Sutton is not controlling the defense, Mangini is. There's nothing wrong with the coaching, it's the fact that they need a true NT and pass-rushing OLB.

Sutton isn't the problem, we have alot of talent on d but it's suited to the 4-3. we need to change the scheme.

We have 1 quality NFL DL on the team, Ellis. We are loaded with JAGS and age on the DL. Every other player on that line is nothing more than a rotational substition. It's the talent not the scheme. We only have two LB who are worthy of starting in the NFL.

Our secondary is loaded with talent.

They are playing the wrong scheme! Does everyone realize we have almost identical players to 2 years ago in the playoffs when we played great against SD and Pitt? We are minus Ferguson but have Rhodes and Miller/Dyson instead of tongue/D. Abe. We have 4-3 personnel playing a 3-4.

Yes we have the same personal except our starting line was Ferguson, D'Rob, Ellis and Thomas. Our LB were Brown, Vilma and Barton. We have lost half our line and a third of our LB corp. D'Rob has a knee problem which has turned him into an effective JAG. Abe played almost every game in 06 and Ferguson allowed Vilma to run free.

Robertson was a top DT 2 years ago, let's no forget the regime had John Abraham on the roster when they took over, 2 years ago we had almost the exact same players late in 2004 when we played great at SD and at Pitt in the playoffs. There is alot of talent on D.

How did we lose almost half our line? we lost ONE player from that line. brown started but Hobson played alot as they rotated in. Abe missed the last 6 games of the season and was not around for posteason and the D did just fine.

This is what Herms teams did against the run.

    01-28th
    02-18th
    03-28th
    04-5
    05-29th

We currently rank 27th against the run. Better than last year when we had Abe and we ran the 4/3.

You good sir, get my award for "Dumbest Post Thus Far in the 2006 Season."

Give the guy a break- 4 freaking games, 2 of which were wins. You act as if we've been mopped up thus far- that hasn't been the case.

You can't fault the D-coord if a particular scheme (3-4) was forced down his throat, with the understanding that it might not be the right fit for our Jets, given the fact that we are sorely lacking a pass rushing OLB and a true NT.

What's next? Will we can Westhoff after there are 3 fumbles on ST punt returns?

We also had the exact same Line less Ferg last year, we ran the 4/3, Robertson sucked and we ranked 29th against the run.

Robertson was hurt all year and ellis was hurt the 2nd half of the year. It wasn't a healthy DL last year.

we are 27th against the run yet giving up more yardage than a year ago. The #s are deceiving in '01 and '02 as we were brutal early in those years but made adjustments and were great the 2nd halves of those years. the current run D is like the embarrassment of 2003.

Robertson isn't healthy now, he has a knee issue which was diagnosed prior to him being drafted. The guy is gassed half the time he is on the field. He just can't sustain effort for more than a couple of plays.

I agree,I think our run defense is bad, but not as close as bad as last yr. We just generated more pass rush.

Our OLB's are in a 2 point stance over the tackles most of the time and its really ineffective. Hobson can be pretty good if hes given space to gain speed instead of having to initiate contact off the snap. And Bryan Thomas just gets stood up and then tries to bullrush.

thats what i noticed against the Colts at least, it then left barton and vilma overpursuing and getting out of position.

And I think this thread topic is very premature. Its Mangini's decision to run the 3-4. Sutton is running it to keep his job. You think Mangini doesnt tell him what to do? Hes employing his version of the Pats D, its not like Sutton knows it.

You mean Herms teams sucked against the run in the first few games but adjusted but Mangini with a new scheme should be fine out of the gate?

I think Mangini has a lot of say in the Defensive Gameplan. Give Sutton a chance, relax. According to most of you around here, we were going to go 5-11, i think were a bit ahead of the game.

They made the adjustments and we became good, that's what I want to see mangini do.

Fair enough but I think we need an overhaul of personal on the D front for that to happen. I hope they get the current situation better and are aggressive as can be addressing this in the off season.
