You know, even though I hated the Dolphins I always liked Marino personally (great guy, has a kid with autism) and even Shula (was always classy about SB III). Looking back....how DID that team with Marino never get back to the Super Bowl ? It seemed like they made the playoffs every year or every other year....next to having a dominant team, the best way to get to the SB is to give yourself lots of chances. It seems like every year there was 1 team having a standout season that would block Miami (plus the 4 Bills SB teams). Anybody know what year after 1984 that Marino/Shula regret not going further ?
Actually, they missed the playoffs every year from 1986-89 before the Bills dynasty hit. Were the Patriots winning the AFC East back then ? I don't remember. That was Marino's window, IMO.
They likely regret 1992 the most. That year they won their first playoff game in seven years and hosted the AFC Championship Game. Marino sucked that day. He was 22 of 45 for 268 yards and 2 interceptions. The Dolphins turned the ball over 5 times in the 29-10 loss to Buffalo. Until 2011, 1992 had been my least favorite season. I hated all four Championship Game participants and the Jets were rotten.
My mentality is I want to win more than anyone but I realize how difficult it is and none of us have any control. I enjoyed the rides in '09 & '10, they were touhg ways to end the seasons but I'll tale '09 and '10 over '11 any day. Philly has been a top franchise under reid, I hope we can win as consistently as they have while adding a SB title. I think '94 was their best shot, they choked at SD and SD went on to beat Pitt the next week. I think Miami was better than Pitt that year. They would have got smoked in the SB(same thing if they made it in '92 or '85) but at least they would have made it. '86 NE won the division after we choked, '87 it was Indy and then Buf took over starting in '88.
The Jets played a big role in Miami winning the division that year, even though we were bad. They went to Buffalo and upset them the week after Dennis Byrd was injured, then went to Miami and lost that game in the final seconds, which enabled Miami to win the AFC East. Even after the 5-game losing streak to end the season, we still could have won the division had Miami beaten New England in the last MNF game, the last NFL game ever played at the Orange Bowl. As it turned out it probably didn't matter, in those days the third best division winner got a bye and went on the road in the second round, which is where we ended up anyway, but we got to host and win a playoff game instead. The Colts in 1987 traded for Eric Dickerson early in the year and the strike helped them along. I believe they lost at Cleveland in the playoffs, setting up the Cleveland-Denver AFC Championship Game rematch.
The famous Pete Carroll choke game after Stoyanovich missed a PAT. That was a SN game. If I recall correctly Dickerson's first game as a Colt came against us and yes Indy did lose to Cleveland. I remember how odd it was that Indy was in the playoffs, they were so bad for so many years.
Jeff Blake made a cameo in that game for us. I don't remember why, it was late in the year, Ken O'Brien had already been put on IR and something was wrong with Browning Nagle for a play or two. Something was wrong with him all year, actually, but they took him out for a play or two.
the only game I vividly remember Jeff Blake playing in was the finale vs. NO. that was a very cold day I think the day after Christmas. I moved up and sat 10 rows from the Jets bench and remember not being able to identify a ton of players- we were really beat up at that point in the year.
Speaking of Jets punters, I was looking for the game where Tom Tupa came in for Testaverde and threw two touchdowns, but there is nothing on youtube.
That was the very next week after then Miami game. I was there too, we ended up down by the field by the end. You're right, a lot of guys were on IR by then, it was the end of the line for O'Brien, McNeil and Hector, they never played for us again. We had like a third string RB in there and Blake played longer. In the Miami game he was in for a play or two.
are u serious ????? ok who wants to attack? EDIT - c juncs response, albeit short and sweet. this was the infamous achilles game. - the beginning of the end for both parcells and belichek tenures.
Oh yeah, I remember which game and what happened, but I wanted to go back and look at what Tupa did. I remember a few games into the Rick Mirer experiment I was thinking they should just start Tupa if not Lucas.
I don't know, I can't access youtube at work. I have the game on tape somewhere in the archives but I wouldn't know if they were available online.
I was thinking that in week 2. I did not like Mirer and considering he came in so late there was no way he would be able to run our offense.
It took too long for Parcells to make the move to Lucas, and when he did Lucas got hurt so we were stuck with Mirer for two more weeks. Tupa hit Keyshawn for a TD I think the first play after Vinny got hurt. By rule Mirer couldn't play until the 4th quarter and we were winning until he came in the game. Ended up losing on a last second FG by Adam Vinitieri.
The 13-10 OT game against Buffalo a couple years ago was probably the worst 'close' Jet football game I ever watched, although I barely remember the 6-3 game against New England I remember enough to know that was bad. Losing three straight from a 7-5 start would have been another SOJ finish if Miami wasn't awful enough to keep us around. Teams didn't make the playoffs at 8-8 every year back then :rofl2:
Like someone else said, the San Diego playoff loss was pretty bad, the year the Chargers got smoked by the Niners in the Super Bowl. They went something like 20 plus years without winning a road playoff game, and they never had good enough defenses or running games to get many home playoff games. Especially considering they weren't a patch on Buffalo's fanny with roster players #2-45 and Kelly was no slouch even compared to Marino. Actually come to think of it, their worst loss was the very next year after they made the Super Bowl, when they went down to New England in the AFC Championship, at home.
