no their job description is to stop the WR from catching the ball.
29 attempts, 4.97 YPA, 62.07 Forced INC%, 0 TDs, 1 INT that's Aomugha's line he allowed 144 yards receiving for the entire season.

Ronde BArber by comparison: 71 attempts, 10.48 YPA, 19.72 Forced INC%, 6 TDs, 4 INTs
who was better the guy with 4 INTs who gave up over 700 yards and 80% completions but had 4 INTs or the guy who allowed 9 receptions all year

Clement's deal ruined the market on CBs and got the Niners all of 2 INTs and 9 passes defended last year. Compare to Asomugha's stats of 1 INT and 9 passes defended and the best you can deduce about the Raiders is that they still over-payed $3.5 million, and that's if you even consider Clements' deal to actually be worth it (it's not). Smoot compiled 1 INT and 7 passes defended this year and is currently playing for a team with the only owner who loves to overpay free agents more than Al Davis. Find some better examples here.

As for the general argument, you don't pay 10% for a player who will only get about 8-10 chances per game to even touch the ball, let alone control it. Asomugha is the best corner in the league, but no corner is worth that much.

Roger Wehrli, CB, St Louis Cardinals has the fewest career interceptions of any Hall of Fame Defensive Back with 40. Aso is on pace for about 20. Your arguments are that Ints don't matter. Well, according to the NFL, they do.

I'm not hating on Asomugha. I'm simply pointing out three things. One, he is wildly overpaid. Two, he is not the great cornerback most of you have already anointed him to be...And three, that your theory that a Franchise CB is more important then a Franchise QB or RB is the dumbest god damn thing this board has ever seen, not including RaiderJoe posts.

Now, I understand the inflation of contracts. I get that. If Revis were a FA right now, he'd probably pull in something around 7 for $75mil. I get that. What I don't get is how ANYBODY can sit here and TRY to justify this as logical or even acceptable. That's like saying it's ok for the Colts to give Payton Manning a 5 for $125mil contract. It's insanity.

    ***Edit***
And AGAIN, the Raiders had the 31st ranked Run Defense in the NFL. Wait till they start picking on Asomugha more and see how well he handles it. The guy hasn't proven shit yet. Wait and see how it ends up. My personal prediction is that his career will end up being good, not great.

No, you're just stupid. Where did I say a CB was more important than a "Franchise QB"? Can you read?

I said Asomugha is more important than any RB currently playing.

Your need to reply to every single post in this thread when you know absolutely nothing about the subject is astonishing.

Madden has ruined everything right about football. I suggest you stop playing so heavily.

Asomugha was already picked on a lot back in 2006 where he had 8 INT and 19 PD. After that teams knew he was the real deal and now hardly throw his away. Asomugha is the best CB in the league for a reason.

The CBs that usually are near the top in interceptions are:
1)CBs that gamble and have the ability to jump routes.
2)CBs that are targeted a lot.
3)CBs with good hands that make the catch when given the opportunity.

    It's usually a combination.

Asante Samuel is one of the better ones we've seen at jumping routes, but he does get beaten badly because he gambles. Champ Bailey, a few years ago in his prime, was excellent at jumping routes without really giving up too much in terms of big plays.

[SyracuseJet] You guys are so stupid and are making the worst arguments ever and you're like RaiderJoe lol.

Deltha O'Neal was way better than Aso mugha is and O'Neal never got close to this contract! Look at the numbers. He had 10 interceptions in 2005. That's right. 10. Did Al Davis give him $15 million a year lol? No! He also had 9 another year and he has 34 in his career! He's way better than Aso mugha. This Oakland Raiders guy has only 10 in his career. O'Neal had that many in one season.

I feel like banging my head against the wall you people are making no sense at all. Stop being on Asomugha's cock! You must like the Raiders.

His job is to get interceptions and he doesn't do that.

Also he's just a cornerback and cornerback can't do much. You can play away from cornerbacks. You can't play away from a god like Adrian Peterson or LT. They're awesome! They control the whole offense and the defense is left powerless. Only gods like Adrian Peterson or LT or a Franchise QB should get big dollars like this. Ha, I'll take a 2000 yard RB and you're stuck with a silly cornerback who can't affect the game. I'll take that trade. Show me a cornerback that gets 2000 yards and maybe we'll talk.

Al Davis is such an idiot and a bad excuse for an NFL owner. He should be shot. [/SyracuseJet]

Obviously, the only way cornerbacks affect the game is to get interceptions so you can get points on Madden. Otherwise, what stats are they putting up?

Is that the best retort you had? Mimicking what I’ve said? Honestly, that’s it? You couldn’t counter anything I said. Probably because it’s true and you really hate to accept it. I make an argument, and you make an attack. That’s all you have to offer? Quit while your ahead champ.

Every weak, little, idiotic thing you've said has been countered...

You're so far off the mark.

We've been ahead this whole time - you're the one that won't accept it.

This thread shows how little you know about football. You make the most casual fan look like a football genius.

    It's so sad.

Are you really going to site on a Jets fan site and compare dicks? If you're so knowledgeable, why aren't you working for them rather then talking about them like the rest of us? At this point, I?d settle for a Madden education over the ignorant shit you two have been vomiting. Keep listening to ESPN the Radio, you?re well on your way to that ESPN U Degree.

I bet your next line is going to be "your an idiot."

    I can't wait.

Your reading comprehension skills are severely lacking if all you saw is an "attack" and "mimicking". I made points in there. I strongly suggest you learn how to read. After you do that, maybe you can read up on this game of football we're discussing here.

It would also help you avoid claiming that I said things like "Nnamdi Asomugha is more important than a Franchise QB." You know, reading and understanding the words of others.

Just for comparison, let's look at another team whose best player touches the ball 8-10 times a game.

The Detroit Lions best player is Calvin Johnson. On average he gets the ball thrown to him 8-10 times a game. To contrast Asomugha gets the ball at and around him much less. The Lions went 0-16 with Johnson intended to control the ball with those throws. Asomugha gets the chance to tip the ball just a few times.

Even if you're taking the best receiver out of the game you're still vulnerable to every other receiving option. By paying Asomugha this much you're much on one guy you're limiting how much you can spend to control other threats. The pass rush is more important than the coverage. Your offense is more important that your defense in terms of scoring points. You can't bank on picks to set up your team on every drive and limiting your ability to sign other positions severely effects your ability to build a quality defense. No one position can shoulder the entire work load of the defense, and certainly no defense can shoulder the entire load of the whole team. It'll only get you so far, and defensive backs will get you much less. If Asomugha can return punts and kicks and maybe play offense this money might be warranted (he might also have to coach). As it stands now, this is simply ridiculous.

Al Davis either thinks he's a baseball GM, or thinks he's casting for a major motion picture. Can Obama nationalize the Raiders, that would be better spent as bailout money.

I'm sorry but I gotta disagree.

You'd rather have 1 guy shut-down his half of the field, or in this guy's case, he usually shadows the #1 wideout.

Than having a running back who can control the game, control the ball, and control the clock? Even if he is facing 8 man fronts?

The offense can still throw away from Asomugha, which teams have clearly done to Oakland...

I'll take ball control any day of the week over 1 guy who rarely gets thrown at.

Don't bother. I already made that point, but apparently we're not as smart Yisman when it comes to these things.

this is a problem simply because revis will be a free agent in a few years and this has definitely pushed up the pay rate for cbs in the league. if i read it correctly he would get the same amount in year 3 as a franchised qb. thats avg of the top 5 qbs in the league.

sure he is great but he is not top 5 qb money great. it will severely hamper the raiders or they will have him for 2 years. either way i dont see this as a win for the raiders team. i also dont see this as a win for the jets.... unless the agents simply forget about this contract it will help to dictate cb pay for the next few years. including a free agent class that will directly affect the jets.

running backs are extremely overrated in their value to their team. Time and time again, it has been proven that giving a lot of guaranteed money to a running back is idiotic. Their primes are shorter, they're highly prone to injury, and they are extremely dependent on their offensive lines.

If I was running a team, I'd take a RB every few seasons in the second or third rounds, and put very little money into the position. I wouldn't sign or trade for RBs or draft any in the first round. The offensive line and continuity along the offensive line, are the keys to the running game. Obviously not all running backs are the same, but history has shown that it's simply not worth it to give running backs big contracts. Edgerrin James, Shaun Alexander, LaDainian Tomlinson, etc. Ever notice how often big name running backs fall off the map?

So if you're asking me who I'd rather give that contract to, I'm choosing Asomugha every time over AD.

    And once again. I disagree.

Edge James, that was his fault for leaving Indy, sure he got more money, but he wasn't going to be "falling off the map" in Indy.

Must be nice though from Tomlinson to have 7 straight great seasons, and his "fall off map" year was over 1500 total yards and 11 TDs. We know RBs break down, oh well.

But AD to Asomugha...If you're asking me who I'd rather give the contract to, I'm choosing AD every time over Asomugha.
