For all you idiots that think we shouldn't keep Revis, watch the team for the rest of the year and say he isn't needed. Its never good to lose Revis, but now we will be able to put an end to this debate if Revis is truly a necessity for this team or a luxury.

It's always about the guaranteed money.

Jets will push for something close to 20-30%.

Revis will push for something closer to 60-70%.

If they can settle on 45% before kick off, Revis is ours.

It's a tough situation. Unlikely they extend him after this season since you don't know how he'll respond after the injury. If he comes back next year and is as good as he was, he hits the open market as a UFA and it will be tough to be the highest bidder. If he comes back and is just average, then we could probably resign him but it would be equally disappointing if he wasn't the same player.

I think the jets will offer him an ok deal in training camp next year. Revis might turn it down (his agent appears to be a moron), but if revis is not the same player or he gets another concussion in 2013, he will get substantially less than he thinks he will on the open market.

Revis will be running full speed, straight line about the time negotiations heat up.

If Revis is feeling really really good about his rehab, knee feels completely strong, then Revis may push his chips to the middle, play out 2013, and go UFA.

But Revis knows if he enters 2013 without a new contract and:

    1- he re-injures his knee
    2- gets another concussion
3- injures some other body part
4- his play drops way off

then he will never ever ever be offered a huge contract by anyone in 2014. And the contract Tanny was offering him before the start of the season will be cut in half as well.

Revis is in a really tough spot.

edit: same as edray10 is saying.

We'd be better off buying a better quarterback and a pass rusher.

Revis, as great a player as he is (or was) is not going to win us a trophy all by himself.

    Hasn't anyone seen "Moneyball"?

Probably because we looked at the cap situation

This team has needs all over, and a ton of money tied up already.

Were either forced to give Revis a monster deal BEFORE seeing how he comes back from his injury which is foolish on its own, or AFTER that season, when hes a full fledged UFA, with every single team in the nfl able to bid for him throwing however much money they desire. Meaning wed have to severely overpay for him.

If Revis decided to extend with us for a very team friendly deal THIS offseason, because hes worried about his injury then by all means. But thats incredibly unlikely, so its far far more likely that he plays for us in 2013 and is gone forever.

You might want to understand how things work before you go about calling people unbelievably foolish.

minus reggie white and deion sanders, i never see any FOs just allowing their stars to walk, regardless of position

i do know how things work and i know that the FO will do everything in its power to retain the greatest jet ever. sometimes it doesn't just boil down to numbers

    This is unique circumstances.

He held out, got a new deal which prohibits us from franchise tagging him (the tag is probably the best way for teams to lock up players long term), then Revis got hurt this year meaning theres NO way him and the FO agree to a deal this offseason .

So Revis is virtually guaranteed to hit the open market.

Its the perfect shitstorm of suck

(and stars walk more often than you think. Meet Vincent Jackson, Mario Williams, Ben Grubs, Carl Nicks, all this recent year)

the fact that you just compared vincent jackson, mario williams, ben grubbs, and carl nicks to revis is almost comical. i guess we just have to agree to disagree

The greatest Jet ever? Holy Shit! He's played 5 years in the NFL. Hall of Famers Joe Namath, Don Maynard and Curtis Martin say, "Take it easy."

i'd give it to curtis martin and maybe don maynard, but joe namath is one of the most overrated players ever. i love him as a jets fan and he won super bowl 3, but he's thrown more INTs than TDs. i don't consider that the greatest jet ever, sorry

Maybe Don Maynard? Seriously? Freshen up on your history youngster.

If you said "Potentially the greatest Jet ever", I'd agree. If he retired tomorrow, he's an afterthought.

Namath set records people thought unachievable early in his career. He threw way too many picks, but he redefined the game. Example...first QB to 4,000 yards (in a 14 game season no less). Unheard of at the time. Don't sell Joe short. Revis can't sniff his jock yet. A few more years playing the way he does now and I'll agree with you. Not yet though.

Mario Williams got the largest guaranteed contract for a defensive player IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL.

All of those guys are stars, I dont care how thick your fanboi goggles are.

And all of their teams let them go.

The nfl has a salary cap, and teams are forced to abide within it.

Which means sometimes if your player is commanding too much money, you have no choice but to let his ass walk.

If you think Revis is worth 6 years 100 million, well, then have fun getting to a Superbowl with a cornerback devouring so much cap space.

There is a huge reason -- fear of injury. He gets offered a fat deal in week 5 says no and blows out his knee in week 8...he is screwed

Would the Jets really offer him a fat contract with tons of money GUARANTEED before seeing how well he bounces back ?

Would Revis really accept a contract thats not that fat, without tons of guarented $$$, knowing he gets to go to the highest bidder?

    Aint so simple
