I am very aware that the Giants have been in the NFL a long time and won championships prior to what became known as the Super Bowl. There are a lot of storied teams but the majority of fans can only relate to what has occurred in their lifetime. Since you posed your question to a board that is about an AFC team that has it's roots in the AFL, I would expect it to reflect on the era in which the NFL and AFL interacted on the playing field. I'm sure other teams took the same attitude of whose been here longer when the Giants became an expansion team in 1925. Yes I am aware of the Chargers intentions. Do I think that he sniveled at the draft? Absolutely. It's my opinion but Peyton > Archie > Eli. If you think he is the second coming of Johnny Unitas so be it. I appreciate your opinion but I don't have to concur. Do you know how many cops have shot themselves in the manner that Burress did? More than they would like to admit. All law enforcement officers have gone through extensive training. An accidental discharge of a firearm is just that, accidental. NY gun laws are in the top five for absurdity in the nation and have done nothing to reduce the amount of murders that take place in the state. The laws have actually encouraged citizens fearful of their safety to illegally obtain handguns. Those who want to commit murder do not need a gun. If Bloomberg has his way maybe knives will be next on his hit list and New Yorkers can eat their steaks pureed. Did Burress deserve some sort of punishment? Yes, but not what he was sentenced. To assume that every player is going to know what to do in every situation is not the responsibility of a team, but guidance and help before a detrimental situation arises occurs all the time in all sports. The Giants took the wrong approach to the initial problems. This resulted in someone being fearful due to the number of athletes killed in public places and hence committing a crime. Many Giants fan acted with hatred towards Burress prior to the gun discharge and it just added to the problems. In closing thanks for being civil, since what I originally wrote was pretty tame concerning the question you presented.
I'm not going to bother maintaining the heretofore established tone because there's not much point in it. You also didn't really answer what I set forth. I see the points you're making, but they serve to complicate the issue more than anything else. NYC gun laws are crazy, but that's a separate issue entirely. Many cops do injure themselves by accidentally discharging their firearms, but that's a separate issue entirely. Eli's merits as a QB are easily debatable when you compare him to his immediate family, but that's a separate issue entirely. I don't really know what you're trying to get at here. What would you have the Giants do differently? And how could they have kept Burress from signing his own jail sentence in turning down a DA plea bargain? I get you don't like the team, I do. But I still have no idea why you answer the question "why" the way you do. In closing...testicles. That is all.
As you can see from my screen name, I wouldn't be a huge fan of the Giants. But that doesn't mean I hate them either. I like Mario Manningham and Steve Smith.
No I do not hate the Giants. I would never root for them to lose, I actually like them, but of course the Jets are my team.
I grew up in Giants family. Til this day I still remember Mark Bavaro. I cheered for the Giants when they beat the patsies in the Superbowl.
As a Jets fan growing up in the NY/NJ area I hated the Giants almost as much as I hated the Dolphins. I just knew too many Giants fans to have anything other then hate for them. Since i have gotten older and moved out of the area I can't say I really hate them anymore but I also can't say I like them. I have never rooted for them to win a game in my life and I don't see that changing anytime soon either. I must say I really like this Giants team, at least compared to the late 90s early 00s team. They are a likeable team with guys like Manning, Jacobs, Osi, Tuck all of which are likeable guys compared to the Barbers, Shockeys & Stahans of years past. Still when I watch them I can't help but hope that they lose and I'm not really sure why.
My next door Neighbor worked for CBS and took me to my first football game at Yankee stadium when I was 5. I never got into it because I was to young but enjoyed going with the adults to the big stadium. I got into the Jets because of Namath and the publicity and started watching them on TV. AFL football was just more fun to watch when I was a teenager and could start to understand the game. Seemed like much more action and it sucked me in. I like the Giants love the Jets.
Whilst I live and breath Jets I always find myself pulling for the Giants when they are playing and can only relate this to the fact that I love New York and the people who live there. Whilst I'm also a big Yanks fan I always pull for the Mets too when they are playing. Having been many times to New York, my experience is that most New Yorkers would certainly pull for their own before other state teams. Just my experience.
New here. My thoughts on the Giants are I wont hate them once Eli retires. Can't stand the guy. Pierce too. The rest of them are alright in my book, but I will never root for Sheli Manning as long as I'm a football fan. What a gigantic baby. He's an average quarterback who gets way too much credit for doing the things a decent quarterback is supposed to do because his name is Manning.
By the way, could anything be more boring than Giants football these coming weeks? And it's going to be forcefed to us...KC..Oakland..Denver..Oh lord shoot me. I really hope some of those games have an alternative game playing, or else I might just shoot myself in the eyeballs.
I don't have any hate for the Giants, but I don't find myself caring either way if they win or lose. I didn't care either way when they went to the SB against the Ravens. I rooted for them against the Pats, but only because I was rooting against the Pats. As far as fans go, I have never really liked Giants fans, because I grew up in Jersey and had to deal with a ton of people that jumped from the misery of the Jets to the Parcells bandwagon when they were winning in the 80s. I have relatives and long-time family friends that are Giants fans and we avoid talking football because it almost always ends up in fists being thrown. I know there are level-headed and decent Giants fans out there, but I haven't met many.
I hate em! We have a lineage of Jet fans in our family and the hatred for the Giants was just ingrained into me at a very young age. During my span of Jet fandom (I'm 29), the Jets have had basically no success not even a trip to the Super Bowl. In all honesty my hatred derives from Jealousy and the fact that for the past 22 years of going to Jet games I know we're driving to Giants freakin Stadium. If the Giants are playing a division rival I without a doubt root for the Giants. I was going crazier then most Giant fans when they beat the Patsies in the SB. The hate for a rival such as the Dolphins or Patriots is much different then my hate for the Giants. I don't wish them harm or anything like that, but I love when they lose and when they had losing records. Just my 2 cents.
I used to really hate the Giants about 20 years ago. Although I did like a few players like Simms, Joe Morris, Mark Bavaro. These days I don't really hate them anymore, I hope they win as long as it does not include beating the Jets. I don't wish them any ill will like in the past.
There's no real rivalry here, so I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to the Giants, that said, I got a little jealous when they beat the Pats a couple of years ago. Although it was fantastic to see that douchebag Brady not win another ring, when I was observing my Giant fan friends all I could think of is When Is It Gonna Happen For Us??? When's our moment? I want that feeling of basking in the afterglow of a SB Championship. Jets first and foremost, then the Giants a distant, distant second. The teams I hate are the obvious: Dolphins, Pats and Bills. Dolphins always number 1 because that's the team that destroyed us numerous times when I was a kid. I have to admit, I don't like the Cowboys. I just hate Tony Romo. What a bitch! All that crying in the 4th quarter vs. the Giants in the playoffs 2 years ago really turned me off.
I rooted for the Giants for 4 hours when they destroyed the Patriots perfect season. I will always remember them for those 4 hours of absolute bliss, but after that, I am not a fan, and never will be. I can't say that I hate the Giants, though, I just don't follow them and don't care whether they win or lose.
I don't mind the Giants and want them to do well. I really hate the Cowboys. They are a lot easier to pull for without Barber, Shockey and Strahan. If a Giant fans wants to talk smack, this all goes out the window of course.
This is one thing that actually hasn't come up as much as I thought it would. I know Eli, for reasons I honestly can't figure out, draws a lot of hate, but it isn't accurate to also question his talent. I know people hate him for the draft day stuff but that wasn't all his doing and it was five years ago. Some people probably hate Eli for that more than Chargers' players do. And here's just one little quote for anyone who likes to play the "Eli is an average QB and if his last name was Jones he wouldn't even be in the league" argument. "*Eli Manning is second in the NFC and third in the NFL with a 104.1 passer rating. Manning has completed 59 of 91 passes (64.8 percent) for 747 yards, five touchdowns and only one interception in the Giants' 3-0 start. He leads all NFL quarterbacks in third-down passer rating (140.6) and is tied with Denver's Kyle Orton for first in fourth-quarter passer rating (137.5)." This is from Giants.com and here is the link http://www.giants.com/news/headlines/story.asp?story_id=42371 I know not everyone likes him, but don't let that blind you from the fact that he is a pretty darn good QB (though I will admit that, save for recently, he's been prone to the occasional head-scratcher).
