BTW does anybody think the Phillies have any shot in this series? I think the Sox are going to go through them like a hot knife though butter......

if the Rays lose, it has to go down as the greatest choke in baseball history. when you're up 7-0 in the 7th inning of the clinching game of the ALCS and don't win the series, I don't care if it was an even series or 3-1 lead, your choke is unrivaled.

The Phillies scare me. That offense is ridiculous.

However, this series isn't over yet. The Sox still have to win one more before they start worrying about the Phillies.

you have to favor the Sox over the Phillies, but, as much as I hate to admit it, the Phillies are capable of winning. I think it will be a better series than most will anticipate.

The Phillies will have a shot against either the Rays or the Red Sox, but either way you'd favor the AL team. The ALCS is not over.

I posted this hours ago in the Yankees thread.

I understand completely - I think most of us develop hatred for other teams based in most cases more on the fans of those teams than even on how much of a rivalry they might have with the teams we root for. I have family in Boston, and started rooting for the Sox in 1967 during their miracle run to the pennant, so I have a soft spot for them (the fact they've been serious rivals of the Yankees since the mid-70s hasn't hurt either). The way they've performed under pressure in the postseason these last five years is about as unprecedented as I can imagine.

At my stage of the game (being beyond college dorms and sports bars) I don't interact much with the fans of other teams, so I don't get to see how unpleasant they can be. In fact, just about the only place I see it is on this board, and let's just say I haven't been encouraged to root for the Rays by the behavior on this board of one of their fans. In some ways that's a shame, since I actually know one of their Senior VPs, and sent him a congratulatory e-mail when they clinched the AL East title (at the time I mentioned that I couldn't say that I hoped they went all the way since my team hadn't collapsed its way out of the playoffs yet, but as you know that was soon not an issue).

Also don't forget - despite the strong advantage of the AL in interleague play, and having homefield advantage in the Series the last 6 years, the NL team is 3-4 in the last 7 World Series. There's really no telling what will happen.

I feel bad for the Rays because they have no fans.

If the Rays win tonight I think they lose in the WS, If the Red Sox win I think they win the WS. Therefore I am rooting for the Sox tonight.

What an amazing series. If the Sox pull this off I think it's more impressive than 2004 from a strictly numbers view. It's hard to say for sure that it's over and the game still has to be played, but it just seems like if the Rays were going to bounce back it would have been tonight.

They were facing the Sox worst starter so far in the playoffs, and had a 1-0 lead at home and a 2-2 tie after 5 with their best starter going. Today though in situations they were excelling in for 2 2/3 of the games in Boston they shit the bed (the Bartlet error, and not scoring in the 8th stand out). I guess it's still possible, but it just seemed like tonight they still caught a bunch of breaks but did nothing with it. And now they have to face Lester.

yeah this was the game they should've won.

Shields is much better than Garza and Lester is much better than Beckett.

If anyone is curious, Tampa Bay was about -140 favorites for Game 6 and Boston is about a -130 favorite for Game 7 on the opening lines.

We can stop calling Shields "Big Game" James now, right? There's only 1 big game James.

Exactly my thinking. I'm not really rooting for anyone in the series, I'm just rooting that the Phillies get humiliated. Whoever gives them the best chance to lose gets my vote.

With all due respect Dev.. I find it funny that you've so obviously changed your tune to play down any expectations. The Phillies scare you?? It's going to be a long night (as said last night)??

What's with the humble schtick, that's never been you're MO?

Wow this series is really one of the best this post season. I feel bad for the baby rays though. They were so close... yet so far away from the World Series.
