The Ghost makes too much guaranteed money to get cut so get used to seeing #50 on the field. That being said, you might start to see his playing time start to dwindle the closer we get to Pace returning. Regarding the "fire" aspect, I don't think you can teach "mean". You have to have it in you from jumpstreet or you don't and I'm not sure Vern has it in him. End result, Vern will play out his contract but not be offered a re-up..
I am actually starting to ponder that he was on Roids in college and up to just before the combines. Now he suffers from hypo-conadism and a lack of drive. He's tapped.
i feel like he can be SOMETHING if he just got motivated. he honestly didnt look bad last week. he helped give opportunities to other players at least. i believe rex is the guy who will find out what makes the ghost tick, what gets him fired up, and unleash what was seen in his best moments at OSU
I just don't get VG. The guy is a beast, he works out a ton, he CAN play, it's like he's just too lazy once he gets on the field. You'd think he would know his job was on the line and he'd step it up a little. I just don't get it.
"If there's a piece of fabric that you can hit before that guy is down, then go take a shot at him." Quote of the century!
ka ching.... that has crossed my mind many times with VG - may have been the case with guys like mandarich and bosworth as well.... though i would venture to say that its the hypoGonadism and not the all to popular hypoConadism that plagues some genitalia. all in fun jil
Brick is exactly who I would compare Gholston to. Everyone was ready to write him off as late as last year too. For once we're in complete agreement. Well said. ------------------ So for those of you bitching about Gholston, do any of you actually watch him during games? You might have noticed that after every single play he looks up at the screen to see the replay. Perhaps he's trying to learn? Nah. Couldn't be. And you may want to actually pay attention to the guy during the game. Rex is right. If this kid gets a little fire in him, he's got shittons of potential. But don't let any of the facts deter those who have to be right about Gholston being a bust.
And don't let the fact that he was a top ten pick and either inactive or invisible for all of last season deter you either. The burden of proof is on Gholston. For the Jet's sake, I hope he's not a bust, but it doesn't look good so far. It's not as if he was unhealthy last season, it's that he was either playbook incompetent or overmatched. Neither is a good sign. -X-
Okay, well then don't let the fact that when he was drafted at #6 he was a defensive end, and he's now playing linebacker. As a DE, as I've said already a number of times, he's played pretty well so far this year. He's acted just like a young DE, taking up blockers, creating room for his LBs, collapsing the pocket, getting his hands up in the QB's face, and making some tackles, while not getting the flashy stat: sacks. As for last season, we all know Mangini punished him at least once. Given all we know, and all that's coming out about Mangini, it's not really hard to believe he wasn't given opportunities, is it? Besides the facts that the vast majority of Gholston's playing time last year came on special teams, and that it was documented that Gholston was having a rough time catching up on the playbook after joining the team so late due to eligibility rules. But why not just sit and call the guy a bust without looking at facts. It's so much easier.
I cannot believe I am saying this, but let's just stop talking about Gholston. We all have our opinions, good and bad, and we'll see what he does for the next three weeks. Then we can revisit and burn him at the stake or put him on a pedestal.
