If we do cut Barton I predict that Bellicheck signs him the next day and we remember how good he was in a Jet uniform while he makes our offense look anemic. Good thing Barton isn't going anywhere.
I think it's a stretch to say that Barlow was the guy Mangini wanted. C-Mart's injuries were revealed to be career-ending only when it was too late to get anyone good in free agency. The first guy the Jets went after was Lee Suggs and we know how that worked out. They pretended he failed his physical because he sucked ass. After that, they settled on Barlow. But at no point did anyone think he was going to save the team. Tangini was just trying to avoid having an RB disaster like the QB disaster the year before. In the end, I support the move. I wish the Jets had the 4th rounder back but it was a smart insurance move. But now it's time to send Barlow packing, no matter how many nice things he says.
On defense I would like to see the release of Kimo von Oelhoffen but Tangini has already said that even though his play wasn't where they liked it to be he brought a lot to the clubhouse and my belief is that if he wants to come back next season (he's old lets remember) that he will be brought back as a back-up. So here's the list of possible cuts in my mind: CB David Barrett LB Brad Kassell LB Eric Barton (No this is not as crazy as many would say and although I don't think it will happen it could if the organization wants to move Hobson to the inside and go with a more pass rushing OLB in Hobson's current position)
If I'm not mistaken, Hobson is a starter and that still leaves you one LB short. And Hobson was last year's whipping boy. Another case of what have you done for me in the past 5 minutes. Barton was a star in 2004 and got hurt in 2005 and now everybody wants to get rid of him because the DL stunk and the LBs couldn't make impact plays. Last year Hobson was too slow and now he's Dick Butkus (don't get me wrong, I think Hobson belongs in the starting lineup and proved his worth this year). How about the Jets concentrate on some real high paid underachievers, like Ellis, who has been below average since taking that huge contract at the end of 2004. Since then he has about 6 sacks in two full seasons, begged out of the end of the 2005 season with a hangnail and did nothing as a 3-4 end in 2006 except make the LBs look bad. Is Robertson truly a nose tackle? The DL needs a complete overhaul. What has Barton done to get cut, exactly? I must have missed those 16 games.
What I'm talking about is moving Hobson inside, where his sure tackling and run-stuffing will be an upgrade, and where is lack of "speed" isn't such an issue. Your argument that Hobson was "slow" is even more of a reason to consider moving him to the INside, where he will thrive. Barton hits the road, given the fact that Hobson is a competent upgrade, Barton is getting up there in age, his cap # is high, and his play as of late has been "average." Now I know the argument will be that the whole DL stunk last year, so how could we blame that on Barton. The only way I keep Barton is if he restructures. Well, how would you explain the fact that the DL stunk but guys like Hobson and Thomas thrived? As for being one LB short, I'm all for looking to spend our first round pick on guys like Woodley, speed-rushing OLB's, who have already been mentioned. As for the DL, you're right, they completely stunk. The only one who showed ANYTHING in the 2nd half of the season was Robertson, and I wouldn't count him out yet, maybe not as our starting NT, but certainly consider moving him to DE. Ellis was an embarrasment last year and you can't make excuses for the guy. Kimo should just be brought round back and put out of his misery. The whole argument about keeping Kimo was that he "brought alot to the lockerroom," and was a "veteran presence." What exactly do those two things count for when you play like an absolute turd on the field? Give me firery follower instead of an over-the-hill, creaky, veteran who tells good jokes in the lockerroom anyday.
wow, you really like to throw "great" around, don't you? the great Barlow only merited a 4th round pick, and he was placed on the inactive list. i mean, how great can he really be? cheers
they both look like shit right now i think i just said that didnt i? and thats why i said mangini will probably chose barlow over houston because of what barlow brings to the table
Someone explain how Hobson thrived at anything other than getting a few sacks in December against weak offensive teams. Barton and Thomas were our best linebackers last year in that order. Vilma got manhandled but has enough talent to take a chance on keeping but why the love for Hobson? Just because he sucked at OLB doesn't mean he would be an upgrade over anyone at ILB. Also those bitching about the $3 mil that Barton is making forget that this will be Hobson's contract year and he will want at least $5 mil, especially if we cut Barton and have no depth at LB. What leverage would we have in negotiating with Hobson then?
houston is on a rookie contract...barlow is not i think he actually has a high cap number...and it wouldnt cost a thing to cut or trade him b/c he was acquired in a trade(if thats how it works) thats an edge
I'm not sure who in the NFL is going to pay Hobson $5 mil a year, maybe Matt Millen...that's about it. Hobson makes more plays than Barton is the bottom line.
Can some of you please explain these cuts. Poteat is making the league minimum and dominated at the end of the year. Moore and Bobby Hamilton are in the same boats as they are adequate backups, who could teach our younger players a thing or two. Not to mention it was said that Bobby Hamilton was very vocal and loved being on the Jets. Adrian Jones is still on his rookie contract.
