I like the Rex deferring the coin toss. Once Pace gets back into playing shape this defense is going to be sick and stopping the opposition on the opening drive is a great way to take possession of the game early.

JetBlue is just being a twat. I like having the ball first because Im a big believer in hte momentum shift and whats a better way of turning that momentum in your favor then by scoring and taking the lead. Scoring first demoralizes the opponent. So does forcing a 3 and out on their first drive but I feel scoring first does more for your team then just putting up the points.

And for the record I wasnt critizing Rex I love the guy, all 500 pounds of him. I was just wondering how others felt about it.

I actually like this as a Jets fan. I am so used to being down at halftime that I love having a chance to start the 2nd half.

    Just my .02.

I would rather get the ball to start the 2nd half. That way it's a win win. If you are trailing you get the ball and still have a chance. If you are winning you have a chance of gaining a bigger lead. I liked the call.

It's definitely a boost to know you get the ball and a chance to score at the start of the 2nd half. I'd defer every time if I was the coach.

I like to defer. I really like getting the ball right away in the 3rd, and I have confidence the D can stop them on their opening drive. Stopped everyone except Mia so far (NO got the FG but that's not nearly as bad obviously)

It shows confidence in the defense and can really be a huge momentum boost if the other team goes three and out.

Many more teams are opting to defer the kick now. We are not alone in this strategy.

as much as everyone here seems to think one bad game has changed everything this is a defensive team. we have a rookie qb leading the offense, so rex giving the defense the chance to get him the ball in good field position is a smart idea. i mean what happens if the offense gets the ball first and sanchez throws a pick 6?

one loss and everything rex does is being scrutinized.

Play to the strength of your team, which to that point had been his defensive unit. I think you're playing the result this time...

The reason many more teams are opting to defer is because the rule change ALLOWING them to defer is still fairly new in the NFL. 2 seasons ago it was allowed, but you did not automatically get to chose if you got the ball in the 2nd half if you deferred. That's why deferring in the old days was rare as hell. The only rare time it WAS done was in HORRENDOUS weather conditions to make sure you had the wind (or avoided it). I agree with most of the above that I would LOVE to have the ball to start the 2nd half.

He did the right thing especially being a Defensive coach he wanted to set the tempo and we fucked it up. Either way we tied it at 7 shortly after.

    Are you kidding!?

I love having the D on the Field 1st AND getting the ball after the 1/2.

If you're losing you get a chance to score 1st.
If you're winning you get to extend the lead...

I love the strategy for all the reasons mentioned.

But also: games aren't won in the first half. Tons of shit happens, I'd rather have the ball when the game is a little more meaningful.

Nope, I actually LOVED it and would love to see it again, assuming our defense comes to play this time.

I'd defer every time , I much rather get the ball starting the 2nd half.

It's a good strategy. Put your best unit on the field first to set the tone. It also has the benefit of preventing the opponent from potentially getting two scores in a row at the end of the 1st half and beginning of the 2nd to swing momentum their way.

It's also very predictable, since the opponent will normally take the ball if they win the flip. That lets the Jets control the early flow of their game plan by getting started the way they want 95% of the time.

I like deferring. I don't understand why other good defensive teams don't do this routinely.

I think the strategy has more to do with getting the ball to start the second half then it does putting the D out first. If you think about it, it did payoff against Miami as we had the lead at halftime and the ball to start the second half, we just didn't take advantage of it. I'm surprised every team doesn't choose to defer every time as I have to believe it is more important to get the ball first to start the second half then it is to start the game. Look no further then our game with NE to see this strategy paying off. We score on the opening drive of the second half and carry that momentum the rest of the game.
