That's ridiculous. Westerman played well but he only stood out because of that one sack. If an ufa played like Gholston did yesterday, why on earth would we cut him? Our defense was lights out and Gholston was playing a significant role. You can't argue with results.
Gholston certainly didn't blow me away, but I did see improvement from him above what he had done in the preseason. He's improving as far as grasping the defense, but he still shows a startling lack of heart during the game, and if anything will get him kicked to the curb, it's that. For a long time, I thought that was something insurmountable. Heart and Fire are not something an NFL player should lack at any point. But I saw the same lack of Heart and Fire in D'Brickashaw Ferguson in his first couple of years because there was such a curve that he had to get above and I thought it would never come. I don't worry about that when I see Brick on the playing field these days.
Yeah me too. I think Gholston is at a totally different level right now than he was last year. Last year, he wasn't able to stay on the field. This year, he's showing a lot of progress. He's not up to the level we would want him to be, but he's moving in the right direction. Westerman is not a converted LB. Gholston is. Gholston was a QB killing DE in college. Here, he has to different tasks on different plays, not just rush the QB. He has to drop down in coverage, play zone, QB contain, and even blitz him. He's got a lot to learn. He is certainly going in the right direction and I can see him play well in the coming weeks.
It's not ridiculous at all. The Jets did what they did on Sunday despite Gholston, not because of him. When your coach says you had an up and down day, despite the fact that your defense pitched a shutout, he's really calling you out and asking what exactly you brought to the party. That's why Ryan seemed so flat when he talked about Gholston. He had a defense yesterday where almost all the players WERE flying around looking for something to hit and Gholston was one of the few exceptions. The facts are that a good defense is constantly looking at and evaluating players to see what pluses they bring to the party. If Gholston plays for the next few games like he played on Sunday the Jets SHOULD move on and give somebody else a chance to stand out. They won't do that, because Gholston is a 1st round pick and the organization will defend that pick longer than if he was a UDFA or 5th round pick, but they really should move on. It's bad for a team to have somebody clearly not pulling his weight when he's got that much compensation headed his way. It sends the wrong message. Ryan sounded almost as though he's pushing Gholston the only way he knows how to at this point: that comment about if you see a little piece of fabric and the player is still moving you should hit it was hugely damning of what he sees Gholston's effort at right now. I'll bet he does cut him somewhere down the road in a big surprise move when it happens. Rex Ryan defenses don't have passive players who don't go for the throat on them. He doesn't keep people like that around. As soon as he has the credibility to ask Tannenbaum to cut him I bet he does. The clock is ticking for Gholston right now and he doesn't have a lot of time to keep his job.
That Texan 'quick-hitch-screen' down the right sideline with the OL guy leading the 'edge' push..."nudging" the Ghost back during the 1st half for a gain of around 10-yds. with Vernon who should've at least dropped-and-cleared the front interference...ending up, "standing over" the tackle. (rooting for the guy-like the guy), but Vernon was too much "drifting backwards" on that particular play. jmho.
While his play does not warrant his pay, his roster spot should be safe. We are already paying him for this year and he WAS drafted as a developmental player regardless of draft position, so I think it's safe to say he will go nowhere regardless of the next 3 weeks. If he sucks all year, we'll cut him next season so we can have the accelerated bonuses all come to fruition during the uncapped year.
BroMoose, Who knows? Given that Rex was pumping the guy up (granted, with Pace out 4 weeks) it was only the 1st game. I have to think that Camcorder Bill is probably licking his chops "looking at #50" but again, it's only the 1st game. Who knows...maybe this time next year (with some game experience under the Ghost's belt), Cam-Bill will be trying to 'scheme' away from "#50" ??
Rex sounds like he would rather you take a shot at someone than just stand there to avoid the penalty. Much like that first hit by Scott on Shaub, set a tone. Gholston needs to blast someone early and get in the flow. That being said, I thought he played decent and at least showed something.
I just don't like gholston in any way shape or form, he doesn't have the heart, hes slow attacking the ball, and and doesn't make a tackle unless he absolutely has too...he will never be more than average, if hes lucky.
Lets face it, now is his time to shine and prove he's got what it takes to warrent his 2nd string status. He should be so fired up over this shot that he is a tackeling machine, hitting everything in sight. This guy lacks the fire to be an NFL player. Especially since he got his guarenteed money. Westerman, if given the chance ole Vern has, would bury him.
I agree with you 110 % if he had the attitude of a ray lewis or bartt scott i would give him a chance, but he plays like a man who has been payed already, and is scared to get hurt.
It does not matter. Gholston has 21 million guaranteed. Maybe...Just Maybe Gholston doesn't care about football....He played his way into the contract, now all he has to do is (not) play his way out of town.... Maybe..Just Maybe....Gholston is gaming the system.
I get the feeling that last years rookies learned very little from Mangini. If they didn't do exactly what he wanted they were sent to time out. Rex knows how to motivate and teach both veterans and rookies. You don't get better at football talking about boxing, you get better at football talking about football. Gholston has improved and that shows that he can listen and learn. I don't think Rex is going to let this kid fail.
Jesus, the guy just had the best game of his career, starting for a defense that pitched a shutout. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!
