own the Cowboys in the secondary. There's a reason why Cowboys traded up to pick up Claiburn and paid Carr. Problem is, they lost Newman, and will have a rookie to start the season. Even Revis wasn't close to great his first year.
