We're having a hard time finding elite players on offense because our scouting department doesn't know what to look for in that type of player. That's the only answer I can see at this point. Whatever else happens the Jets clearly need a total reset in the talent scouting department. The guys we have found that were good over the last 14 years have almost all been on the defensive side and the coach has been on that side also. That suggests that the coach has been a key player in scouting and evaluation and that's where the Jets have managed to find players. You need to have the scouts finding good players independent of the coach coming out and giving his thumbs up. Rex was a DL coach by trade. He knows talent on the DL. That's why we have Mo Wilk, Richardson and Snacks on the DL. It's why we have Douzable and Ellis and Barnes backing things up.
Most coaches decline as they pass early-50's. 50 is to a coach as 30 is to a player. As with players there are exceptions to the rule. The decline could be the lesser ability of older people to adapt to new circumstances as they arise. Young guys come in with fresh ideas and sometimes those ideas invalidate or weaken established norms.
You don't just draft an elite offensive player. They don't come into the league elite. You develop them. The scouting department is middle of the road in my opinion as far as eye for talent goes... The problem is the front office has largely ignored offense in the early rounds (where the good players usually come from) and you have a coaching staff that can't develop or get the most out of offensive players. If Dez Bryant gets drafted by a Rex Ryan team there's no way he becomes the Dez Bryant that he has become in Dallas for example.
Good post. I think it's probably very accurate, and a bit ironic given your handle. Didn't Idzik revamp scouting over the offseason?
I don't think firing Rex will solve our issues. It's Idzik that needs to have his job in question. #preachingtothechoir
Darrin Walls & Antonio Allen playing corner are like Rex playing head coach. They're all out of position
This long time Jet fan hopes for better days. I really don't think improvement lies in firing everyone and becoming an expansion team. However, this is an offensive league by virtue of the rule changes. The main job of a head coach today is to communicate with his QB. Rex lacks that ability and he is very narrow in his approach to the game. A head coach's job is to coach the coaches, motivate the players and deal with the media. He should be as comfortable at an offensive meeting as he is with the defense. During the game he should be at the OC's shoulder when they have the ball and near the DC when they do not. Nice man though he is, he hasn't grown as a HC. He can go on TV or become a DC with some other team like his brother. But he cannot turn this around because he lacks the skills to run the whole operation.
This will never happen. Marty isn't HC material. He needs someone overseeing him that will not allow him to throw 70x a game and will force him to run the ball to balance things out. Unfortunately Rex isn't that guy, he's been emasculated by Woody and Idzik. Rumor has it Rex carries a pocket pussy on him now.
Let's see what kind of effort and game plan the Jets bring out this Sunday. It's doubtful they'll be anywhere as terrible as they were against the Chargers. They had been competitive in all their games before that. But it will be easy to get trounced against Peyton if they continue to get penalties and make tactical and mental mistakes because he will kill you.
If the Jets come out flat again or are badly out coached then not a bad idea. Then you'd have to ask who'd be the Interim HC. The only guy on the staff whose been a HC in the NFL is Marty and I'd like to see him get fired too.
We were competitive against the Raiders, one of the worst teams on the league (it is not a positive to be competitive against a bad team even if you win; you kind of want to dominate those teams but we struggled), and somewhat competitive against the Bears, a team below .500 in a game we never took a lead in. After a great first quarter against the Packers they dominated the Jets from the middle of the second quarter forward. Getting dominated for two and a half quarters doesn't equate to being competitive just because we built a big enough lead early that the score was close at the end. The Detroit score was close but again we trailed the entire game, never taking a lead. Detroit is not an elite team. They are rather average. The best team we played kick the shit out of us from beginning to end. That wasn't an anomaly it was the realistic difference between a good team and a bad team. Keeping the scores close against average to bad teams is not something to hang your hat on. The two good teams we played dominated us, the Packers simply got off to a slow start before doing do.
Rex's pals in the media are putting out their anti-Idzik spin while Rex is getting credit for accepting the blame. Other teams deal with injuries and play through them but when it happens to the Jets we get the blame game via his leaks and cronies.
To be fair it is a somewhat credible defense of Rex. You have to ignore his own mistakes to do so, but the criticism of Idzik is valid if you are only looking at this season. He has assembled a rather talent barren team at the passing and pass defense positions.
