Neither of them could hold a candle to Mangini.

Says alot about what you give up.

And of course, we don't know that yet. If you're wanna change coaches every 3 years for fun, might as well go after everyone.

Based on what? Mangini was nothing when he came here and nothing when he left. Doesn't seem hard to beat that.

He was the hottest coordinator out there before he was hired. We were reeling from having a creampuff head coach for the last 4 years and we were dying for someone to come in and be all Belichik-like.

I don't remember many people objecting to the Mangini hire at the time, though I'm not sure who exactly was available when Herm left.

No he wasn't, he was the hottest assistant as a DBs coach with the Pats, Saban and Romeo both tried to hire him away from the Pats to be their DC. Belichick promoted him to DC, where he did a pretty lousy job running their defense for one season. Then we 'stole' him away through Tanny's friendship connection.

And Ryan or Spagnuolo isn't the hottest now? Anyway, they were/are all just projects with no track record at all.

I do remember people on this board hailing his appointment as the Great Leap Forward for the franchise. I was one of them too, which is why I'm skeptical in bringing in anyone who has zero head coaching experience.

Though I do agree with you that the current crop of candidates available now have far more experience and potential than Mangini had.

Ryan has more experience in my opinion. They're both a gamble, but I'd put my money on Ryan in creating an awesome defense for us.

Hey, I'm with you in the skepticism. I'd rather have someone with HC experience... like, WINNING HC experience. But if we're stuck with yet another rookie, I want someone who has been dominant as a coordinator.

BTW, I was another of the people that wanted to be optimistic about Mangini. And I was feeling vindicated after 2006. Then 2007 happened, and I became skeptical. 2008... well... I began to hate the entire CS about week 12.

Yeah, I'm with you. Ryan is the only coordinator that has been dominant. I don't understand Grimm's appeal, and I think Spag's stock is a little overbought.

Damn, this is so good. As a matter of fact, it's too good. Too good to be true. This guy is gonna' end up somewhere like Detroit and completely revitalize their franchise; wherever he ends up. Him being the Jets HC makes too much sense, and I think he's gonna' tell Tannenbaum to fuck himself if Tanny tries to to impose on him how the team is gonna' be run. DAMNIT!

I like the idea, but I was also happy about Mangini

Grimm reminds me way too much of Herm's qualifications when we hired him. Not that they are similar in coaching 'style' but neither has ever been a coordinator, both were AHCs part-time as they coached elite sub-units on elite system teams... but you have to wonder if they were that good, why have they never been trusted to call a game as a coordinator? Herm ruined all assistant-coach-turned-HC candidates for me, I think.

Why does everyone want Rob Ryan so badly? He coaches for OAKLAND, he wants to coach in OAKLAND. OAKLAND has had horrendous defenses his enitre tenure, save one year of being good against the run, 2 years ago! He has the best corner in football and has aquired, nor coached up any one else into quality above average NFL talent. The last two season the Raiders defense has been abysmul. We spend so much time making fun of raider joe for the pathetic Raiders. why the hell would we want anyone on their coaching staff?

Can somebody please tell me why they so desperately want Rob from OAKLAND to be our new DC? their has been some kind of man love for him for 2 years. Rex is the real Ryan. why would we want the castoff too?

i think he'll end up here, assuming either the ravens get knocked out of the playoffs this week or tanny doesn't pull the trigger on another candidate too soon

it would be a huge mistake to hire anyone without interviewing rex

I don't see what the Broncos have that we don't outside of the almighty franchise QB of course. But we have his style defense already installed and they have an awful awful defense in complete dissarray.... I really hope we get him in here.
