Still holds the franchise records for receiving yards and touchdowns. Lifetime average of 18.7 yards per catch. Incredible player. Was a privilege to have seen him play for my team. RIP # 13
All hail Don Maynard. Made one of the great catches in team history ('68 Title Game). If he was able to wear the catching gloves receivers wear now, he'd have never dropped a ball, and maybe have only needed one hand. Rest In Peace Mr. Maynard.
RIP Don Maynard, when you played you took hits every game and still held on to those balls thrown by Joe, you played at a time when receivers had to beat the man covering them and catch the ball on the run. Receivers like you made a lot of yards for QBs like Joe, Lamonica, and Dawson. Your two late game catches in the AFL title game against the Raiders will never be forgotten.
Me too, obviously (check out the avatar). With Dave deBusschere (hence the 22 in my user name) and Bud Harrelson, one of the three favorite athletes of my youth. Never wore a chin strap, and always had the single bar facemask, so you could actually see his face on the field. First man to reach 10,000 yards receiving in his career. RIP to a truly great (and relatively underappreciated) receiver.
Through the SB season Maynard and Namath were the best QB-WR combo of all time. That was over 4 seasons. RIP.
He was the 1st player signed by the Jets (then Titans). Namath and Maynard changed the way the game was played.
He was one of my favorite receivers. He is clearly the Jet's best WR ever! I wish he had a chance to see the Jets win one more big one! Rest in peace Don.
Don't post on here much anymore due to work but wanted to put my respects for Don in writing . As per my username he was my hero as I never saw him play live , but from recordings , readings and meeting him he was a humble, tough and skilled player. He was a team first guy who was everything a winning team needs to get to that No1 spot. I am sad he passed but glad he got to see his number retired and gain some recognition from the modern Jets audience for his performances for us. RIP Don... you truly were my hero.
OMG time is marching on!! RIP To Don M who made one teenage kids day Super special in 1969!!! Did anyone here see one of his interviews? He said when he would talk to Namath he would call him "Joseph"..like in "have a look out for me Joseph ..I can beat this guy long" Supposedly was the exact opposite of Willie Joe...not flashy , saved every penny, and even wore the same coat or jacket year after year Prayers to Maynard family :/ and a big thank you Those suckers the Johnsons better enshrine in ROH and have ceremony etc Other poster who said logo of DM on jerseys sounds like great idea
Jets-Raiders 1968 AFC Championship Game.....Goto the 18 minute mark and you can see the 52-yard catch by Maynard and then his 12-yard TD. BTW, Maynard fumbled out of bounds. J Look at the field (Shea Stadium) -- Old School Football ! A very young Pat Summerall at the open.
