He's a system qb, but if Geno will be healthy soon, why sign a qb?

We really don't need ANY new QB on the team. Think about it.

The season can start today and we're set at starting QB (Fitz). Geno comes back from injury and is chomping at the bit to continue his development, pushing Fitz (competition from the bench, a good thing).

The ONLY reason you'd drop a valuable draft pic is if Fitz goes down before Geno gets back. What's that? like at the most 2-4 game window that Petty would have to cover? Yes, we lose those 2-4 games. We'd probably lose at least half of them anyway even if we did bring a scrub QB in off the street to cover for us.

So in reality we're only talking about a 1-2 game swing on the season in the WORST CASE SCENARIO (0-4 with Petty vs 2-2 with scrub, or 0-2 with Petty vs 1-1 with scrub). Is a 1-2 game swing in THIS season worthy of dropping a 3/4 round draft pick? I don't think so.

The time to panic and do this is if Fitz gets hurt AFTER Geno comes back and we need a 2nd QB for the rest of the season. Not just a few games early.

I wouldn't bring anyone in at this point.

Edit: I might look at 2-3 QBs at this point so IF we need one later in the season we can just pull the trigger and get on with it.

easy- they need someone to take some reps.

Right now its essentially Fitzpatrick and Petty taking all the reps. If there was a real game tomorrow Fitzpatrick would be the only viable option to take the snaps so you both want to keep him healthy and not wear him out. He'll get all the practice reps with the 1s but you don't want him taking any practice reps with the 2s at all. That means in the preseason game he is taking very few snaps. You don't want Petty playing all the rest of the game like he did last night. Since he's not ready at all it stunts the growth of the 2s and makes it hard to evaluate them. Plus you'll wear Petty out taking all the backup practice reps and playing most of the preseason.

You bring in a Flynn to spilt time with the 2s & 3s with Petty, taking some pressure off him, the original plan. Maybe Flynn surprises you and you keep him on as a backup. Maybe not, and you cut him as soon as Smith is ready. Either way no loss and its good for the team. Week 1 if Geno Smith isn't ready you can't go into the game with Fitzpatrick and Petty only anyway so you might as well hedge your bets while you can with the expanded roster and get a guy like Flynn ready

Never would have expected this from such a classy organization.

(It's KIND OF funny though, reminds me of the Mike Tyson Punchout ringtone during Bowles' presser when he announced Geno got punched in the face)

Anyone watch preseason games tonight? Mettenberger was absolutely outstanding, people are buzzing about him. He's impressive; huge arm, good pocket presence, accurate. If we're looking to bring in an insurance option behind Fitz I would definitely explore a trade. The Titans just made a huge investment in the position already and I think Mettenberger can be a good starter.

I was really impressed with mettenberger in the pre season game today. You could tell the coaches has mode faith in him based on the playcalls they were making, mariota was getting plays called like he was geno smith circa 2014.

the interception he threw was not a terrible throw the WR should have fought a little harder for it, looks great in the pocket went through reads.

If we are going to make a play for someone it should be him. I just dont know what it would take, the issue is that if they do sign him and geno comes back we would be in trouble as we cant really get rid of geno or petty and it would be unwise to let fitz go since his vet presence is needed....

I would have a bad feeling if buffalo got him though i think he would make them legit.

Couldn't agree more with this...he looks so in control in the pocket...like Pennington used to look

So wait, you're saying you'd rather have Zach Mettenberger than Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans, Dakota Dozier and Jeremiah George?

    You crazy.

    He's not an insurance policy.

    He's your franchise QB.

    Fuck you John Idzik.

I know he has the potential to be a franchise QB long term but the "insurance option" was more of an immediate evalutation. It's August 14th so it's unrealistic that he would be able to come in and learn the offense in time to win the starting job, but he'd be a good guy to have behind Fitz and he would probably be prepped to play by the Week 5 bye if things are getting out of hand.

He has a lot of traits that I think would make him a viable option as a long term starter, I'd be worried if Mac isn't at least making a call to gauge what the price point would be.

Wasn't Flynn coming off of injuries at NEP and was unable to play at 100%. The thing with him though is that he keeps getting signed and then losing jobs in training camp. But when he actually gets into a regular season game he's played ok (with the Pack). I guess GB took Tolzien over him.

Flynn Sucks, and he had a contingent of would be admirers on this board, when they wanted wat IDzik did, done.

I agree but I don't look at him as "insurance".

He's more than insurance as he could be the answer. Of course he couldn't step in right away but I'm not getting him to be a back up.

I'm acquiring him to be the future.

If Fitz goes down, you play Petty with a straight face, and enter the Cardale Jones sweepstakes.

We're not trading for anybody. The guy we shoulda traded for was Foles when Chip Kelly first took over and they valued him less than that usc guy I can't even remember his name now cuz he sucks
