I am sure we tried to shop him, but they knew we were gonna drop him, and teams wouldn't want his big contract, so they knew if we dropped him, they could sign him for cheaper and not give up a pick either.

I still like Patrick Ramsey and I still think he can be a solid starter in this league.

Report: Broncos sign QB Ramsey to two-year deal

    March 8, 2007

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Broncos did not take long to find a replacement for backup quarterback Jake Plummer.

The Denver Post on Thursday reported that the Broncos signed Patrick Ramsey to a two-year contract.

Ramsey's agent, Jimmy Sexton, told the Post that his client inked a two-year deal Wednesday night worth between $4 million and $5 million.

"Patrick thinks it's the right place for him," Sexton told the newspaper.

Plummer, who lost his starting job to rookie Jay Cutler late last season, announced he was retiring Sunday, one day after the Broncos traded him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ramsey, 28, was cut by the New York Jets last Friday.

Last March, the Jets acquired Ramsey from the Washington Redskins as insurance fpr starter Chad Pennington, who was coming off two shoulder operations.

Ramsey started 23 games in his first three years with the Redskins after being selected in the first round of the 2002 draft. But he lost his starting job to veteran Mark Brunell after the 2005 season opener.

In 2003, Ramsey threw for a career-high 2,166 yards and 14 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 11 starts.

Hey, he can throw the 15 yard out with zip, isn't that all that matters for beating elite defenses?

What is Ramseys deal? Is it just me or does he seem like he's always just going through the motions to collect a paycheck? He had a ton of potential coming out of college but never seemed to have the competitive drive to succeed in the NFL.

It seems like the jumped at the first opportunity he got here to be a backup. Does he even want to start?

I am sure he would like to start, but in his case he just simply isn't very good.

I agree he's not very good, but why wouldn't he try and get on a team like the Raiders or Browns where he may have a shot at competing for a starting position?

Good question, but outside of just wanting to play in the NFL, why would anyone want to play for the Raiders? Especially after last year? Maybe he could start, but he could also get killed the way they go through QB's. Cleveland I guess is a better example. Maybe he has just decided that getting paid to watch is better than working harder.

I don't know, personally I'd rather start on a bad team than sit the bench on a good one. I think you're right about him making that decision.

I agree with you... I'd rather be playing. But he'll make decent money standing around too. At least Bronco's new guy doesn't have to worry about anyone knocking for his job.

Cutler has only played 5 games. Who knows what he'll do, maybe he's an injury prone type, you never know. It's not like Ramsey went to Indianapolis to be the backup.
