randy moss made wes welker ... i do not think he is a top 5 WR i got ... 1. Dre Johnson 2. Fitz 3. Calvin Johnson 4. Moss 5. Gregg Jennings/Reggie Wayne
Name a better slot receiver in the league. There isn't one. He's the best at what he does, so he's a top five in my opinion. It shouldn't matter who's playing across from him or who's throwing him the football...that's like saying Peyton Manning made Reggie Wayne or Larry Fitzgerald made Anquan Boldin. He's one of the most physically gifted players in the league, but until he breaks out and does something, I won't consider him a top five player. This should be his year to do that though...
i dont think thats the same at all ... defenses game plan to stop moss, not welker. until welker puts up numbers while being the focus of the D, i cant have him as a top 5 WR he had over 1300 yards and 12 TDs in 08, his second season, with the lions ... i would say that is something, and def more than rice has done in his career
Wes Welker is a matchup nightmare. I never said he was a #1 receiver, I said he's the best slot wideout in the game...and it's not even close. The guy catches a shit ton of passes and is tough as nails. I hate his guts, but he's the elite player at his position. Three straight seasons with 100 or more receptions and 1000 or more yards...pretty ridiculous numbers. That's not his role in their offense. It's his job to be Brady's check down option and he plays that position perfectly.
he's the best #2 wr in the league. but that doesnt make him a great wr. w/out moss, welker has a whole lot less value. moss, w/out welker, is still randy moss.
Calvin Johnson can become a top 5 wideout, but he's had too many no-show performances for me to place him in the top 5 at this time. Of course, playing for the dreadful Lions has hurt him to this point. Last year Rice was a big performer and make numerous huge catches. Johnson has more potential than Rice, though.
We don't know that - Moss and Welker have always played together in New England. No one in Oakland shined when they played across from Moss. I think when Moss decides to retire, Welker will still be highly productive in the slot as long as Brady is slinging the ball. You can use Randy Moss as an excuse all day, but when Revis shut down Moss last season, Welker still put up really good numbers against our defense. 15 catches for 192 yards...in one game. He was definitely a difference maker in that game.
I would put Marshall number four behind Andre, Fitzgerald and Wayne (only behind Wayne because he has a Super Bowl ring and a ton of playoff experience). Revis has not matched up against Marshall yet, so, while I can't blame you for being optimistic about the match-up I don't think Marshall will be taken away completely. I think Brandon will get his. He's not going to have a sensational statistical performance against Revis, but I definitely don't see him getting "shut down". By the way, I didn't read everybody's posts, but I did see Calvin Johnson's name mentioned. I don't think he is "elite" yet. But I think he has a chance to be the game's very best, maybe as soon as this season. We'll see. I still can't believe the numbers he put up on that 0-16 team in 2008.
They trailed big in a number of games and Johnson put up huge stats in those spots. There were a few games where he did nothing or close to nothing when the game was still close only to go off when the Lions were trailing by three touchdowns late.
dude, get your facts straight, revis has matched up against marshall back in 08, marshall had 5 catches for 55 yards, no td's. and if you have, a.johnson and wayne ahead of marshall, [both of whom revis shut down last season] what makes you think he wont shut down marshall?
I know this much, that w/moss even there other slot guy [elderman] is sucessful, which tells me something. and as far as moss goes in oakland, we all know he 'didnt try' and he was just collecting checks.
Different types of receivers. And like some above mentioned, Wayne had a good day against Revis in the AFC title game. Marshall is a big, physically dominant possession guy with great YAC ability. Johnson is a down-field big time play making guy. Also, they hardly went up against one another back in 2008. Marshall was usually playing the X while Revis was on the right side. And even if they did go up 1v1, 5 for 55 is not getting shut down. In a 16 game season that's 880 yards on 80 catches. Not great, but very solid ( maybe not by Marshall's standards, but that's not being "shut down").
Bottom line is that Marshall and Revis have not faced each other 1v1 like they will this season. You guys are confident, and rightfully so, in your guy, and I am very confident in my guy. Nobody has been more consistent over the last three years than Marshall, and that was with porous running games and inconsistent QB play. I'd like to think that he's on a much better team now and hopefully will thrive even more (maybe not stat wise, but overall). But in any case, we don't know what's going to happen. It should be a fun battle. Like Marshall said, every island has a beach, and on Revis island he'll be pitching a tent and relaxing on Beast Beach.
By the way, hennessey, love the sig. My favorite show on TV. Unfortunate we only have 1 more season of it with Carell.
Him and Marshall are one and two, although I wouldn't put Andre above Marshall. Some of the stuff Marshall does at the line and then after the catch, even against LB's, is just ridiculous.
Comparing Julian Edelman to Wes Welker has to be a joke. I hate the Patriots more than most, but I'm not biased - I never will be when it comes to this game. I'll give a player props if he deserves it and Welker is top tier.
