Actually, jeaux already announced it in a thread that is aptly titled: Raiders sign P Shane Lechler to 4 year extension
Was that actually reported somewhere or are you a cap guru? Since when does a voidable year that both sides agree to result in a cap hit? I have to admit, this thread is a lot more fun than the "Nnamdi got fed up and left Oakland" thread you were all anticipating!...
Yes, it was. The original article which has now been updated at least three times said he could walk after two years and 26 million in guaranteed money. Now it says he can walk if they don't pay him 45 million over 3 years in guaranteed money. I'll post it this time before it changes again. "Nnamdi Asomugha and the Oakland Raiders agreed to terms on a six-year contract that will bring the All-Pro cornerback $28.5 million guaranteed over the next two years, a source familiar with the negotiations said today. Agent Tom Condon forwarded the proposed contract to the NFL's Management Council this morning, which the council approved. Asomugha's contract voids after the second season unless the Raiders pay him $16.8 million for 2011 or the franchise tag for a quarterback, whichever is higher. That requires a basic 2nd grade math skill. If the contract is for 6 years, which it said in the original article that it was (not mentioned now but that will become available soon) and the guarantee is at least 28 million, well that would be amortized over 6 years. However, if he leaves after two then all of the unamortized part of that 28 million hits in the third year. Easy enough to figure out that would be 18 million..a little more actually.
This is what the article says right now. So the third year isn't guaranteed money but if they want to keep him year three, essentially they'll be paying him at least $45.3 million over the next 3 years. It doesn't sound like there would be a cap hit (For the third year) if they chose not to retain him after the second year, but without the details it's impossible to say for sure. The term "VOID" makes me believe that's almost certainly the case though. I think the guaranteed money could also be spread across multiple years if they wanted to.
Haha..now it's back to what it said this morning when I made the original post and yes the guaranteed money would be amortized ovber the 6 years. The problem is if he walks after 2. All of that unamortized money would hit in the third year.
Do you pay attention to the NFL? He's the best corner in the game...by far. Sure, they gave him a shitload of money, but if they didn't sign him to a long term deal today, he would've walked.
Exactly. There is nothing but spin and reading waaay between the lines to suggest that there is any cap hit for voiding after year two.
Uh..no...the cap hit is what it is. The NFL rules are very clear on that, there is no room for interpretation. If somebody is given guaranteed money and doesn't stay on the team for the full length of the contract then the remaining unamortized money all hits in the year that he is cut, traded, retires or leaves for any other reason whatsoever. (actually, I'm not sure what happens if he is dead but that is probably covered too otherwise there would have probably been a lot of NFL players dieing young)
Who cares how good he is? There isn't a CB in the history of the NFL worth that kind of money. If there was then Sanders would have to be getting paid about 30 million a year right now. The highest QB in the league barely makes that.
So this seemingly significant detail has been missed by Adam Schefter, John Clayton, et al, but Don from the Jet board has picked up on it? Forgive my skepticism.
It hasn't been missed by anyone. There is no need to mention it, everybody knows the rules..presumably everybody. Oh, and don't expect everybody on this board to pick up on anything. Half of them don't know the difference between a football and a hockey puck.
The best CB in the league got payed like the best pass rusher in the league. He's worth the moniker but not $14.25million/year.
