Keep in mind this is gonna be a process w/ some heavy negotiations and alot of movement in terms of offers v.s demands. W/ the way Revis performed last year and the hype he is getting..his agent is gonna shoot for the stars to start. And why shouldn't he? There are valid arguments that can be made about Revis' performance to date, his value in individual games, continued upside, marketabilty, and the fact that he's in New York. But Tanny is a very good negotiator and I'm sure he'll come in around 14 mill per year to start and will present arguments of comparable players like Asomugha as well as the impending league wide issues. Obviously both sides have incentive to get this done. Revis wants to be a star in the league's biggest media market, while playing under Rex Ryan in a championship calibur defense and the Jets want to lock-up a player who has a chance to be one of the best defensive player's of all time and likely the best in the team's history. This will get done...it's just gonna take some time. Revis will likely land a heavy incentive laiden deal for around 17.5 mill per season.
He is entering the 4th year of a 6 year deal...it would be idiotic for him to hold out for that kind of money..just ask Washington and his broken leg what the insanity is in doing that? He will get between 10-12 and he will be thrilled.
Revis's contract had incentives, which he reached, that voided the final 2 years of the contract. It is currently a 4 year contract. But the Jets have the option to buy back the final 2 years at a price of about $20mil.
Revis is certainly well within reason to start the negotiations at $20 million with how he has performed. Anyone who would piss and moan at that, or turn on him for doing so, is an imbecile. and why even get worked up about that? who gives a fuck?!? let Tanny do his job, let Revis seek what he wants, and let it work itself out. if he's a Jet afterwards, great. if not, oh well. to see people getting angry and already telling him to get lost is just asinine.
Which should be enough incentive for Revis and his agent to err on the side of reasonability. If contract talks do not go well, and Revis decides to hold out, I think the Jets can call his bluff and buy the years back. For much less than his apparent asking price. Tannenbaum is the master. He built a leverage clause into the contract in case Revis was as good a player as he turned out to be.
Don't be cheap (again) Woody! But, I think this will swing depending on the cap/NFL situation next year.
I totally agree. He can get a long term contract now if he wants to be reasonable. If not the Jets still own him for the next three years and may be perfectly willing to let him play that out.
Anybody willing to wait when they get get a deal now also risks there being no season at all next year and losing that 10 million or more they would probably otherwise get as a large signing bonus in this an uncapped year.
Make him the highest player corner sure...but 20million is silly money and to me sounds like we'd have to make huge sacrifices elsewhere. I'm optimistic that this is posturing even if it is true. I hope he settles for around 15mil a season average.
That scrabble wanted out of Jokeland, so Al fucking Davis offered him a contract no one would say no to.
actually, 20mill a year is wats insane. unless he morpholigically splits into two people when on the field, thus becoming two seperate cornerbacks. if thats the case, then i see where hes coming from
This is unclear, and I haven't seen any official word on this. It is definitely true that the Jets can't franchise him in year 5 or 6; since he made his incentives, they either have to let him walk or buy back years 5 and 6 for $5 million and $15 million, respectively. From what I've read, however, there is nothing that would prevent them from franchising him in years 7 or 8, but I admit that I don't know this for sure. Thus, there is no doubt that he is committed to the Jets for the next three years for $25 million if they do absolutely nothing; what happens after that is unclear (at least to me). Given all this, it's very hard for me to believe that he would hold out next year; it would cause problems with the fans, problems with Mangold and Harris (since he'd be taking their money away), and problems with Ryan, when he has absolutely no leverage.
Can they do the deal in an uncapped year with the belief that there will be no salary cap? I know the answer is no but this should be the case. The Jets don't know what they're working with, it's only fair.
