My Dad's first cousin was a gunner in WWII. He wrote this book. https://www.amazon.com/Lady-Hell-Memories-Turret-Gunner/dp/1419605569
Thank God they don't do mass landing anymore. Charging into fixed artillery and automatic weapon positions is a situation I can't even imagine never mind actually trying to disembark with a full ruck sack, weapon and ammo into 10-15ft deep waters. Rommel had his "Atlantic Wall" planned well and it showed in the casualty count. Thank God Eisenhower's ruse worked and Hitler thought the main invasion was going to happen at Calais. Those soldiers were brave beyond comprehension and I salute them all. Both those who survived and those who didn't.
