If that were the case we would have traded up for a punt returner in the first round rather than the best CB in the draft, and we would have taken a kicker in the second round rather than the second best ILB in the draft.

Also, we wouldn't have 21 of 22 starters returning following a draft where we took 10 players, 9 of which made the team, 8 which played significant roles, and 4 that were full time starters.

There is no debating that the first trade up was solid. The guy we wanted would have gone with the next pick, and we got good value. The second trade up can be debated. While we got the right value, I think we could have had 2 potential starters in the 2nd and 3rd. The jury is out on this trade.

Day 2... Wow, we missed out on a 5th and 6th round pick. If we had 4 picks on day 2, it's unlikely they would have all made the team anyway. The guys we ended up getting were great value where we got them, and are likely to make the team. Training camp fodder (see day 2 of the Pats and Panthers drafts) can be had in UDFA.

Bradway and Herm brought us Moss, Thomas, Robertson, Vilma, and Jolley/Nugent in the first round over 5 years.

Tangini has brought us Ferguson, Mangold, and Revis in the first round over 2 years. All of them were arguably the best player at their position available in the draft.

Every unit on this team, accross the board, both starters and depth, is better off than it was just over a year ago.

Signed a very big baseball contract a while ago, and it said if he goes to football he pays back ALL the bonus. He asked for that clause.

If he didn't do that, he would have went the first day.

ALL TEAMS work fast.. some having agreements in place before the 7th round is over. However, some announce later than others.

    Edgar Jones
    Height: 6-3
Weight: 262 Position: Defensive End/Outside Linebacker
    College: Southeast Missouri State

    OVERVIEW
Jones is an emerging talent whose pass rushing skills gained him national notice in 2006, as he led the nation in sacks. Under the new coaching staff, Jones was allowed to freelance as a senior, providing professional scouts with an opportunity to see him in a variety of roles. With his ability to explode off the edge and play a stand-up position, Jones could also see action as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment.

Jones was a talented athlete at Rayville High School. In football, he was a two-time all-state selection as a defensive end and tight end. In all four of his seasons with the varsity, he garnered all-district honors. He also lettered in basketball, earning all-state honors three times and once scoring 59 points in a game.

Jones decided to enroll at Southeast Missouri State in 2003, turning down scholarship offers from Southern Mississippi, Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi and Mississippi State. As a true freshman, Jones was limited to five games. He posted seven tackles (four solos) and deflected two passes. He was limited to reserve duty in seven games in 2004, as he was hampered by an arm injury, finishing with 18 tackles (10 solos) and also returned one kickoff 10 yards.

Jones made a few changes before the 2005 season, turning in jersey No. 94 for No. 9. He also added more than 25 pounds of bulk to his frame. He took over strongside defensive end duties and served as team co-captain, as he produced 31 tackles (22 solos), four sacks, six stops for losses and two pressures. He also deflected two passes and returned a punt 49 yards.

As a senior, Jones was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, as he led the nation with 12 sacks. The team captain added All-America and All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, as he posted 53 tackles (37 solos) with 18 stops for losses in 10 games.

In 33 games at Southeast Missouri State, Jones started 21 times. He finished with 109 tackles (73 solos), 16 sacks for minus-109 yards and 18 stops for losses of 126 yards. He had four quarterback pressures with a forced fumble and six pass deflections. He gained 49 yards on a punt return and 10 yards on a kickoff return.

    ANALYSIS
Positives: Lacks ideal bulk for a down lineman, but shows good chest and arm muscle development, tight waist, loose hips and long limbs … Has the speed and body control to play in space, making him a potential outside linebacker candidate in a 3-4 alignment … Hard worker on the field and in the weight room … Also excels in the classroom, earning academic honors … Knows how to use his reach and punishing hand jolt to take blockers off stride coming off the snap … Disruptive pass rusher who gains leverage with his strong straight-ahead charge off the snap … Shows a combative nature fighting down the line … Stays in control, going low in his stance and extending his arms properly to grab, contain and wrap before the tackle … Has the change of direction and closing burst to collapse the pocket … Despite his lean frame, he shows power and aggression to shed blocks, using a nice swim move to avoid … Has a sharp drive coming off the edge as a pass rusher and is relentless in his attack … Uses his short-area speed to collapse the pocket and bring down the quarterback in the backfield … Strikes hard on impact, possessing the hip swerve to wrap and bring down the ball carrier in pursuit.

Negatives: Lack of bulk sees the offensive tackle ride him off the line when he fails to protect his chest … Classic 'tweener who does not possess the size, bulk or power anchor to be an effective every-down defensive lineman at the next level, but has enough redeeming qualities on stunts and edge rush to play in the sub package … Can defeat single blocks, but when he gets too wide with his hands he struggles to split double teams when redirecting inside … Frame might be at maximum growth potential and any more bulk could affect his quickness … Has to add leg strength in order to maintain position trying to step in to fill the rush lanes.

Compares To: Trent Cole, Philadelphia -- While Jones lacks the size to play the traditional defensive end position, he has an excellent burst off the snap and good hand usage to defeat single blocks and pressure the pocket … He will get neutralized against double-team action and stood up by the bigger blockers, but his swim move and arm-under skills usually see him slip past blocks to make plays on the quarterback … He could also be used as a linebacker in a 3-4 alignment due to his loose hips and depth he gets on his pass drops.

    INJURY REPORT
2004: Sat out the Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State games after suffering an arm contusion vs. Tennessee-Martin (Oct. 30).

2006: Sat out the season finale vs. Tennessee Tech (Nov. 18) with an undisclosed injury.

    AGILITY TESTS
    Campus: 4.75 in the 40-yard dash … 1.64 10-yard dash … 2.73 20-yard dash … 4.37 20-yard shuttle … 7.21 three-cone drill … 31?-inch vertical jump … 9-foot-8 broad jump … Bench pressed 225 pounds 21 times.

    HIGH SCHOOL
Attended Rayville (La.) High School … In football, he was a two-time all-state selection as a defensive end and tight end … In all four of his seasons with the varsity, he garnered all-district honors … Also lettered in basketball, earning all-state honors three times and once scoring 59 points in a game.

    PERSONAL
Criminal Justice major, earning school scholar-athlete honors … Hopes to eventually become a U.S. Marshall once his playing days are over … Son of Willie Anderson and Edgar Jones … Born Dec. 1, 1984 … Resides in Rayville, La.

    Matt Trannon
    Height: 6-6
    Weight: 237 Position: Wide Receiver/H-Back
    College: Michigan State

    OVERVIEW
Originally recruited by the Michigan State basketball team, Trannon just completed his fourth season as the football team's starting split end. The versatile athlete has an excellent wingspan and size for a receiver. His quickness off the line of scrimmage and ability to defeat the press coverage was one of the key reasons Michigan State boasted one of the most explosive aerial attacks in Division I-A during his career.

Trannon was a three-sport standout at Northern High School, the same school that produced Michigan State basketball stars Mateen Cleaves and Antonio Smith and Spartan football All-American Robaire Smith. He was named to the Super Prep, Prep Star and Prep Football Report All-Midwest teams, in addition to being ranked the nation's No. 34 wide receiver by Rivals100.com. The Detroit News rated him the No. 5 senior football player in the state, while he also ranked No. 10 by the Detroit Free Press and No. 11 by the Lansing State Journal.

Trannon was a member of the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press Dream Teams. He caught 32 passes for 558 yards (17.4 avg.) and nine touchdowns as a senior to earn first-team All-Saginaw Valley Conference honors. The three-year starter at wide receiver and two-year starter at safety had 78 career receptions for 1,385 yards (17.8 avg.) and 23 touchdowns.

Trannon was ranked among the nation's top 20 prep basketball players and rated the No. 6 power forward by ESPN.com. The four-year starter averaged 18.7 points and 10.2 rebounds as a senior, earning third-team Class A all-state honors by the Detroit News in 2000-01 after averaging 13.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. He added all-state honors in track after finishing third in the 200-meters as a junior.

Trannon was academically ineligible to play football or basketball upon his arrival at Michigan State in 2002. He played in the first 11 games of the 2003 season for the football team, starting six times at split end. Trannon finished the season with 28 catches for 259 yards (9.2 avg.).

In 2004, Trannon started 11 games at split end, missing the Penn State game after injuring his right thigh during warm-ups. He still managed to finish second on the team with 36 receptions for 405 yards (11.2 avg.) and two touchdowns. As a junior in 2005, he started six games, again ranking second on the team with a career-high 40 catches for 573 yards (14.3 avg.) and four scores. He also completed one pass for six yards.

The 2006 season was a trying one for the Spartans, as they saw their bowl aspirations dashed midway through the season. Those hopes coincided with Trannon's injuries, as he missed most of the Illinois game with a sore hamstring and the Northwestern and Ohio State contests with an ankle sprain. Even though he missed 25 percent of the season, he ranked second on the team with 44 catches for 518 yards (12.0 avg.) and three touchdowns. Trannon also displayed a powerful throwing arm, as two of his three pass attempts were completed to produce scores totaling 61 yards.

In 43 games with the Michigan State football team, Trannon started 35 times. He caught 148 passes for 1,755 yards (11.9 avg.) and nine touchdowns, adding 12 yards on a reverse. He recorded four solo tackles and completed three of four pass attempts for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

    ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a tall, wide frame with solid muscle development, long limbs, good strength and thick thigh and calf definition and long limbs ? Has good vertical speed for split end, but better quickness for H-Back or tight end ? Shows good initial quickness off the snap and it is very rare to see him throttle down when not involved in the play ? Demonstrates good toughness competing for the ball at its high point ? Has the size and hand strength to defeat press coverage, as it is very hard to re-route him due to his big frame ? Is developing a good feel for settling into the zone's soft spots ? Shows the agility to separate coming out of his breaks, as he flashes a sharp initial burst off the snap and has the long arms and strength to get by the hold-up and into his routes ? Knows how to use his body to his advantage when boxing out defenders and does a good job of securing the ball before heading up field after the catch ? The thing you see on 2006 film is that he has greatly improved his ability to use his long arms to make the play, as he now does a much better job extending for the high and low throws as a senior than he did in the past ? Made good strides as a senior sinking his hips and settling in the soft spot of the zone ? Sneaks up on cornerbacks and has the leg drive to power through arm tackles ? Uses his body to his advantage to box out the defenders on short routes ? Showed the ability to catch with his hands extended from his body and continued to improve with increased reps ? When working through traffic, he is not shy and will mix it up with a defender when competing for the jump ball ? Developed a good feel for tracking the ball in flight and showed improvement making the over-the-shoulder grabs ? Does not have the blazing speed to run past defensive backs, but keeps his pad level low and drives through arm tackles with good power ? Uses his body well to shield the ball from the defender and secure the ball after the catch ? His basketball experience is evident, as he consistently gets to the ball at its high point ? Does an adequate job of using his long arms to reach over and around the defender to make the catch ? Will work to take the ball from a defender when attempting to catch the ball in a crowd ? Has a good kick in his step and makes proper body adjustments to catch the off-target throws ? Has the athletic agility to make the over-the-shoulder grabs and the flexibility to get low to scoop up the shoe-string passes ? Hard for defenders to bring him down in isolated coverage and shows some hip wiggle to elude ? Won't overpower a defender as a blocker, but will get after linemen and has enough hand strength to jolt and sustain.

Negatives: Adequate route runner who needs work defining his cuts ? Drifts and rounds his cuts and drops his hands a bit when breaking, but shows a smooth stride to get under the ball ? Needs more work on defining his cuts, but has that long stride that lets him pull away from the bigger defenders after the catch ? Still learning how to read defenses and will lose his concentration some, resulting in a few dropped passes ? Not always quick to recognize coverages and hot reads, but shows the body control needed to come back for the poorly thrown ball ? Will still revert to body catching, but he continues to gain confidence in his large, soft hands ? Still a work in progress locating linebackers to neutralize when blocking down field, but it is not due to a lack of effort ? Is improving as a blocker, but needs to play with more aggression and do a better job of locating and neutralizing linebackers as a cut blocker ? His tall frame prevents him from sinking his hips at times (does have good wiggle), causing him to glide out of his breaks.

Compares To: Plaxico Burress, New York Giants -- Trannon is a mismatch for smaller cornerbacks and has that excellent leaping ability and size to get to most of the high passes ? He is still working on refining his routes, but shows good strength to break tackles and knows how to use his size to shield defenders from the ball.

    INJURY REPORT
2003: Missed several practices after suffering a shoulder contusion in a Tuesday scrimmage before the Notre Dame game (Sept. 18) ? Sat out the final two games vs. Penn State and Nebraska after suffering a quadriceps pull vs. Ohio State (Nov. 6).

2004: Did not play vs. Penn State (Nov. 20) after suffering a right thigh/hamstring pull during warm-ups before the contest.

2005: Sat out the Tennessee Tech (Dec. 28) and Coppin State (Dec. 31) basketball games with an ankle sprain.

2006: Missed four games with the basketball team after suffering a broken jaw in the Michigan (Feb. 18) game ? Limited in August camp (Aug. 22) with lower body strains ? Saw limited action vs. Illinois (Sept. 30) with a sore hamstring ? Did not play vs. Ohio State (Oct. 14) and Northwestern (Oct. 21) with a right high ankle sprain. He suffered the injury in the fourth quarter vs. Michigan and had to be carted off the field with what was then thought to be an Achilles' tendon strain.

    AGILITY TESTS
    Campus: 4.62 in the 40-yard dash ? 335-pound bench press ? 435-pound squat ? 34-inch vertical jump ? 4.34 20-yard shuttle ? 33?-inch arm length ? 9?-inch hands ? Right-handed.

    Combine: 4.57 in the 40-yard dash ? Bench pressed 225 pounds 13 times ? 36?-inch vertical jump ? 9-foot-10 broad jump ? 4.34 20-yard shuttle ? 7.09 three-cone drill.

This reminds me of the time in high school when a classmate was convinced that SF DB Eric Davis was the same guy as CIN OF Eric Davis.
