With Sedrick Ellis's stock rising, I expect him to be in the mix in the first 6, too. What that means is with Chris Long, Jake Long , McFadden, Gholston, Glenn Dorsey, and Sedrick Ellis in the mix; you can even throw in Matt Ryan and maybe Clady; there will definitely be somebody good who will fall to us. If it is Gholston great, but I could live with other picks, too. Just not Ryan.
I agree it was a completely meaningless game, but that's the way it fell. I think we will still be OK.
Not everyone on these boards are cowards... People do get things wrong, but I highly doubt this is one of those times. We'll see...
Exactly. Hell, BT spent most of last season making up for our ILB's lack of coverage skills....why not just draft a coverage ILB and have Gholston and Harris as the main guys who attack the line of scrimmage? Harris is great at doing that stuff from the ILB position, and looks like he has the potential to be a better version of the 49ers Brandon Moore. It's not like Gholston's lack of great coverage skills is an uncommon problem for DE/OLB prospects...I'm pretty sure Ware is the only one who actually got praised for his coverage potential in his draft scouting reports. The coverage issue will exist for anyone in this draft...Groves...Crable...Gholston...Robertson...Avril (who is about as good as Gholston)...Ellis...Merling...none of these guys is going to excel in coverage when they get in the league. I think people forget this when scouting prospects, they put way too much weight in negatives. When a coach sees a player he doesn't think "this guy doesn't have this or that" he's thinking "what could this guy do for my team?" If what he can do fits the team and their need, and the player is good enough at doing it, then they'll find a way to use him.
That is all very true. My main concern with Gholston is not his skill, and what he can do for our team in specific. I have no doubt that if we were to bring him in solely for pass rushing purpose, he would surely excell. My concern is that I dont think that Gholston is the appropiate player to be had at our selection. I think that we obviously need to fill a lot of key spots on this team, and we need to find a guy that will have the most production overall for us. I dont feel Gholston is that guy who would help make an impact like some other players would in this draft. I think he has to many concerns that come with him, and we would find better value by trading down. I personally only feel that Chris Long or Sedrick Ellis are worthy enough to be selected at #6, but I have been wrong before. Either way, I trust our FO to make the best move on draft day. If they feel Gholston is our guy, then I will support that, but I highly doubt they will.
Gholston has John Abraham written all over him. After reading that article I question his love for the game, and his ability and desire to cover. I remember a media member asking Boomer Esiason when he knew David Klingler was going to be a bust and Boomer said "The first day of camp when all the guys go out in groups for lunch and Klingler sat alone in his car and ate". There is an awful lot to being a great teamate that helps make you better. The talking to teamates and working together on the side makes all the difference in this league.
