I thought you were talking about Woody and last year? Or was that Woody comment in reference to this year? In reference to this year I feel more inclined to agree, but in reference to last year I don't think it was a diss or Woody outright refusing. I thought you meant last year. Going forward will be interesting. Will Revis turn in an All Pro performance then look to get more on the FA market? That wouldn't surprise. The Pats might franchise him which I think would be above 12 million he has now. Would Revis try to avoid that franchise tag or accept that? It will be really interesting, I was shocked by the one year deal. He's really betting on himself iunless his agents are planning on working NE for a long term deal.
I DID mean last year. Woody was behind the Jets not even trying to keep him. And I also knew that the Jets would not try to get him this off season, either. So he goes to the Pats. Shocking but true. And all the immature posters here now want him dead and see no responsibility for this by Woody. Well I do.
Which was created by the poor relationship with Revis' camp leading up to it. I don't think it was just outright refusal from Woody, I think it was an outright refusal at the terms Revis wanted and the fact that the Jets were not a playoff team at that time. Even if it wasn't a longterm deal for 16 but 12, the holdout possibility and everything with it, I don't think it's fair to just say Woody said no. He definitely played a part in it, but idzik is also a different GM than Tanny was. Maybe Idzik also wanted no part of it and it was agreement there? Rex on the other hand, I fully believe wanted Revis last year and this year but that's a different story. There is some responsibility by Woody but with the year gap it creates a separation in peoples minds I think. What's funny is I think one of the key ideas when discussing the Revis trade was that a team that was a playoff team or making a run at a SB could afford to pay Revis big money, but a team trying to rebuild would find it more difficult. Well I guess that theory played out.
Again, I never said it was all Woody's fault. Except in regard to the fact that he took a business deal's history personally. Ftr I did not hear a single bit of evidence last off season that the Jets made any attempt whatsoever to cut a deal with Revis going forward. And i was listening. If anyone here can turn up such evidnce now, I will take it all back. But I dont think that will happen.
No I know you aren't blaming Woody soley, but I'm saying I don't Woody's decision was an independent choice not to deal which is seems like you are saying. I think it was a combination of the holdouts before and the terms Revis' camp wanted. Let's say Revis' camp demanded long term high CB salary yearly. They say they won't take anything else. The Jets could try to work them lower, but they say no. It's not an official offer, but if we believe the rumors, he was looking for around 14 million a year with the most ridiculous rumors (I think leaked by the Jets) saying he wanted north of 16 or 17. He won't take less, the Jets won't give that much, a standstill occurs. The Jets know Revis is persistent from the rumors, and the Revis camp knows they have a rookie GM with a HC who loves Revis and fan base who was positive at the time on him. So basically I do agree Woody is at fault , but I don't think his decision was really independent of what happened before. In fact, I would go back and say the handling of Revis from the beginning and the band aid and what not led to the eventual breaking point and all of that is more influential than the actual breaking point of 2013
you make it sound like Revis had a choice - where were all the teams lining up to pay him $16m a year? there werent any. the Pats are as desperate as any team out there - they know they have a 2 year window to win another SB before Brady is over the hill so they need to go all in now.
Fairly shocking despite the reports the last couple of days. I have a feeling Revis will be in NE for at least a couple of seasons.
yea, I don't know about that unless you are good with him getting 20 mil next season. Enjoy him cause next year its 23 skidoo http://blog.masslive.com/patriots/2014/03/darrelle_revis_contract_with_t.html
Rich Cimini @RichCimini 2m Counting the $20M option for 2015 that he'll never see, Revis deal is 2 yrs/$32M. He's obsessed w/ that $16M APY, I'd say. #Jets
Because of that 2nd year, his cap hit this season is just $6.5 mil. They'll probably have to eat the $5.5 mil left over next year when they let him walk, but I'll take it.
This deal was created as an anti-franchise tag compromise and salary cap manipulation. Revis only counts 7m (6.5 signing + .5 per game) in 2014, freeing up an additional 5m. An extension can also be negotiated at any point if both sides feel the fit is right after some time, which from what's coming out of the team/Revis camp is the plan.
Yeah, previous post was before this bit of news actually came out... I don't think anyone reported last night or early today that there was a second year in there. It's not beyond the realm of possibility given that it would still be a (relatively) cap-friendly hit, but I agree this makes it look like a mercenary, one-year-deal thing. Most of the triggers seem to come after the 2015 cap will be set, so I suppose the current arrangement gives some flexibility to both Revis and the team.
The deal lets NE save cap space this year at the expense of $5M in space next year. They'll either cut Revis or work out an extension/restructure. Both sides know there is no way they pick up the team option as is, but it allows Revis to say he is the highest paid CB in the league, and allows the Patriots to keep about $12M in cap room for the coming season to go after guys like Browner.
So basically Revis can't get franchised after this years and either NE pays him a lot next year or they cut him and he gets to hit the FA market again. The guy is extremely confident in his ability
Somewhat related but Wilfork has asked to be released http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...lfork-has-asked-for-his-release-from-patriots
this makes sense for, and is a great signing for, the Patriots as they are a contender as they stand - we don't know what we are going to be next season but I do not we are not a single CB away from being it so this would not have been a smart move for the Jets - we already did the best we could out of this situation last year when we basically screwed a 1st round pick out of the Bucs - lets face it the Bucs couldn't even get a 7th round pick for the exact same player a year later and with no real health concerns.
From what I heard the Browns were set to trade for him but Revis refused to take a paycut so the Browns said no
right,i forgot. everything the patriots do it the perfect most righteous thing. The all knowing, organization of perfection. *
