I actually thought all 3 QBs looked decent. Petty fired a perfect 25 yard pass that went thru Miles White's hands in the 4th Quarter when White was behind coverage. Drops WERE a much bigger problem than QB play last nite.

I just it watched it again. If people think that Hack didn't read what was in front of him they're wrong. If people think that he locked on to his intended receiver from the start every time they're wrong again. The idea that the passes were dictated before hand to a specific receiver in the huddle before the play is fucking ridiculous.
They rushed for hardly any yards, and the cast around him was lacking, to say the least. Granted the game plan plan was limited. But Hack ran the plays with poise and confidence. His throws were good, some were excellent, and he can slide around the pocket a little, and make good throws while doing so.
People taking out of that that Hack locks on to his receiver every time and that he can't read a defense is a reach as far as I'm concerned. I think they're gonna be proven wrong about that specifically.
I don't know what he's gonna be ultimately. But every step of the way we're gonna hear that the kid is incompetent bum from a few people. First it was he couldn't actually throw the ball. Now it's this shit. We'll see.

Sanchez did have a strong arm, actually. His accuracy and staring down receivers was his big problem.

I agree with this. However, even IF the reads were predetermined, how are people trying to knock him for following the play design and throwing to open guys?? It's one thing if his first read was consistently covered and he was locking in and taking sacks. However, if the first read is there, why would he move on? People make no sense sometimes.

I just think some fans have an overexaggerated obsession with "going through progressions" (especially with young QBs) that they fail to realize that the majority of plays wind up going to the first read (it's the first read for a reason), and that being decisive in throwing to an open guy is just as important as being able to move away from a covered guy.

I agree. I said the same thing a while back. But it was too big a concept I guess.

The throw to #16 for the first 1st down; there were 4 wide and he picked the right guy and threw a perfect bullet on the slant. How can somebody read something negative into that? Too unbelievable that Hack could be doing that at the line scrimmage for some people. There were a bunch of plays like that.

That slant to Harper at the end of the first was a big time throw. Not one every qb makes. Right on time in the right spot.
This was the same offense the patriots use. Keep completing passes and the d will eventually make a mistake. Unfortunately, we kept making the mistakes.

The Patriots offense is predicated on the fact that 2 completions of 5 yards gets you a first down if you don't fuck it up with penalties and drops. As a young team, we are going to commit lots of penalties and drops, so it's a questionable offensive philosophy to adopt in my opinion.

    This is actually funny.
The same dubmasses who proclaimed Hack is busy before he played a snap now saying he is nothing special.....
Because all he did was completed his passes and took what D gave him.

This thread is #1 exhibit in "SOJF=seeker of misery" category.

What is tbrunner for $100, final answer?

If your logic is mistakes are bound to happen, then you should want shorter plays so that there is less opportunity to commit a mistake.

With your logic, you should want 5 yards passes - because those take 2-3 sec while a long route would take 5-7 seconds. Less time = less opportunity.

So even by your logic you should want the NE style offense :)

He made some other nice plays also.
The only ball he threw up for grabs was the one that was deflected. There were plays that were longer passes also but they didn't click. And he threw passes away efficiently. The O was not strictly designed for Hack to throw dinks in front of him. If he was throwing to Anderson downfield he might've had a better window. 16 is not exactly a starting WR.

The O has has a long long way to go. So does Hack. So if McCown takes the initial beating maybe it'll be better.

Wish we were further along with the O and it's overall development tho. That was not a great supporting cast, and they're still trying to figure out who is actually even starting at OL o_O

Hack IMO has superior arm talent in comparison to Sanchez and a quicker release. It's early, but I haven't seen a qb with that arm talent on the Jets since Favre.

I don't know what the game plan for him was, but to answer your question, a good reason why you would look past your first read is to see if there's an even better option available - assuming you have the time and protection, which surprisingly he seemed to have quite a bit. Of course, maybe he was told "If the first read is open, hit him, don't get too cute". I agree that most reports from last year - even up until now - said he was horrible in his short passing, so by that measurement this game was a major stepping stone. I'll happily eat crow if Macc turns out to have been right, and he becomes the Jets FQB, but there's a long road ahead.

We'll see regarding Hack in the coming weeks. I don't think it would be frustrating at all to watch a 2nd round pick who was "red shirted" if we had a quality starting QB who was older, and Hack was being groomed for the future. I'm sure that the Jets are not the first team to "red shirt" a young QB and take him through steps to develop him. The difference is that most of that happens behind the scenes and because the team has a quality starter, there's not the pressure on the young QB.

I get that you're frustrated, and rightfully so, but being impatient with Hack doesn't help anything. It is what it is, and we just have to hope that the Jets are doing the right things with Hack and he will develop. He's only 22.

They never would have drafted Mahomes or Watson. That's just unrealistic. You take a QB in the 1st round, then you either immediately start him, or he's the guy you're grooming for the future, not the 2nd round QB they took the year before. To do so would have meant that they were giving up on Hack. They were high on Hack's potential, so they weren't about to give up on him after one season, especially since the Jets didn't have a QB Coach or OC worth a damn and a HC who had no clue how to develop a young QB.

Sanchez's arm was ok, but it wasn't "strong" imo. His arm in no way compares with Hack's.

Okay - maybe I overreacted a little. He doesn't look quite as bad as I first thought he did. [I looked at the clips about 3 times now.]

Keeping his head fixated on the playing side is still visible all over, and is a serious problem. That said, I could still see him going through the progression - only that happened on the half of the field, but that's better than anything we had before, so that's a progress.

Another thing I should mention is, his footwork is much improved. He looked like he was throwing purely from his arm strength, when I looked at him last year. This year, I see him flexing his knees, and the torque from the feet goes through the posterior chain into crisp zip. That's a nice change.

A few killer drops killed a handful of drives - but not all is bad. I still think he's one full year away. [I still think Hack is not familiar with the plays or the timing. Or - that was how I was taught.]

I'm looking for more than a ray of hope. Hack did nothing to stop the chatter of him being a competent QB. When you draft someone in the 2nd round you expect a lot. So if he doesn't force himself into the starting position THIS year then the whole rebuild/tank will be in continuing for the next 3 years. They will have to take another QB next year. Get another QB whisper next year and find another offensive system to run. At that point you will also have a new coaching staff.

That is also the problem with Macc.. He's overly invested in Hack and it might mess up the Jets for years. You should take a QB every year until you find one but he is so bent on making Hack the guy. Even if you have two you unload one for picks. It continues to build your team. It made even more sense because Hack is not progressing enough.
